We have picked a winner! Congrats to Sean T. - I have notified them that they won via email and will wait to hear back until Monday the 5th. If I don't hear back from Sean by then, I'll be picking a new winner. Thanks to everyone who entered, and to the folks who tried to game the system by automating an entry every 5 minutes - I removed duplicates, so your efforts were in vain, and I hope you step on a LEGO.

Congrats Sean! For those wondering the quality: I recently setup my Unifi UCI with a Dream Machine Special Edition and a U6 Pro, using Cat6a runs across everything with Spectrum 1GB Internet. I can confirm that I receive modem speeds of a consistent 1100 (1119 typical) mbps download and 40 mbps upload. By comparison, the "Surfboard" i was provided originally only received a maximum of 700mbps, which dropped lower with wireless degradation, even on Ubiquiti equipment. That being said: If there's anyone, and I mean anyone, considering this, please do this option over any cable providers Modem, regardless free or not. You're going to be providing yourself significantly more headroom to work with, and I can say for certainty: Spectrum absolutely hates that I am using my own modem now lol.

It’s actually a lot more complicated than you think. Most residential/smb fiber providers use GPON or XGSPON. The GPON SFP ONT sticks are pretty cheap, but the XGSPON SFP+ ONT’s are prohibitively expensive. There’s more than the additional costs that the ISP deals with using the SFP ONT’s. often times the authentication is actually done on the ISP provided device, not the client. Lots of US ISP’s use 802.1x authentication in combination with the devices serial number. Obviously the isp doesn’t want to release that certificate. Supporting the SFP ONT’s is also expensive for the ISP’s. Providing software updates, support and a distribution chain for a product that is used by 1 of 20,000 customers is expensive. That’s why the ISP’s will tell you to order a dedicated internet circuit if you want a standard duplex lc/upc Ethernet handoff. Even then the ISP will likely put a carrier grade router in your premises.

I've been using this with Cox for several months, and while I very much like what it's done for my equipment rack, I don't know that my internet experience has really improved. If anything, there were a few features I was expecting out of a higher-tier product like this that I didn't get, namely the ability to configure an auto-reboot if the device detects a loss of internet for a specified length of time. I also ran into an issue where I noticed a loss of internet while I was offsite, reached out to Cox, but they were unable to trigger a remote modem reset (something they should be able to to do with any supported modem). Once I got home and reset the modem all returned to normal, but that still implies either the modem itself locked up, or the back-door comms Cox has to this device is not working 100%.
@cburtis9771
@cburtis9771 6 ай бұрын
+1, I returned mine as I had an issue with the UCI locking up also, which required a power cycle using it with Cox Communications. Ubiquiti support asked me to install the latest alpha software. After doing that, the UCI went into a reboot cycle a few days later. Again, a power cycle got it back online. I re-installed my Arris S33, which I had never thought about after installing. No speed difference between the UCI and Arris. I'm guessing all software issues. It's too bad, as I was really excited about this product.

@@bornclutch131 I think it's a little excessive to double the price and waste 2U just to get an automated reboot of a device if the internet goes down. It just *feels* like something Ubiquiti would add as a checkbox/option to the device management.

For Comcast residential service you can get over 200 up if you are in an area that has been upgraded to mid-split or high-split and has OFDMA carries on the upstream. Low-Split, Mid-Split and High-Split are industry terms used to differentiate where the upstream/downstream frequency bands start and end in a cable system. You also need to have a DOCSIS 3.1 modem that is on the approved list for the faster upload speeds and the UCI is on that list.

However, one quirk I have noticed it that according to the UDM-SE network dashboard, the UCI will sometimes show as "offline" even though everything is working fine. It's happened several times, and a reboot fixes it (for a while at least). Since the last reboot (21d). I should also add that my ISP is providing ~1Gbps service (down), with ~11Mbps up.

For a little extra context.... The reason most business ISP's won't let you use your own modem with static IP's is that they use RIP keys to authenticate modems, and that has to be hardcoded into the modem, usually via ssh. Meaning they need root access to the modem, and standardized processes to do it. It also means the modem has to support RIP V2. TLDR, too many variables.

One big downside can't even simply look at the signal levels on the modem side like every other modem out there. One reason I havent gotten one yet. Also it DOES work with more ISP's than listed. My small ISP will allow it. But does not support there midsplit.

I think that you could get the static ip addresses working through you'd need to configure a static ip and the dynamic ip that comcast business gives you. Though this would require you to do a custom bootscript to the UDM. That in itself would already be a huge work around since you'd need to configure your dynamic ip as a static including finding the gateway/subnet ip ect. While also having it renew the lease after a certain amount of time on the network so it will keep your internet from dropping.
@TRLTheRandomLab
@TRLTheRandomLab 5 ай бұрын
Sadly no, Comcast has a really weird way they provision and route static IPs.... the modem is set up as a RIP client and Comcast will absolutely not provide setup instructions to customers for that, particularly because of the authentication keys (i wouldn't be surprised if it's common across thousands of customers and hence why they keep it a secret). Not all cable modems have RIP capabilities (or any routing protocol really), and Comcast special-orders gateways from SMC with RIP capabilities

UCI was not certified for next gen 100 and 200 Mbps upload speeds at launch, but now it is. DOCSIS 4 will require new hardware, though. It's also cheaper for residential customers to get the xFi Conplete add-on for unlimited data at only $15.00 (base rental)+10.00 (xfi complete)= $25.00 a month, vs. having unlimited data on a customer owned modem, which costs an extra $30.00 a month. Those in the northeast division have no cap, but central and west division do. And to be fair, xfinity offers a true bridge mode so you can use your own router with no issues, not every ISP has a bridge mode. @CrosstalkSolutions

What sort of management or statistics for the UCI are you able to view within Unifi? One of my biggest complaints about my setup with a USG, Cloud Key Gen2+ & 3rd party cable modem is not being able to track my monthly data usage. I have very little trust in what Comcast is telling me I'm using via their data usage tool. Of course it wouldn't matter if they just did us all a favor and eliminated their monthly data caps!

Looks like the contest form allows you to enter multiple times (As soon as I clicked submit it gave me an option to Submit ANOTHER form). Are duplicates being removed, or should we all enter as many times as we can between now and the end of the month? (I figured it would only allow one submission but don't want to enter multiple times IF it's going to disqualify me. Thanks!

*Cool note* My Comcast speed is faster than before even though I had a DOCSIS 3.1 device previously. I've tested it several different speedtests and even a manual download from Google. I was not expecting it to be faster, just easier to manage/diagnose issues. I got the UCI a month ago when my old Arris died from spilled coffee. RIP

According to Xfinity’s documentation, the Ubiquiti UCI now supports 2.33 gbps down and 474 mbps up on Xfinity’s “next gen speed tier” I was hesitant to pick one of these up before since there’s no SFP+ but being one of only eight devices approved and with Xfinity rolling out higher upload speeds to compatible devices, I might as well jump over

The speeds they are talking about aren't determined by the hardware but by the ISP. Usually when they put the info for something that would be 3rd party to them they can only go by what was given to them at the time. UI needs to go in and update it or at least mention what it is theoretically capable of regardless of ISP

Just submitted a form for the giveaway! Keeping things honest, I couldn't answer the last question by saying that your channel is the only thing I watch on KZbin. But you've taught me more than any other source about PTMP wireless, I consider you a must-watch channel for all but the most hardcore networking professionals as well as for those who just want to learn more about networking, and I refer your videos to others frequently. In fact, I'm forwarding this one to my low-voltage subcontractor, because his cable modem just quit, and on my recommendation, he's renting a cable modem from his ISP for a few months just to prove out the connection. After that he'll be wanting to buy another cable modem, and the UCI is actually in the same price range as the better conventional DOCSIS 3.1 cable modems.

Sort of makes sense. But I think using 3rd party devices into WAN ports is still preferable. I'm currently migrating away from a USG-pro to pfsense for easier policy routing. Keeping the switches and access points though. Not quite ready to Overhaul the switching.

Docsis deals with access by MAC address. Other ISP's should work. If the ISP network is standard Docsis then it's standard Docsis. If the ISP has fucked with it and made their own "improvements" then it's anyone's guess if the UCI modem would work. It's unfortunate that even to this day we can't have nice things. Even the US/Euro split doesn't exist anymore after Docsis 3.1 and which is backwards compatible with previous versions, yet for example imported TC4400 modems refuse to connect to anything over here. You need the many times more expensive -EU model which is rather rare whose firmware changes of course can't be updated to the -US model. Well that's just great. Cisco modems EOL'd because of stupid certificate business and if you want a simple modem with Broadcom chipset and nothing else tacked on you're basically left with rare and expensive TC4400-EU. Unfortunately Ubiquiti made a dumdum with the UCI and based it around the problematic Puma7 chipset. Even if Ubiquiti decides to bring it over here, I won't be interested.
