Tormented is the perfect description. Knowing what Nathan’s upbringing was like means we can understand, if not condone, his horrible behavior. We can only hope for a Jamie Tart type of turnaround. Lousy childhood isn’t a life sentence unless we allow it to be.

This has been an interesting choice. It is common to play a a meek awkward character for laughs, i think that is the expectation. Instead having Nate be a victim of abuse, its true to life to have Nate pass on that abuse. Also you have to admire the thorough foreshadowing.

I think one of the significant moments in why Nate changes and becomes increasingly angry and resentful was when Ted decided to ask Roy to be on the coaching staff. I think Nate feels displaced and then his spiral starts towards where he ends up in episode 12 in season 2.

I definitely don’t condone Nate’s behavior, but it was pretty clear that Nate wasn’t consulted about Roy joining the coaching staff, which was definitely not okay on Ted’s part. Ted also could’ve given Nate a chance to talk to Isaac. That might not have worked out too well, but Nate was the assistant coach, and Ted instead chose to outsource the job to someone who wasn’t even on the coaching staff yet. All of these were valid reasons to be upset, but Nate should’ve talked to Ted or Beard and expressed his concerns instead of lashing out in the ways that he did.

@@jkta97 True, also remember the phrasing, Isaac needs to talk to a real man (or something like that), Nate offers himself and Ted doesn't take it seriously. Also bringing in Roy was a huge attack on Nate's ego because up until that point he held a tactical high ground over everyone in the coaching staff but Roy changes that dynamic, and initially gets a lot of the credit for Richmond's play "The Roy Kent effect".

The writers have left themselves with the terrific potential to contrast Richmond’s teamwork and support and this new West Ham’s bullying drive to stamp out any mistakes. The questions of what makes a great team and what good coaching can create are fascinating. I’m still playing and there’s a constant conflict between creativity and “keeping it simple” (which is the shout you get when mistakes come from creativity inevitably; usually from those who don’t have the technique to be skilful). The show is in position A to explore these sporting dynamics … oh yeah.. apart from being brilliantly funny. All the while Roy Kent sits at the confluence between Ted’s nurturing soul and Nate’s struggle for control through abuse like a big fat hippo of pure energy. 😜🤪

What a great job playing such an unusual character. From his nervous approach to a bit of confidence to his overblown ego has been very interesting. His actions in the end here at halftime and after seem to suggest he wanted a reason to take the other job and when he didn't get it he started manufacturing his reasoning. Props to this guy for doing what needs to be done in portraying his character's pathos and misdirected aggression. I hope that people can separate the character from the actor and not take out their frustration with Nate on Nick. Some of the things Nate dawg said to Ted in that scene sounded exactly like things he wanted to say to his dad. The writers showed his issues with his dad very clearly without having to bash the audience over the head with it. It was all well foreshadowed without being too obvious, the necessary set up was executed well enough for that scene to have a big impact. I’m expecting Nate dawg to start season three off like a house on fire taking the league by storm and defeating Richmond in the first half of the season while Richmond endure a tough start to the season. In the second half of the season I’m anticipating Richmond will start to mount a comeback to save their season and preserve their top flight status while things start to fall apart for our boy Nate at west ham with his toxic behavior catching up with him as he loses the dressing room and performances on the pitch and results start to suffer. I could see the season finale being the return league fixture between the two clubs. They could emphasize the stakes by having that match be the final round of the league and with Richmond needing to win to confirm their premier league survival while west ham might need just a draw to qualify for Europe. A situation where Richmond defy the odds and beat their more fancied opposition. Thus showing Nate that despite his best efforts he was not able to destroy the belief that Ted instilled into Richmond. And it would be an opportunity to show Rupert’s true colors to Nate by sacking him with immediate effect and not even the slightest hint of remorse and compassion.

I think Rupert is going to ask Nate to do something heinous and crossing a line and Nate will put on his big boy pants and shift and will either throw the finale game to Richmond for Ted or quit and try to help Richmond since he knows all of Rupert’s teams plays and weaknesses. And he will do it without being hired by Richmond…as a final act of forgiveness to Ted who of course takes him back in the fold.

I thought it was so interesting for Nick to mention the writers potentially making a character who is beyond redemption, someone who is just purely bad. Nate may end up there, but Rupert will never and should never leave the pit of hell he resides in. In my eyes he’s the only true villain in the show (aside from Jamie’s dad, but Rupert actually has the power to impact others)

Jamie’s dad is a piece of shit and is proud of it and is seemingly too old to ever want to change his ways. Nate I could see changing once he realizes the error of his ways. At the end of season 2 he has a very inflated view of himself and he thinks he’s where he belongs at the top of the food chain. He can’t quite see that he’s being used and that he’ll be discarded the moment he’s deemed no longer useful. Although I can’t quite see him being welcomed back at Richmond if he goes hard on burning bridges while he’s flying high at west ham. Even if Ted can forgive him I don’t think the players would want him back. For Nate’s redemption to be believable he’ll have to confront the issues he has with his father. Not to mention that going from being a head coach back to being part of the coaching staff of a “lesser” club would be extremely humbling and it’s not something that is seen in real life and it might break the immersion if they had Nate rejoin Richmond too soon if at all.

Nick is such a good actor. I straight hated Nate by the end of the second season, he had reached a fever pitch and had to go, but Nick is such a good balance between Nate in Seasons 1 and 2. He’s not meek or withering, but he’s not a cocky, arrogant ass either, he’s just a good guy. Being able to play those other emotions and personalities so well is Emmy worthy. Not sure he’ll beat Toheeb, but really incredible. But I’m so excited to see what happens in Season 3- according to Ted’s rom-communism theory, we’re in the dark woods, things have gotten bad, but that means we’re going to find our way out and get to a happy conclusion in the future. I hope Nate can redeem himself, it’ll feel a little incomplete if he just goes to the dark side for good.

I think the way Nate gains Richmond's trust back is with a parallelism in which he apologizes the same way he roasted them in S1. Starting with the group as a whole then the kit man, Roy, Colin, and finally Ted.

I honestly somewhat understand the bully arc of Nate. Think about it, his dad already treats him like garbage and all Nate’s trying to do is prove himself. So when the man that is like the father that he never had “turns on him” he feels true betrayal. And think about it, Jamie was a bully because his dad treated him like shit but his teammates and Ted helped him out of that state. But Nate, he didn’t have anyone to pull him out and say it was wrong. But another thing that adds to it is that being around Richmond and seeing Will. Though he now has power he is still constantly being reminded of his weaker self. I would say overall he’s become the tiger that he said he wanted to be when he died. Granted though, the tiger is a prick right now.

Ted was instrumental in redeeming Jamie's character. Jamie's lack of maturity was definitely his flaw, but Ted was the engine that turned Jamie's character arc around. so Ted definitely deserves the credit for that. Ted was also instrumental in Nate's evolution. yes, he elevated and encouraged Nate to be a leader. BUT Ted also failed to provide Nate the tools to be a good leader. and this makes Ted an even greater character himself. as it shows that NOT ALL his attempts at making other people better are successes.

Both Nick, the writing team and especially Sudeikus's vision are very clever with what they've done with Nates's character arc. Season 1 setup up the general Coach Lasso 'ethos' - vulnerability, kindness, empathy, empowerment and things that undermine that. But its easy to have affinity with people we are sympathetic with, no matter how flawed they are - we identify with them. We don't so easily identify with the 'villain' or the unsympathetic person, that's what season 2-3 is testing US the audience with. Can we have empathy with those we hold opposing views with? Can we find common ground? Can WE forgive someone who has erred? It speaks to much of the toxic discourse that floods our media, social circles and political climate... Ted Lasso is very clever social satire and critique.. Bravo

S2 has been described as Empire Strikes Back, but I think it’s more Attack of the Clones. Nate (Anakin) is seduced by Rupert (Palpatine) to turn against Ted/Beard (Obi-Wan). Nate’s even wearing black. This arc leaves the redemption story completely up in the air. Looking forward to S3.

One thing that I’m disappointed that isn’t touched upon is Nate’s clear self-hatred of himself. He’s seeking validation he wants to be valued and eventually he just starts engaging in self-destructive behavior. Like you see Nate in the final episode basically admitting to something with the intent of trying to get Roy to hit him. He’s searching for an excuse to destroy his relationships because he doesn’t believe in himself and thinks those who have previously validated him are gas lighting him.

I hope we don't get the predictable redemption arc. Nate is an a#$hole, let him be an a#$hole. He will shout and be a dick to the players at Rupert's new club, Rupert will can him when they start losing, blaming it all on Nate and Nate will get angrier and blame everyone else but himself. Some people are just shitty, let him be shitty and pay the price for it. The redemption arc is just too predictable and something that keeps getting repeated in this show.

Nick Mohammed is one of those British comedy actors that has worked hard and you’ll have seen him for many years usually in the background and smaller parts of British tv shows and films. He did do a intelligence with David Schwimmer but it would seem Ted Lasso has really put Nick on the map. He does play a certain role but he does it well and Tes Lasso is a stand out show that he is one of the stand out performers. Series 3 will be interesting and looking forward to Nates storyline, I hope it goes darker.

His fall and heal turn was so simple yet sweet because it can be summed up in a single word, pride. The dude feel to pride mixed in with some basic jealousy and envy because he never had any power before now. Plus thou the show doesn’t show it do to the time jumps it actually took him almost a year and a half to fall to it. It took a season and a half (in this case literally do to sporting season’s) to make him do the unfergivable.

A lot of people have described Nate's journey throughout season 2 as becoming a villain. Even the actor discusses the confrontation at the end as being completely out of control. I see it differently. As a viewer, I followed Nate into that back room along with Ted expecting a certain thing to happen. Ted is going to reveal he knows Nate to be the anonymous source and ask him to explain, or at any rate it is going to come out. That is not what happened. I was as taken aback by Nate's outburst as Ted appeared to be. It was not what either of us were expecting. In typical fashion, Ted approaches the situation with curiosity instead of judgement and asks Nate what he (Ted) had done wrong. I don't know what Ted was expecting, but I was expecting something along the lines of "you're so goddamn good and nice and I just can't stand it." To instead hear that Nate feels abandoned and side-lined is a shock. It's a total misunderstanding, but there's a lot in his accusations that make sense. And he's right. Ted shouldn't be there. He doesn't really know what he's doing, and why isn't he back in America with his son? This also stems from Nate's insecurities about his relationship with his own father. It is an absolute master stroke that forces the viewer to go back and look at all the clues that were missed.
