X-Men! Man, cool to see the game I coded all those years ago in a new video. Thanks for not saying it sucked! :D Programming that was probably the highlight of my career. It was great to work with Ed Annunziata, he's a really cool dude. Made me and Sega a nice sum of money, sold really well. I miss the old days. Cheers, dude!

@@suprastevio2264 Sega of America was a cool bunch of people. I really enjoyed working with them. I was an independent developer, back when one person could make most, if not all, of a game. I worked from home, and went out to San Francisco maybe once or twice a year to meet up about projects. I did SMS and GG work for them, and stopped when those systems were phased out.

As far as Japan vs. US...in Japan, everything was taken seriously even if there were cynical business interests involved. In the US, only cynical interests were ever present unless there was a 'true believer' tasked with delivering the product. In the US, name recognition, trends and other non-gameplay affecting issues were considered. "Can we advertise this and will our marketing translate into sales?" was basically how American companies tended to approach everything. In Japan, they did this as well (with major concerns over whether America/Europe/Austrial would buy it as well...how else do you think Spiderman made it into Revenge of Shinobi?), but they began with a foundation of true believers and worked TOWARD the cynical goal rather than the US which began at the cynical goal and worked backwards, spending as little money as possible to meet it. Thus, you get mostly shovelware. It's a sad reality of how the game business works in the US. EA? Yeah...they're still doing it.

I loved Axe Battler back in the day! It mainly appealed to me after seeing screenshots of it in magazines and such, as I was absolutely obsessed with anything that looked like a Dragon Warrior game back then, with the overhead RPG looking world map. Anything that had that look back then instantly had my attention as I have always been a HUGE Dragon Warrior/Quest fan.

I know the feel, my DS Lite is broken from me trying to repair it lol. I was replacing the hinge but I've cut the ribbon cable trying to feed it through, replaced that part, now I've cut the tiny little ribbon cable that goes from front to back side of the board, I think bending it a little too much ripped the corner and that part I don't can I can replace so easily.

Game Gear was an awesome system. The Shinobi games alone made it worth owning. Yes more Game Gear please! Haha that Taz-Mania clip brought back memories. I bought that one with my system. If you do a part 2 I suggest Surf Ninjas. It's by no means a good game but to mimic the kid in the movie who saw the future on his Game Gear you can find one in each stage that shows what's coming up in the level lol. Stargate is another exclusive that is awesome to play if you like puzzle games. Unlike the platform versions other systems got the GG one has you matching gate addresses in a drop puzzle format against Ra.

Shinobi II on Game Gear is so great, the music, the graphics, the gameplay, the game being progressively hard, the items to collect, the several ninjas, their abilities and special power. It amazed me when I was a kid, especially as I had very few games on them, but both Game Boy & Game Gear. I only had Columns and Shinobi II on Game Gear and they were so beautiful. I think Sega, with Game Gear, and later Dreamcast, was ahead of its time. The real problem of the Game Gear being his awful battery, 6 for one hour...

Sylvan Tale: A Japanese-only action RPG Ninku and Ninku 2: Two pretty cool little fighting games based on the manga of the same name. Defenders of Oasis: Another great GameGear RPG! Of course, the Shining Force Gaiden games exclusive for GameGear are great but Japanese-only except for the second one! There's also Eternal Legend, Lunar, and Moldorian which are 3 RPGs but were only released in Japan. I think Moldorian has a fan translation available.

Shinobi II on GG is among my favorite SEGA releases ever. Everything about it was a fun filled, blissful handheld challenge for me. Plus, I had no expectations for it when I got it for a just few $ back in 2005 from a game store’s closing sale. They had two dusty GGs in a cardboard box with a grip of random games that my friend and I split. Somehow I got Shinobi while he got Jurassic Park, which I’m still not sure how I pulled off. Anyway, the GG holds up.

I think the divide in east-west development quality in this period wasn't just a Sega thing. After the video game crash Western development went off a cliff. The Amiga saw some amazing looking & sounding games, but neither they nor PC developers had figured out the physics of character control the way Nintendo had with Mario, or Capcom with Mega Man. Those had a huge influence on what came after in Japan. Really solid Western games were far fewer - Rare, some of EA, Midway's best stuff. The West found its way in the mid-late 90s with the FPS, RTS & MMO genres, but even then didn't really rise to parity until Microsoft entered the console market with platform that necessitated that- as well as a new generation of programmers who'd grown up with consoles.

That America/Japan difference might explain why I had such a consistently good time with my Genesis growing up. Most of my games were from it's early days, and I had very few red box games. By '94 I was probably starting to get into the 3DO and leaving the Genesis behind. The exclusive game I played a lot on my Game Gear when I was growing up was Sonic Chaos. Yes, it was one of the few games I had (also having Sonic 1, Joe Montana Football, some plane game, and Mortal Kombat II), but still, it was a fun time. Maybe because I could play as Tails. He's been my favorite Sonic character for so long, not just because he's yellow (my favorite color), but also because he can fly. Sure, in Chaos he definitely didn't hit as hard as Sonic and so the final boss was a bit harder with him, but the flight was just too nifty to pass up. Also, it helped that unlike Sonic, he didn't have any 'tude. Helps his characterization to not become too dated.

Great video! I loved the Game Gear, it was an awesome system and I have some great memories playing with friends. That "music" on Chicago Syndicate though has to be some of the worst I've heard. You weren't kidding, it should be classified as cruel and unusual punishment!

Just found out that it's possible to patch Game Gear games to run on a SMS. That way it will fill more of your screen so you will get a bigger playing field. Should work both on a SMS emulator or flashcards. And even a Genesis/Mega Drive if you have the right flashcard.
