I'm probably in the minority, but the SEGA 8-Bit systems had my favorite sound chips of all time. I LOVE the 'pings', 'hums' and 'whistles' it creates. It's funny really, the switch has the same amount of battery life as the game gear but nobody seems to talk about that much. I love my switch, and I'd argue its portable in the same way the game gear was, in that as long as where you're travelling to has a wall socket then you can play it as much as you want. There's nothing wrong with that. You can't really carry a big console with you on holiday, and also you'd need a TV to be there. The game gear was a portable master system and the switch is a portable Wii U and they're both great. But the jokes about the game gear battery life never end even decades later.

@duffman183 жыл бұрын
@@soulripper31 no you didn't. Everyone with a game gear had the wall adapter, and/or rechargeable batteries, so in that sense it's not different from a smartphone or a switch (and also, everyone with a gameboy had these things too, because they ate through batteries really fast too, not as much as the game gear, but almost; going back and trying to use a gameboy these days, it's really quite shocking how short a time they last, I don't remember it being this bad when I was a kid, but then my parents were paying for the batteries back then, not me). Anyway smartphones, switch, game gear, game boy, they're all portable systems. Because it's a different thing to, let's say, trying to carry a gaming PC with you on the train with you to see your parents. I can carry my switch with me everywhere and use it anywhere, just like with a game gear or smartphone. It's great

Great topic, list, and video. First, I will say that I think Road Rash looks quite impressive for the 8-bit hardware. And Rister looks extremely impressive, and it plays great. The Game Gear extended the lifespan of the Master System allowing us to see what the hardware could do when pushed further. And we see the results of that in Ristar and Gunstar Heroes. I finally got around to trying the Shinobi games a few years ago. I consider them both to be the top two games on the platform. I think I preferred part two when I played, but they were definitely close in quality and I can easily see it going either way. I remember playing a good bit of various Sonic games, which I mostly liked. Dragon Crystal was weird but fun, though there's a huge difficulty spike toward the end and it has some other quirks that make it hard to recommend. I remember liking Ax Battler and Super Monaco GP as well. I even really liked the first Mortal Kombat game on it at the time. I recall also playing Fatal Fury on the system. It wasn't as easy to tell which games on the system were the best, so I was very experimental with it and my library reflected that.

Oddly the only person I knew to have a Game Gear in the early-mid 90s was my grandfather's 2nd wife's son in law, so I didn't get to play it very much then, he was also extremely protective of it, had the big magnifying glass thing and always had it on the little metal kickstand on his coffee table haha. But one of the games he had for it was GG Aleste 2, and I remember being SO blown away by that game, and even Sonic 2, but especially the prior. As a young Gameboy owner that shit just felt like it was in a completely different league, no comparison, and made me feel like the GB must have been a rip off or scam or something lol. Never ended up with one before I got a Nomad in 97 until I inherited one from a friend in 2000 or so. It's battery life was definitely unacceptable, but the thing absolutely felt incredibly ahead of it's time.

"Sega and Disney went together like biscuits and gravy." No offense, but I would have preferred you comparing them to something like peanut butter and chocolate, since I don't like to eat biscuits and gravy at all. :P

Actually, I purposely chose biscuits n gravy because of my southern roots. I knew it was gonna be a point of contention for those not from my neck of the woods. ;)

My very first game on game gear was shinobi GG. I just couldn't believe I was playing a shinobi game on a portable console. Back then it was pure magic.

Best way to enjoy these nowdays is on a OG Game Gear with a Mcwill mod screen this equals perfection.

Just saw this old upload of yours and I have to agree the games are fun... I am planning on making a GG collection and will include the games on your list. Might I suggest Defenders of the Oasis? Its the only JRPG i played on a borrowed Game gear. I promise you it is good! Thr Power Ranger game on GG was good too..Thanks man!

My "Sega confession": I've never been a big fan of any of the Genesis Road Rash games. My first Road Rash experience was on the 3DO, and none of the earlier (or heck, LATER) games compared. I don't think I could play the GG version...but this is a solid list. Can't believe you made a top 10 Game Gear games without a single Sonic game! I'd definitely have put Tails' Adventure on there, at least.

Sylvan Tale would be on my list. It's such a solid Zelda-like, I'm amazed it didn't continue on to become a big franchise. The fan translation for it is top notch.

You gotta check out the new game ROAD REDEMTION for I think all systems mopdern now. it is basicaly a more awesome road rash but without the road rash license. It's awesome and better than any previous road rash.

Where's Sonic 1 for the Game Gear, though? It's both a completely new spin on Sonic 1 and a good port at the same time, plus some people even speculate that it's a huge piece of history, since some of the parts seem to be based on the beta version of Sonic 1 (MD/GEN).

I liked the GG Sonic games quite a bit, as I said in the description. I enjoyed these more, however.

Fun fact, game gear works on everdrive and other flash carts on reaal genesis. Well, kind of. Any of them that use the game gear bigger color pallete will have fucked up colors, but will work. And the games that only use master syste m color pallette axtually work fine.

I had a lot of these games. Watching the gameplay and hearing the music/sounds put me right back in the car during family road trips in the 90s.

These games are all shit on a real game gear, and were all shit back in the day on original hardware. Luckily we now have emulation and can finaly enjoy these good games b y actually being able to see them. The game gear is a blurry piece of shit even when new, my brother had ones so I played it. Optionally a modded game gear with a modern screen would probbaly be excellent now too.

I was curious about the rest of the list once you mentioned The GG Shinobi II and didn't expect for a second that you'd put the original over it. While I understand that this is your personal top ten list for the Game Gear, I always viewed The GG Shinobi II as a much more refined take on the original. Just off the top of my head, the limited viewing area in The GG Shinobi makes it difficult to know where to jump on the section with the vehicles driving on the highway, and there are too many instances of cheap hits due to enemies appearing too quickly or moving too quickly. I agree that The GG Shinobi is a more difficult game, but I don't think it's more difficult for the right reasons. Anyway, I agree that it would've been nice to see that take on the Shinobi series make it to the Genesis (or even the Saturn or Dreamcast). I'm not really a huge fan of the Shinobi series as a whole, but I absolutely love The GG Shinobi II.

I really like Shinobi II. I think in some ways you're right, it is better in terms of stage design. GG Shinobi is my favorite of the two because of its soundtrack and its challenge, however. I am a big fan of old game music. I believe it contributed as much to the games environment as the visuals. You take away certain games music, and you strip its soul away in the process. GG Shinobi just had that feel where all was right in its world, a symphony of visual and audio goodness. It clicked with me in a way the second never did. The challenge was something I overcame with practice, but I didn't mind, it just meant I could listen to that music even more.

NBA JAM, Ren & Stimpy: Quest for The Shaven Yak, Desert Strike, and Mortal Kombat 1,2,3 games for the Game Gear were my favorite. I remember how surprised I was when I unlocked The Beastie Boys while playing NBA JAM😆
