I have been a fan of Jinjer for 6 years now. This tract does have some post-production work added. Jinjer does their best work in concert. Tatiana is the front woman and lead singer for the band. She is a world-class growler and can switch and modify her vocals in a nanosecond. That is Tatiana's superpower. Every song is different, and they never gets boring or stale. Jinjer is one of the best bands in progressive metal today.

There is a vocal backing track in parts. This was technically a re-recording session to showcase the drummer. Pisces the song itself is still considered an "unfinished" song by the band even though it was on an album release. The band has stated in interviews and such that they have never really been happy with the song and they regret that it was the song that basically introduced them to an international audience. This song has been rewritten and re-recorded multiple times and the version that exists now started with a completely different ending when it was recorded for the album and was changed last minute during the recording process. Eugene wrote the lyrics at the end of this version, and is the original writer of the song itself (started with the bass line)

Holy shit. You picked it was up in 7 in like 10s? That's freaking amazing. Props to you! Sorry, watching the rest of the reaction right now. Vlad (the drummer) is classically trained in piano (there's a vid of him playing Rachmaninoff on yt) but he mostly played guitar...until the drummer in one of his former bands quit, so he taught himself how to play drums. Insanely talented musician (as are all of the other members of this band) This "live session" does involve some backing vocals and other effects, but these guys can absolutely produce this same sound live. This was their intro to Vlad joining the band. There are a bunch of playthroughs on their yt channel (jinjer metal band) so feel free to take your pick. I waver between my favourites from them, but it's either Teacher Teacher or I Speak Astronomy. Both OMVs are amazing. Hope to see you check one of them out!

I think what blows me back the most about her growls is how relatively easy it is to pick up on what she is growling. In a lot of European death metal, especially in Swedish death metal like Dark Tranquility, Hypocrisy and especially Opeth the growls are produced in a way that give a quite clean sound. Tatiana from Jinjer has the same quality.

So Vlad (the drummer) started out as a classical pianist so I think that's the origin of his split stick technique because of course piano players rarely cross their hands when playing. His current kit has two floor toms, one on the left side of his hihat and a rack tom in the place of a floor tom next to the kick. An auxiliary snare between the rack tom and the floor tom on his right that is 12" in diameter. K Zildjian cymbals. There are several really good drum playthroughs from him on KZbin. The best one being for their song Mediator. You've already gotten some good suggestions but from a drummers perspective I would definitely second the suggestion about Perennial Live at Wacken Open Air. Also Home Back, Wallflower, Vortex, On the Top Live in Kyiv and Pit of Consciousness Live in Kyiv and Judgement and Punishment One Take Vocal. Jinjer is from Ukriane. They grew up during the transition from the USSR to Ukrainian independence and so they've been through a lot. This song is about Tatiana's nature as someone born as a Pisces.

The false-fold scream doesn't use the vocal chords we speak and sing with; it's the folds that make noise when we clear our throats. Tatiana has absolutely mastered the false-fold scream, which is why she can flip back and forth so quickly. Also, the drummer was a concert pianist, and learned how to play the drums specifically for Jinjer. I'm supposing he keeps his drums lower because it's more efficient. You'll notice his elbow rise during the cymbal crashes, so it might help to raise the cymbals a tad, but that's just me guessing.

Jinjer's song Teacher Teacher would be a great next step, since it showcases a harder sound and some great stylistic range for Tatiana, the lead vocalist. This was done right after Vlad, the drummer, joined the band. This was recorded to show off his talents. For a good number of their songs, he's more of a jazz drummer than metal. I would suggest "Pit of Consciousness", live in Kiev, next.

This is the song that most people suggest to get introduced to Jinjer. You said that you liked her switch between clean and her growl. If you truly want to see some of her most crazy and instant transitions check out - JINJER - Perennial (Live at Wacken Open Air 2019) | Napalm Records It's just nuts.

Honestly, (to me) Tatiana is an incredible vocalist but the drummer blows my mind with his skill and arrangement. He defies what people normally do and his ghost notes could paint a portrait on their own. Beautifully driven beat and VERY uncommon.

This video is live and she can sing like that and switch fast. But .... the video is also heavily post processed. There are layers added. And other stuff. But mainly, it is a very professional live take up. I like to go back and listen to this. Partly because of the fantastic song and performance. But also for the very impressive studio work.

You might be the fastest to recognize the time signatures. And your all around musical fluency is appreciated. As others have said theres a lot of post production on this. Perennial is a great followup to hear them do their thing on stage (though there's one bit where they added some light clean layering to that which isn't in the bootlegs.

Heh yeah, Vlad is a conservatory-trained classical pianist who self-taught the drums. He approaches the kit very much like he would a piano, lots of dynamics, amazing limb independence, tons of musicality. He's the driver behind a lot of Jinjer's modern sound as they've gotten more and more proggy. I don't think he actually is left-handed, just prefers the open style.

My fave pocket rocket Tati! They were INCREDIBLE when I saw them at their first show in my city. The crowd was aggressive but also organised in the chaos. So interesting with their time sigs etc. Also I can do guttural growls, not as good as her but not bad, and yeah my voice is absolutely fine. You know you're doing it right when you can like just switch back without the growling doesn't linger. All the turbulence is above the larynx. I've still got my tonsils & yeah they absolutely play a part.

Great reaction Matt. I never tire of the look on people's faces when Tatiana switches it up on this tune. If you're looking for another band to react to I would strongly recommend Nightwish.
