I want to thank you for all you are teaching me. My grandmother on mothers side lived through the war in Den Haag and told much and more about it, so in a way, you are honoring her memory to me :) I do not know if this might be of interest to you, but at the technichal university of Delft there were at least two professors, Jan Mekel and Richard Schoemaker, who started resistance groups. Could you maybe in the future do a video on them perhaps? Again, I thank you for all you are doing, especially in these trying times for everyone around the world. Max, from Holland

Albert Speer quotes Hitler as dismissing Quisling-and Mussert-as "copyists", the Germans pretty much treated the native Fascists/National Socialists with contempt, dismissing them as wannabes. Mussert was proclaimed as "Leader" of the Dutch People but given no real authority.

My one visit to Amsterdam to work and live for two months before moving on showed me how much the Dutch hated the Germans. Despite the Gilder at that time being index linked to the Deutschmark many young Germans came to Holland to take advantage of the liberal attitude towards drugs. I met many heroin addicts that would cross the border for this reason. That was in 1988. I was traveling with a friend to work our way to Isreal. We never got there. He killed himself and I ended up with a diagnosis of schizophrenia. I feel Europe was my battle field, alone and afraid I lived a cowards life. Mussert must have been very much the same. Alone, putting on a show and collaborating with hostile authorities. He probably wanted to die for his crimes but still thought he could get a reprieve. Was it destiny or unfortunate circumstances that led to his downfall? Certainly there were collaborators who got away with their crimes. No wonder the Dutch, as a people, are very tough and uncompromising when it comes to their culture.

The Netherlands are actually one of the oldest democracies in the world and one of the few European countries that stayed democratic during the Interbellum years, despite Anton Mussert and his NSB.
