What I found most impressive is how both he and Milo talked-down the guy who thought using identity politics was a good way forward, since everyone else is doing it. That chat around the 30 minute mark with the student who asked if we should join in with the identity politics is a really great example of grown men directing young men in a less radical direction. What you have to ask is why do people want to shut down this kind of discourse and the exercise of free speech in general? I'd suggest that most people are actually whipped up by the media to oppose the horrible persona that the media build, and if people do talk and form their own opinions they will most likely be pleasantly surprised. The reason society is so divided right now is that people don't talk to people with opposing views and sometimes assume that the other person is either dumb or bigoted.

Demonizing and shaming racists, both real and perceived racists, is the absolute worst response. Our Constitution was set up so that the power to deal with any particular issue should be done at the lowest level of government possible. So, only those things that effect all the states equally should be handled at the federal level. Do not get me wrong, while I am a libertarian, I am not an ancap. I do believe that there is a role for government. I just want as little government interference as we can reasonably have.

Regarding being “English” I think too many people. Including Carl here, mix up being English with being British, or having English culture, or English nationality. The English are an specific ethnic group. Any ethnic group can ACT like the English or feel English, or be an English National. Any ethnic group can BE British. But only the English are technically English. Just as a white European can move to Japan, speak Japanese, be entirely consumed by Japanese culture, paper walls, sit on the floor and drink tea etc etc. But that doesn’t make him of Japanese ethnic group. This isn’t me being racist. Just being pedantic. When you tick an official box stating your ethnicity. It says “English” (on some official forms but not all) and that is a specific ethnic group, with a clearly defined genetic heritage. Now, personally I don’t care what skin colour or what ethnicity anyone has. I agree with Carl as far as race is concerned we should be colourblind in terms of how we deal with our fellow man. But we should also be aware (just for accuracy) that being English. Is a specific ethnic group. You technically can’t be Black and have English as your sole ethnic group. You can’t be Asian and have English as your sole ethnic group. You can of course be mixed ethnicity including English and anything else. Also it’s worth pointing out that ethnicity and race are not the same. Also also, you can of course have English nationality, and this is different to being English. I realise these groupings do overlap, and in contemporary use they are used interchangeably. But I think that may well be part of why we often feel like we have no identity. Perhaps we should all know a bit more about our heritage and roots. This may ground us more, and tie us into our own rich history. (As to me, I’m a bit of a mongrel of mostly English, Irish and Welsh... god help me. XD)
