1:45 - That lamp you're walking past is a surviving remnant of an earlier incarnation of the Exe Bridge, dismantled in around 1970. 3:05 - The old historic West Quarter was butchered by Exeter City Council in the 1960s as part of a road-widening scheme. The House That Moved was originally known as "The Merchant House", and was found on the junction of old Edmund Street (the site of the Medieval Exe Bridge - the bridge was the foundation, believe it or not, of a tarmacked and busy main road that was surrounded by houses and still in heavy use until the mid-1960s), and Frog Street. Frog Street is today part of the Western Way, starting under New Bridge Street and ending at the site of the West Gate plaque. But in the 1960s Frog Street was a very narrow lane lined with old early-modern era houses, which were all ruthlessly demolished to make way for the new by-pass. THTM was lifted off its foundations and rolled up the slope to the foot of West Street, where a similar house had been demolished a couple of decades earlier, and set on new foundations. You can see film of the process of moving it if you search on KZbin for "Look at Life 44 The Village Sleeps Again 1962" - a little over two minutes in. You may be startled to see how different the area looked back then. 5:00 - The guitarist you're thinking of is probably Matt Bellamy of Muse. 5:58 - Phonetically, it's "Bar-foll-ah-mew." 6:26 - The odd metal contraption on the wall just behind you marks the site of "The Snayle Tower", which was a very strong defensive fortification that played a big role in protecting the city, especially in the civil wars. The house behind the marker is also called Snayle Tower as a tribute, The car park on the other side of the wall obviously wasn't there until fairly recently, when the land was raised with artificial embankments, so the wall was essentially the top of a pretty high cliff face for centuries. 6:45 - My personal favourite restaurant in Exeter is the White Hart Inn on South Street, a genuine 16th Century Tavern converted into a modern hotel. 6:56 - The church dominating the northern side of the city is St. Michael's. I used to wake up every morning to a view of it from my bedroom window as a kid, as I lived on Haldon Road at the top of St. David's Hill, just around the corner from the church. 7:10 - Gandy Street is very special, because it gives a very strong hint as to what Exeter city centre used to look like prior to World War II - lots of winding narrow lanes and old-style architecture, like a rabbit warren almost. Sadly, the city was badly burned by the 'Baedeker Blitz' of 1942, when the Luftwaffe bombed five of England's most historic towns as revenge for the needless destruction of Lubeck and Rostock (the other towns were Bath, Canterbury, Norwich and York). The heart of the city, full of old timber-framed buildings, was burned down, and rebuilt in a more modern, less appealing style in the 50s and 60s. (This is why so many of the buildings on South Street and Sidwell Street all look so samey, mundane and bricky; it was impossible to rebuild the treasures that had been there before.) Exeter is still a lovely place overall, but it isn't what it used to be. 8:20 - The building where we have that rather odd mural of someone-or-other on the wall is the place where the great fire of 1942 came to a halt along the north side of the High Street. The south side was also very badly burned and lost lots of irreplaceable buildings too. But for most of its history, the High Street was the same narrow width all the way along. Today, the Lower High Street is very narrow, the Upper High Street far wider. The Lower High Street also retains a lot of older style building facades, whereas the Upper High Street is far more 20th Century and monolithic, and it's because that half of the street was left in ruins by the war. Many adjoining streets, especially to the south of the High Street, were also completely destroyed. Catherine Street, Bedford Street, Paris Street, Bedford Circus, Summerland Street, and Cheeke Street were all completely destroyed. The extent of the devastation isn't always understood today. 8:45 - No, that's not the City Walls. Those are the ruins of St. Katherine's Almshouses, which were a shelter for poor people who worked for the Cathedral from the mid-15th Century. They were actually well-maintained and in very good condition well into the 20th Century, but they were another unfortunate victim of the Baedeker Blitz of May 1942. The ruin is kept today as a memorial. 9:15 - I agree with you about indoor shopping centres being horrible, but don't forget that Exeter has the utilitarian horror that is the Guildhall Shopping Centre! Probably the most appalling mistake the city made in all of the 1970s was demolishing about five streets full of picturesque shopping buildings and replacing them with that... *thing*. And most of it is indoors. 10:00 - Princesshay is quite new, and has existed in two forms. It was originally built in a very 1950s, bricks-'n'-mortar style in 1949. The Queen herself, at that time still a Princess, hosted a ceremony to begin the construction work, and that's where the name comes from. ("-hay" is a frequent suffix in the Devon dialect and simply means 'boundary'. Therefore, just for example, the gardens at "Northernhay" are just the northern boundary of the ancient city.) The architecture of this incarnation was all a bit one-note and unimpressive, and by the end of the 20th Century, most of the premises available in it were becoming undersized for modern big companies. So in 2005, they pulled it all down and tried again, and Princesshay now exists in this very plutocratic form. I'm not sure I entirely like it, it does have a very pronounced stink of Big Money to it, but it is definitely an improvement on the original version I grew up with. That blue statue, by the way, is all that survives of St John's Hospital School, which had taught pupils for several centuries on a site just to the south of Eastgate. The school was another victim of the Baedeker Blitz and was totally destroyed by fire. Both incarnations of Princesshay were designed to have the towers of the Cathedral 'framed' between the buildings as you walked along. The site of Princesshay was previously a very fine ring of over 20 Georgian Mansions called 'Bedford Circus,' which was a key administrative hub of the city throughout the 19th Century. Alas, Bedford Circus was yet another piece of the old city lost to the German bombers. Next time you're at the spot where you're stood at 10:03, look up. You will see two statues high up on either side of the street. One is the statue of Despair, covering its eyes in horror as the city burns down, and the other is the statue of hope, looking forward in optimism to the day the city is rebuilt and returns to life. 10:50 - THOSE are the City Walls. 12:00 - A little puzzle for you. One of the buildings on the Cathedral Close was destroyed by a wartime bomb, but rebuilt entirely from scratch to appear exactly the same after the war. The rebuild was so perfect that most people have no idea which building it is, cannot tell it apart from all the others, and would be completely unable to guess that it isn't the original. Can you figure out which one it is?

I will say but it’s cobbled and not comfortable for wheelchairs and also you can’t get into most of the shops in a wheelchair on the quay. Fore street is difficult in fact near on impossible to use the shops in a wheelchair too. I can get in most of the arcade shops but with help can get in the real McCoy too. I wish princesshay was covered all through, they didn’t want to as wanted to be able to still see the Cathedral. Mainly you can eat or shop in Exeter, there are cinemas and small theatres but not really a lot to do. You should go in the cathedral it’s magnificent and the clock in there was the clock that inspired the nursery rhyme hickory, dickory dock.
