Diesels don't create vacuums. But they use this butterfly system to restrict some exhaust to slow the crank then the drive shaft and last the wheels.

Luisito 713 the question is what causes the exhaust brake to switch on, air pressure or a vacuum (commonly seen in small trucks e.g. Japanese trucks without the necessity for an air system but still necessity for an exhaust brake)

@@Lou_TX diesel may not create vacuum but they have a vacumm pump on them. It runs the brakes amd some models other things. These exhaust brakes are activated by either air pressure or vacuum actuator.

Based off the sound, oil pan shape and the fact it's an RV of sorts, probably an 8.3 Cummins.

just bought my first diesel. Isuzu npr. exhaust brake dash lite is always on. runs great and brakes like any gas vehicle. does the brake pedal actuate the baffle to close for the back pressure, cause I think my lite is on and is not closeing. I don't have that sound like it's back pressuring. but everything seems ok besides mileage i'l have to check. would it run funny if trying to throttle being closed? any advice or thoughts wpuld be helpful, thanks

brad carroll if the light is on most likely the engine brake is on, turn it off and you will be much more happy with it lol

Your dpf is probably plugged. Gotta do a Regen and clean it out. Will fix the mpg and the exhaust brake
