I've gone back to your old videos and just got caught up to the rebuild of the Dodge. I'm very impressed with you capacity for not becoming overwhelmed . My brain would seize up. I've never gone that far north. The furthest we went is Lake Louise. We finally have passports and will head north to show my wife and kids the beauty of Canada.

When you decide to visit Canada, don't forget the entry fee. Be sure to bring 12lbs of bacon, 3 beavers, 2 gallons of maple syrup and 8 large servings of poutine. For each border guard.

When I had my 97' 5.9 rebuilt they installed 60# exhaust and intake valve springs. I was told by the mechanic who rebuilt the motor that the 40# springs weren't heavy enough to prevent the engine from sucking a valve. I never did install an exhaust brake on the engine but it was a good selling point when I sold the truck. I owned that truck for 20 years btw, and it had 406,000 miles on it (50,000 on the new engine). My new to me 2014 Ram 3500 duelly 4x4 has a factory installed exhaust brake and it works wonderfully. We have a 43' toy hauler and the exhaust brake really saves on the brakes.

I agree with Dustin’s comment about having an exhaust brake. As he said in the video, “it’s pretty exciting” to have an exhaust brake, but he has omitted a couple of important factors. It is actually VERY exciting to be able to safely travel down a very long, and very steep, mountain road, and to feel that you have the vehicle under complete control. There are a few aspects though, which need to be considered and understood, which were not referred to in this video. My experience with an exhaust brake has been on a Toyota Coaster (22 seater) bus which I converted into a motor-home. Dustin explained some details about the exhaust brake on his truck, and basically explained how the use of the throttle/accelerator pedal inactivates the exhaust brake. There are actually several other sensors which an exhaust brake system requires for it to operate optimally. The exhaust brake works by a valve closing off the exhaust system, which causes the pressure of the exhaust gases in the exhaust manifold to increase, and therefore to make it difficult for the motor to keep rotating. This is similar to what happens when you select a low gear, or first gear, to provide “engine braking” as you descend a hill, but an exhaust brake is MUCH MORE effective in providing this kind of engine braking. If the exhaust brake is active, the engine will not run normally under idle conditions, because the exhaust brake valve will try to “suffocate” the engine. It is therefore very important that the exhaust brake shall be de-activated instantly whenever the engine is required to run at idle, or to operate under load. For example, the exhaust brake system needs to be inactive if the vehicle is in neutral gear, or if the vehicle has come to a complete stop, or if you are changing gear (i.e. when you have your foot on the clutch pedal). For these reasons, the exhaust brake system on my vehicle has sensors on the accelerator pedal, the clutch pedal, and neutral-gear selector. All of these sensors need to be installed in series with each other in the circuit which controls the exhaust brake. If any one of these sensors is activated, the exhaust-brake is inactivated. I hope that this explanation will be of benefit to anyone who has the option of using an exhaust brake system, and I hope that Dustin is able to get the best use of this system on his truck.

I've had a 2018 and now a 2022 Ram Cummins, the exhaust brake is great! I turn it on as soon as I start the truck. I went 170k on my last brakes before I needed new brake pads. Super handy.

As a Dodge Tech back in the 2000’s we used to install these regularly on all the 5.9 Cummins We used PAC BRAKE and BD exhaust brakes mostly. They work incredibly well and just FYI you can’t get a Dodge 1 Ton with a 2 spd. Rear end but you CAN get a MileMarker overdrive installed on the trans which allows you to split every gear in the trans. Dustin. Very advantageous for a Heavy rig going through the mountains. Cheers from Alberta!

I drive a 5 tonne manual diesel housebus. In New Zealand. Lots of twisty, winding unsealed roads and the exhaust brake is a godsend. Apart from slowing the vehicle down, the 'revs' are preserved... so when you come out of the corner or reach the bottom of the hill ...simply accelerate and you don't have to change right down the gears. I had a vague understanding how the system works...but thanks for explaini g the electricals. Enjoy your channel.

A Jake Brake releases the pressure from the compression stroke from the head at top dead center, The Jake Brake was first introduced in 1961. The exhaust braking system was developed in the 1920's, and was first used on a Cummins engine going back to the 1930s

We ran compression release on the old TM 400 Suzuki back in the day to ease cranking....They would hurt 🤕 you without it...That being said it worked and sounded similar when releasing coming off a hill...I grew up in the hills of Virginia...Coal truck everywhere....was a everyday thing hearing Jake brake released

Close enough Dustin! Jake Brakes are indeed integrated in the valve train and used to be completely mechanical. However at this point I would imagine they are computer controlled. Really enjoying following your trip this year and always look forward to watching the episodes. Safe travels my friend!

You can’t beat these old diesel’s especially if they are a manual shift, I’ve got a 1997 ford f350 7.3 turbo crew cab and won’t give up the ol girl for anything, the old 12’s & 7.3’s will last forever as long as you take care of them , no computer or sensors to let you down ! Thanks for a very informative mechanical tech video Dustin and to all the other patrons who’ve added a tip or two on keeping these ol girls rolling black coal ! Safe journeys to you and Emi and we can’t wait till Saturday morning mate !👍🇨🇦

Hey Dustin, can you imitate that Jake brake sound again?(;>) In all seriousness, having an exhaust brake/Jake brake/retarder is something that will save you a ton of money replacing brakes on your pick-up. I got 200,000 miles on my 2001 duramax before I changed pads. I've towed a lot with it using a bumper pull, BW 5th wheel, and gooseneck trailers.

On my 1974 F-100 I too had a switch on the 4 speed shifter and got stopped one night. The officer noticed it and asked the same question, you have a 2 speed rear end? I explained that it was for all the lights on the front of the truck, I had 2 KC Daylighters pencil beams on the winch bumper and 2 behind the cab on the front of the fiberglass cover. I got a warning about speeding.

I seem to recall that you need stronger exhaust valve springs for the exhaust brake to work correctly. Jake brakes (Jacob the inventer) use solenoids to hold the exhaust valves shut and therefore create pressure in the cylinder which in turn slows the crankshaft down. I opted to convert my rear axle brakes from brake shoes to disc brakes instead of adding an engine brake. Way more effective in my opinion.

I had the same switch in my 96 but they used it to actuate the gearvendor unit. The exhaust brake was on there too but i dont think they ever ran a new switch for it

A lot of people don't know that exhaust brakes and Jake brakes are different. You can absolutely tell the difference by sound. When you live in a mining town, and your house is 3 blocks from the highway, and you hear Jake brakes at 3am, even though there's a city bylaw that says use of Jake Brakes prohibited in city limits... it's like entitled drivers thinking the cops have to catch 'em first. 🙄

@polarlicht47584 ай бұрын
The engine can't push the exhaust fumes out and keeps them inside in a certain pressure, which generates resistance and it slows the vehicle down.
