I know its several months old. But I haven't seen anyone mention this. When you were checking fault codes, you hit enter and got into the codes menu. You saw the PCU error, but when you went to scroll through the list, instead of hitting up or down, you hit menu, which should act like a back button. So you likely backed out of the faults menu back to the previous screen instead of scrolling. I can see how it would be easy to do, your finger is nearly big enough to hit two buttons at once. And the silk screen print telling you which was which is tiny.

Watched this video on the 31. I'm a total rookie in commercial and never even worked on am exhaust fan. A customer called my residential appliance co. and for help as he couldn't get anyone else out new year day. My lucky day this is the same system he has. I knew exactly where to look and what to look for. Even though it was a simple repair sure made a good impression. I love how detail oriented you are and that you take your time to do it right.

I work part time in a restaurant and I noticed the fans doing that exact same thing today. Good thing I’m working tomorrow so that I can check that. So Ive come across this many times. I recommend checking the manual to auto function, I would set it to as many hours the restaurant is open, like 16 hours. You can preset the room temp to always be a specific temp, like 75 degrees. It gets even more fun with the newer features, prep time and vfds

You do a great job with these videos, and your deductions are accurate. Unfortunately, there is a tradeoff with electronics such as these --- you get an absolutely amazing variety of options, usually with none or very little additional hardware (most of the time an extra terminal block here or there), many of which are extremely difficult or impossible to achieve the old-fashioned (analog) way. On the other hand, they can be really wonky in a very random fashion after a power outage or a power surge, whereas analog can be a bit more forgiving. You are correct in that there is an adjustable offset that is used to compare the hood temperatures to the room temperature, to decide when to automatically turn on. In this situation, if getting an accurate room reading is difficult, you can go into the configuration and set temp sensor #1 (the room sensor) to "preset", which then assumes that the room is 75 degrees at all times. A lot of end users like the auto setting because they don't have to bother with turning the fans on and off --- sounds lazy, but it's one less thing to worry about. You'd be surprised how often people forget to simply turn the fans off at the end of the day (which can also be fixed with activating the manual-to-auto option, as mentioned). Love the videos, and appreciate the hard work you put into this!

This is a case of what I call "white coat syndrome", where the problem is no longer happening when the technician shows up (the guy in the white coat, therefore the name). Happens all the time in automotive repair, and I assume most other trades too. Usually prior experience is the only reliable quick way of fixing these, otherwise you have to do like you did and go thru the whole diagnostic procedure looking for "fingerprints" of the issue, evidence that something is still not quite right. Evidence like that temperature sensor reading being wacky is exactly the kind of thing you're looking for. Around my area, if it's a car you get under the hood and start wiggling wires and looking for the green fuzz of copper oxidation, which means you have a wire that chafed thru, then corroded thru, and now only conducts current half the time. Intermittent issues then show up because one bump in the road might sever the connection, the issue shows up, then they go over another pothole, the circuit completes (probably poorly) again, and now the issue's gone. My dad has gotten really good at finding those kind of issues, if I have one I can't crack I give it to him and he's found it within 2 hours usually.

Something to consider on these, we have somewhere in the range of 30 or so of these where I work. We have had issues with the reliability of the sensors and losing settings after power loss. A few months ago we had a guy out from Captive Air ...he plugged into every one of them with his laptop and updated the software. Since then we have had far less issues with them.

I would recommend getting a battery operated heat gun would come in handy at a time like this and checking other temp sensors. Also would work with shrink wrap as well edit my dyslexic brain left a few words out

In the HMI, pressing the top two buttons. If you went into factory settings, temp sensor config, temp sensor 1. Assignment. Preset. Sets the room to 75 degrees factory Would have saved a lot of trouble

I've never been a huge fan of the automatic hoods, but they are becoming required by code in a lot of areas. I had no idea that there is a room sensor for the hood. I figured it just operated on a fixed temperature using the sensors in the hood. I don't see why that is necessary, but I'm not a kitchen hood expert.

Without the room temp it would just be an AC, with the room sensor it can try to make out if the actual kitchen supplies are turned on/heating.

I work for captiveaire and this is a common complaint. Most of the time the chefs are not pressing the button - fans on. They come in and cook something, temp sensor senses a rise in temp(you can adjust the offset but usually 10-25 degrees above room temp, the fans will come on) fans come on, they stop cooking , sensor sees a drop in temp, and eventually the hood shuts off and they don’t know why the hood shit down. If there is not a sensor bad or misplaced, I always tell them to turn the fans on by button, that way, if it happens again, we’ll know there something deeper going on

Do your exhaust fans not complete the circuit? All of the ones here in Iowa that I work on complete the circuit so if an exhaust fan fails, the fryer/grill shuts off as well. So when changing belts or motors, we have to make sure they are not cooking or have enough in the cabinet to get them by for a little bit. It can be a pain, but it also helps because we it’s easier to know whether a fan is not pulling enough air or is not working.

I think that is one of the most difficult parts of troubleshooting when there is no way to reproduce the issue and you just have to take what you know and use it to the best of your ability. Worked on a captive air, they were shut off from the breaker and when power was restored the system that runs the automation permanently locked out the MUA and I had to reset the whole system with customer service and it took about 30 minutes

I just ran a similar call but instead of room sensor getting fooled, the hood temp was being fooled by a worn belt. Fan was moving so little air that the sensor differential would get close enough to stop calling for exhaust fan. So basically low air flow was resulting in no call for airflow 🤦‍♂️

We have a system that shuts off every 20 min, and we have to push the max air button everytime is that normal? When it shurs off and sometimes we forget and it gets a little smokey the fire alarm comes on, police come and everything, the engineers say it's built that way, is this correct?

I'm not in your business but I would schedule those belts for down time. Unless you have permission and they understand they may have to move to another cooking surface. What if something goes wrong. I am in the IT business and work on servers and it's almost the same thing with having to take into consideration the impact on customers operations.

That's how user interface on the hood gets power and communicates with the control board. These are also capable of remote monitoring and controlling over the Internet.

All 5 of those RJ-45 ports are modbus. The bottom 3 also supply power which can be used for HMI's, the top 2 ports would be used for VFD's.

The top two ports are for "communication", for programming the options into the board at the factory (or in the field, if you have the software & equipment), and also optional monitoring over the internet using an optional module. The bottom three are modbus (think of it as internal communications), used to work with HMIs, VFDs, communicating with other circuit boards, etc.

sounds to me like the magical control panel at the hood is going wonky. good old junktronics. maybe the backup battery on the control board, possibly another in the control button panel? look like standard CR2032, used in many things including computer motherboards.

My customer has a 20' hood. 2 fans He's only using the first 7 to 10 feet of it. Can he turn the 2nd fan off and seal it so it's not taking in grease. There's no stove appliances on that end, none.

That is a correct assumption via temperature probes *in the hood* forcing on/off especially with frost on the roof, it’s cold outside, if the MUA is un-tempered. And as that air comes back in it can quickly trigger the need for no exhaust. Those room sensors are completely worthless.

Actually, if you were listening, you would have heard that the air IS tempered, and is, in fact, warmer than the ambient room temperature. What is worthless is the location of the room sensor.

@@shingledubber That was the air coming out of the ceiling grill from the air-handler into the space at the room sensor. Not the dedicated MUA at the hood supply plenum which would supply air to the hood and is the primary air that would go to the temp sensor in the hood. Two completely different air streams, he did not comment on the incoming MUA@ the hood.
