I discovered Joan Broen's work as a part of th great Bay Area Figurative Art exhibition at the Hirschorn Museum in the early 90's. The works in that exhibit represented her early style with very heavily built up paint surfaces which I continue to value highly. It is interesting to see how she evolved. Her horrifying passing is really heartbreaking.
