As I was scrolling through Facebook, a friend shared an article about this movie. It mentioned that the ritual performed in the film is indeed a real one. Consequently, I have been intrigued by this film and am looking forward to watching it.

I liked the whole movie. I love the richness of Jang Jae Hyun's movies and I can say this one was the most properly connected in terms of storyline & cultural, historical connections. While I enjoyed the first half I didn't think movie flopped at the second half. Horror genre has become predictable, shallow w Hollywood treating it as a quick cash grab and I like the Exhuma's second half bc It made me feel completely loss. You can kinda guess what will happen in the first half but second half was so rich in historical context and I find the final blow very clever too. Also effects of horror elements were so well done.

Second half certainly took me by surprise. I do certainly look forward to watching it again soon.

The background of this Seven Years' War is that the carelessness and arrogance of Joseon (Korea), which enjoyed only peace and culture for 200 years, treated Yamato (Japan) as a barbaric pirate group rather than a country. However, Yamato had a high level of tactics through clan battles for 100 years, and the 170,000 troops of Toyotomi, who unified the whole country, armed with Portuguese matchlocks and attacked Joseon. Historically, Japan has waged a surprise war without a declaration of war.The 16,000 Elite heavy cavalry that Joseon was proud of, which had suppressed the cruel northern peoples, was defeated by the Yamato Matchlock unit, and 70, 000 Joseon Army was pushed back all the way to Pyongyang. Yamato, which was a medieval feudal lord era, gained land and people if it won a war, but in Joseon, which was a centralized country, the king fled to the north, but the people and monks formed a militia and fought to the end , the Japanese army was embarrassed by the existence of the Militia. The basic weapons of the Joseon army were bows, spears, and swords, as well as gunpowder bombs and various cannons of different sizes..The Ming Dynasty (China) sent reinforcements to help Joseon, but instead harassed Joseon by plundering and engaging in internal communication with Japan, but helped Yi Sun sin in the final naval battle.Yamato, who did not have the technology to make pottery, brought in hundreds of Joseon pottery craftsmen to make pottery and exported the pottery to Europe, where it received favorable reviews. Joseon was unable to recover from the aftereffects of this war for 400 years and suffered the humiliation of being annexed by Japan, which it regarded as an uncivilized island, and being ruled for 35 years. This Great War was a symbolic event in which the international status of the Korean Peninsula with 4,800 years of history was reversed by the Japanese archipelago with 1,800 years of history. 300 years later, Joseon became a reclusive country with a policy of isolation, and Japan defeated the Russian Navy with Yi Sun-sin's tactics. and joined the ranks of the great powers. Yi Sun sin's the world's top 3 naval admiral and the turtle ship is an invincible Korean Item in the Age of Empires PC Games.

nice review. I love the movie a lot too. It's similar in a way to The Wailing, that it finally scratched the itch for another horror like it. btw, love the Infernal Affairs booklet at the back.

One thing I appreciate is that the director is not trying to portray Buddhism/Taoism in a suggestively negative way just to make his own religion Christianity look heroic like in his previous horror movies (maybe he's read my criticism comments haha) ... Here we get a positive portrayal of these buddhist taoist practitioners trying to save a family and also their nation and each other while christianity is only casually mentioned without any biased comparisons .. thank goodness...

I agree that the first half was really great and second half not so much. And while generational trauma etc etc is very much a real thing, it feels off that they found a way, yet again, to make Japan villains in a movie set in modern day Korea, where Koreans are the super cool heroes. Like, we get it. It could have been more interesting not to create this ending, this kind of tableau of Korean victimhood.

Always same craps from so called "online expert" who knows nothing about the whole history and details. Guess what? Japan indeed nailed iron rods all over the land and this movie is using it as part of source for its fictional story.

The atmosphere of the second half is still maintained, the main thing to puts me off to make it less scary is when the demon starts talking like a typical Power Ranger villain ... it suddenly becomes a bit cheesy ... The talking destroys all the mysterious vibe they have been building up ... and the very ending where the hero suddenly thinks of the solution in the last second is also a cheesy trope repeated ad nauseam countless times before in cartoons and martial arts series/movies ... ... but I still enjoy the second half tremendously due to the gripping tension in dealing with the entity, just not in the ways I wish it could have gone....

Japanese may have been successful in hiding the origin of Japan's royal family lineage through the gimmick of mythology. But the historical fact remains, that is to say, Japan hat robbed tombs of Kayah royal family and stoled treasures from the tombs and transported by train twice into Japan's royal family storehouse called "Shoshoin." in order to lay claim to "Im Na Japan" in Kayah kingdom. However, they did not know that Kayah kingdom had been established by Didymos Thomas who came in AD 41 in Kimhae. King Kim Suro and queen Hur are of Jewish origin. So, Korea was the first Christian nation before Buddhism, Christianity and Confucianism had come into Korean peninsula. On this account, I am very intriqued to know what would have happened to Japanese robbers who did plundered the tombs of Kayah royal family. This story will become the 2nd Exhuma of Japanese version.

It was a bad watch overall, I enjoyed the first half then the second half just had Korean nationalist sentiment and a lot of stuff just did not add up.

I would have been okay with the very obvious propaganda of the second half of the film if it was executed well. But from the moment they decided to get that second coffin out I lost interest. Like they had zero reason to do so. The flying ball was goofy af, they coulda gave more time to the origin story of the warrior/katana.

Bull Shit and totally crap movie.. Better watch 90's Tamil Horror movies like Uruvam, Jameen Kottai, Karuppu Roja, Andhi Varum Neram etc. in KZbin. Both the Ghosts First Park's Grandfather (somewhat stronger and useless illogic tension buildup) and that 2nd half Dummy Japanese Samurai So called Demon Ghost, worthless only mouth build up got killed easily with too many continuity mistakes and logic less scenes. Still don't know what happed to that one digger who haunted by the snake ghost which Hero promised to help. All rituals copied from old ancient Tamil rituals. And heroine and actors not up to how Tamil actors acting. I will give 0/100 for this crap Exhuma, glad no second part or disappointed end like The Wailing movie....
