Fun-Filled Fact: The designation for the canonical Marvel continuity was established by Alan Moore during his Captain Britain run. Given how 616 is an alternate reading of the Number of the Beast (and that Moore was pissed over Marvel’s legal dispute with Marvelman/Miracleman at the time) you can read this as his own subtle way of throwing shade at the company.

I don't mind the idea that the multiverse changes how it works over time, my view on it is "If you think you understand the multiverse, it takes that as a challenge", which also handily explains why different creative teams depict it differently. I do agree that having it at the tail end like this cheapens the previous adventures, that's something you should have right from the start.

It was these reviews that got me to pick up that recent massively short-lived Exiles series. Also helped that it featured an alt Kamala Khan and came out at the height of my love for the character.

Iman Vellani’s current miniseries is also really good. Though I’m waiting for Marvel to go all in on a Kamala Khan Spider-Verse event in the future.

The Exiles can be a ton of fun and are probably my personal favorite multiverse story out there. So many good stories. I did a reread of the whole shebang about a year ago and enjoyed it just as much as my first time through

It’s such a shame that Claremont couldn’t bring the same level of success to Exile he brought to X-Men back in the day. That said, everything before he took over is a great romp. Big Sci-Fi adventure series with a lot of drama and tragedy and character development. Very well done.

My guess is that's something they might do in Phase 5 since they've hinted the X-Men are planned for that.

I suspect that the MCU will get canceled and possibly retooled before that happens. There's definitely some serious audience fatigue with superhero films now.

@@gracekim25 Why not? The MCU is a bloated mess with convoluted plot points that require audiences to have seen several dozen other film and six to eight shows on Disney Plus at this point. Wave Five is doing badly because audiences are burned out by everything. Ending the current MCU and starting a line of new movies that give new viewers an easy entrance point would be a good idea.

1:01:44 It's taken me years to realize this, but: the orange jumpsuits the characters are wearing in the giant monster world are the Science Patrol uniforms from Ultraman. This was DECADES before Marvel acquired the Ultraman license, so someone working on the book was a serious tokusatsu fan :)

Jean Gray was actually pulled from an alternate wheel of time, where she was meant to be the dragon reborn, by the time broker. Which is why she will live and die a multitude of times.

It's funny how the villain of the Exiles is the Time Breaker, because the villainous organization that's opposing the Time Patrol in extended Dragon Ball content (like Xenoverse) are called the Time Breakers.

I always loved the Exiles comics. The continuous changes to the roster, starring role for one of my favourties in Mimic and the way-out-there stories. I had a short time of hope that DIsney would jump on the Loki/TVA bandwagen and create an exiles series based on variants that get unhinged after pruning of their home worlds. Helas, it was not to be.

I am a huge fan of the eXiles. Was at my LCS and saw the cover of issue #18 (Morph as Elvis Presley), and it was love at 1st sight. I bought every issue afterwards and bought the first two trades and some comics to get me caught up. It was my favorite ongoing at the time. And what Claremont did to that title was criminal. Marvel made devil of a blunder allowing him anywhere near the eXiles. Jeff Parker series had me hopeful but it was cancelled before it could really get going. Thanks for taking me down memory lane to a time I got back into comics. I hope Marvel gives us an Omnibus of this run, even issues #90-#100 included.

Exiles was such a interesting series and tons of fun an honestly part of me would've actually really loved for marvel to make another team of exiles that stars yes some members of the original team again but also adding new members like Mayday parker Spider-girl the daughter of Peter parker and mary jane a version of X-23 aka laura kenny as wolverine Nightcrawler Daughter yes blink and finally bring back morph again also adding American dream from mc2 universe would be freaking fantastic and tons of fun at least in my opinion, however knowing marvel comics these days I don't see them ever doing that sadly. Which is just sad in my opinion because exiles unlike the web warriors which failed badly was a far better concept and a well executed team book that was ten times better then the web warriors ever did in there entire series from start to finish at least in my opinion but that's just me and my thoughts on this team as a whole.

The original reviews had such an impact on me… I might have… kinda sorta… written a 350 page fan novel inspired by it, using the “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” characters. And then I went and wrote sequels to it… And I gave Daisy a sister from another timeline long before the show did. (Though in my case, adopting her variant as her twin sister)

Most of these stories have no point and they are money grabs and they just put a bunch of crap together.... as you said it started out real good as many stories do but eventially they just becomes a list of nouns they need or want to cover.

I remember reading Exiles when it was ongoing, but while I still remember details of the first couple writers' runs, I didn't remember a single thing about Claremont's time on this book until watching this retrospective. I think that says something. Also, after watching this retrospective, I remember how annoyed I was at the book for sidelining Nocturne with a stroke. Because it was the exact same thing that had happened to Jolt in Thunderbolts.

Connor Goldsmith's podcast Cerebro is super helpful with explaining X-Men lore if you're at all interested. I especially recommend the episodes on Nathaniel Essex and Victor Creed because the guests had a lot of wonderful insight.

Interesting to see the origin of this title. Now, in the Krakoa era, the Exiles is the name of a team of former inmates in the pit of Krakoa made to retrieve and recapture Sabretooth. It has recent breakout stars like Nanny and Orphanmaker from the Hellions run. It also has 2010’s character Oya and, surprisingly one of the breakout stars of the book, Nekra. Gotta be honest, considering her origins with the Mandrill, I do love what writers have been doing with her.

Hey, Linkara. I know this retrospective is old, so I don't know if you have read it by now, but I think the original run of Excalibur by Claremont and Davis would be right up your alley. It always seemed to me the spiritual antecessor to Exiles. I also think part of the direction Claremont took the book seens to be a reaction to the fact that there was no need for the bugs or Timekeeper for he developed in Excalibur the concept of Omniverse and its Guardians - which plays the same part as those entities in Exiles - from Alan Moore's run in Captain Britain. It puts his run in more context. And it's incredibly fun.

Sadly a few once acclaimed writers just weren't able to adjust dialogue and writing in the new millennium. Claremont, Lobdell, DeFalco, especially Dematteis. When Scott Lobdell was given Teen tians in the New 52 it was a 2012 comic with 1994 level over written dialogue. Not everything needs to be a novel in 22 pages. But as they say, "no quarter given, no quarter asked". The only notable writer I believe edited for the times was Fabian Nicieza.
