44:30 The Anti-Monitor being destroyed by Golden Age Superman himself is one of the most EPIC moments in comic-book history. The first hero ever stopping by his own hand the threat that wanted to destroy everything that came after him. How poetic

It especially is poignant when you keep in mind that according to DC canon at the time, that Superman was the very same one that first appeared on Action Comics #1 (1938). He was the first superhero. The one that kickstarted the superhero genre in the US.

So, Final Crisis has the villain create special helmets that brainwashes people and turns them into mindless worshipping consumers, which is ultimately stopped by the hero singing a song to stop the big bad. Final Crisis has the same plot as the SpongeBob movie.

This probably seems random, but your comment made me realize KZbin technically has two “metas”. KZbin themselves favors short-form content and has tweaked their algorithm to prioritize this in a foolish attempt to compete with TikTok. Meanwhile, us viewers prefer long-form content, a preference creators like Linkara have adapted to by creating these hours long compilations of their older, shorter videos.

Y’know, rewatching this I actually disagree with Lewis on the ending to Infinite Crisis. I think letting Superboy Prime have the last word is a very pointed choice, conveying the idea that toxic nostalgia never really dies. It can only be mitigated, and you have to be vigilant and aware of its presence so it doesn’t rear its ugly head again.

As one who really isnt into DC too much, all these Crisis events as outlined here are really fascinating with their scope, gravity, and sheer utter craziness with all that happens. And its both amusing and sad to constantly try and see them one up themselves in the modern era with all these other crisis stuff and trying to delve more into folks like the anti monitor. Of the three, Infinite would be the one I have the most appreciation for because of all of its thematic approaches and scope and tying of loose ends, even if its massively flawed and needlessly cruel. Its first cover with the DC trinity and their secondaries is also one of my favorite comic covers of all time.

*Fun fact:* There's actually a pretty cool novelization of the first Crisis, written also by Marv Wolfman, which is narrated by the spirit of Barry. 25% of Barry's narration consists in pop-culture references, other 25% in praising the s*x appeal of the female protagonists, other 25% in expressing how much he loves Iris and the last 25% in actually telling the main story. Jokes aside, he epilogue in which Barry's spirit ends up in the future, sees an elderly Iris advising their grandson Bart (who inherited his grandfather's super speed), and realizes his time has finally ended and must now go to Heaven is just heartbreaking. There's even a full-cast audiobook adaptation of the novel that I totally reccomend, by the way!

Ah, back when I loved getting new comics, every Wednesday. All these events (minus Final Crisis) came along at a time when I would literally look forward to new comic book day, and get down to my local shop, as soon as possible. I didn't have a pull list, until later on, because I always got in, early. DC was just a fun universe to visit, and during events, there was an excitement, to seeing the next issue, even the tie in. I remember in the Batman tie ins, to Crisis on Infinite Earths, everyone from Gordon and Bullock, to Catwoman remarked about the red skies and the storms. It was just cool. I subsist on back issues, now. Still love the DC Universe, and it's fun to go back. Hey, Linkara, in the event that you see this comment, I hope one day, we can get you to review Millennium and Invasion. Both were weird events, but fun to go back and read, all this time later.

I still think Batman Beyond did the best "Bruce breaks his gun taboo" moment. Where an elderly Bruce Wayne trying to keep up with being Batman finds himself crippled by his own aging body. And in order to save someone else, likely having accepted his own death under the cowl long ago, he took up a nearby gun. And it was the event that got him to stop being Batman. "Never again". After a long life, after all that training, the technology involved in the new suit, etc. He hit his limit. And realized what he'd have to do to keep up. And that he was no longer worthy of it. As opposed to Final Crisis where he kind of quips about making an exception and is 100% fine with it.

CW's version was so disrespectful, to the DCU. The restrictions they had, in the Smallville days, was gone, for the most part, meaning they could've easily paid respect to the Batman. Wonder Woman, maybe not, but the whole thing was even worse than I thought it'd be, given their quality, up to that point. The whole assembly was there to prop up "Supergirl" (who didn't die, for some reason) and Batwoman , who was suddenly way better than Batman. The only saving graces were the Supermen, and Arrow, until they killed him. Film and TV Flashes meeting up was cool, too. Outside of that, it was another middle finger, from Berlanti and co. Sorry, had to rant.

The Final Crisis review reminds me of how awful that Rubik's Cube symbolism is. I did a lengthy breakdown of it on the original review, but to tl;dr - no, the "number of god" is the MAXIMUM number of moves that it would take to solve any Rubik's Cube configuration, not the minimum, and even the original research paper that was likely cited for the number the comic gives notes that it was a median, some cubes took less and some took more. And it's obvious that saying "no one can solve a less cube in less than 18 moves" is bullcrap - take a solved cube, move it 5 times, and there, you can solve it in only 5 moves.

Honestly for me out of all the crisis events that DC has done over the years my favorite Crisis has to be well the original that start it all Crisis on infinite earths, mostly because out of all them that one was the most easiest one to understand an the story itself with the heroes and villain's teaming up to fight the anti-monitor was freaking awesome and badass, and plus that crisis actually had stakes to it where characters who actually died like Barry Allen flash and supergirl kara zor el who die in this crisis stayed dead for a very long time which actually worked in my opinion and was a fantastic idea and it opened the door for new characters to take there place like Wally west who was my flash for 25 years which I approve at least in my opinion, but that being said though the aftermath of crisis wasn't perfect and it did had many flaws especially with putting the history together for this new universe but despite that setback the original crisis on infinite earths is an all time classic that I will never ever forget at least in my opinion.

My biggest issue with Infinite Crisis is how it treats Golden Age Superman. There is no way he would be okay with wiping out an entire universe just to bring back his own world. I'm okay with him being tempted but Superman would never do that, especially when he is the representation of what Superman truly is. And his death was not done well either. Personally, I would have had him die being the one to take down the tower before it could merge the two worlds, as opposed to Connor. While Connor would be the one to take down Superboy Prime.

To my mind these three crisis are a clear example of diminishing returns. The first is great the following ones keep getting more messy and the final one doesn't even bother to organize into being coherent because is so full of itself that doesn't feel it needs to. The sad legacy of the first crisis is setting up the reboot button to be used over and over again at DC turning more and more complicated to new readers. At some point it makes me think they shouldn't have finished the multiverse in 86. They should have done the same thing they did with the previous generations of superheroes, just move the older ones to a new earth. Superman of the 40s was on Earth 2 already, Superman from the Silver Age on Earth 1 just do Earth 0 with Bronze Age heroes and maybe set every 20 years there is a new Earth so they don't need to handle issues with the sliding timeline. The old stories would still be there and you'd also get the younger versions in a way less complicated way. Then every few years you could do a crossover. What I mean is, the formula they were using in the 70s was working and was less convoluted than what they ended up doing.

lmao, Final Crisis, it's amusing you mentioned Obama, because that was 2008..... and as it was released, comic fans were more into the Dark Knight movie! And even then, if I'm not mistaken, Grant Morrison was doing Batman RIP, and also All Star Superman was going and then later we would hear his Virgin comics stuff. So yeah Morrison was stretching himself thin, than how much we all go "Oh wow, we love JLA in the late 90s, wish we had more of that."

I used to contribute to a message/discussion board which had a sub board for comic books. The people there HATED COIE and Marv Wolfman, it's creator. They said he was a hack and that the series had created too many problems for the DC Multiverse. They added that decades later, DC was still trying to clean up the mess that COIE had made. And one guy, he was really outspoken about his hatred of the series and the idea of the Crisis in general. And not only did he hate COIE, he also hated the 1986 "The Man Of Steel" miniseries written by John Byrne. The guy said that "Byrne got his claws on Superman and wiped out everything I knew". He was also the one who informed me of DC Comic's penchant for "ret-conning their continuity every time you turn around". Because I was a newcomer to DC at the time (the late 2000's), I had been a Marvel fan for a while beforehand and was just then getting into reading titles from DC. So I had no idea that DC did that. I also become aware of the famous line by the late Mark Gruenwald: "Marvel doesn't need to ret-con it's characters - they got them right the first time"! Of course, by the mid-2010's Marvel did indeed do a fairly major ret-con of their continuity, but not to the extent that DC does every decade or so. They combined the Ultimate Universe with the mainstream 616 Universe and introduced the "All-New, All-Different Marvel". That's right, a ret-con, something they had never done before. Isn't that something! Anyway, thanks for putting all these reviews in one video, Linkara.

3:19:52 I thought Zero Hour was an okay event, but the two-page spread of the DC timeline showing superheroes since Superman’s public debut being active since for ten years is a mindscrew for the readers. In my headcanon, it would make sense that all the heroes since Superman’s public debut would be active for 23 years (or 35 years since Superman started as the original Superboy at eight years old) since Superman graduated from Superboy at 20 years old, making the JSA in their seventies, the JLA in their late-thirties or early-forties, the Titans and Infinity Inc. in their mid-twenties or early-thirties, and Young Justice be in their early or mid-teens. At least that would make sense timeline and continuity wise. Also, in my headcanon, Barry Allen’s debut as the Flash would happen five years after Superman’s debut, the JLA would form seven years after Superman’s debut, Flash of Two Worlds would happen nine years after Superman’s debut, the first JLA/JSA teamup would happen and the Titans would form as the Teen Titans ten years after Superman’s debut, the New Teen Titans and the Outsiders and Infinity Inc. would form fifteen years after Superman’s debut, the first Crisis would happen 17 years after Superman’s pubic debut, Legends would happen a year after the first Crisis, Millennium would happen two years after the first Crisis, Invasion would happen three years after the first Crisis, the JSA would return and the Death of Superman would happen five years after the first Crisis, and Zero Hour would happen six years after the first Crisis. That way, it would make a lot of sense to the readers.

A couple of very minor, very nerdy nitpicks about one particular scene: - While God's number (the minimum number of moves you need to be allowed in order to guarantee being able to solve Rubik's Cube from any position if you can follow a shortest possible solution path) was only proven to be 20 in 2010, a few years after Final Crisis was written, that it had to be at least 20 was proven in 1995. As an aside, that does only apply under the standard half-turn metric, where you can twist a single face through any angle as a single move - under the quarter turn metric, where you can only turn a single face through a quarter turn for each move, God's number has been proven to be 26. - Despite God's number having been proven to be at least 20 a decade before Final Crisis was published, making claiming it to be 18 a sign of misunderstanding reality on a level similar to claiming that the direction to which the word "up" usually refers in English is the direction objects heavier than the fluid in which they're immersed move in when released. Despite that, it's only the minimum number of moves required for a worst-case arrangement of Rubik's Cube. If you take a randomised cube (or take a random possible position from among the many possible positions to be your target state) then, while it's likely to require close to 20 moves to solve it (following the shortest path), and it's very unlikely to be in a state that only requires a few moves to solve, it's entirely possible for it to be in a state that can be solved in only 19 moves, or 18, or 17, or fewer. I have a Rubik's Cube on my desk right now that I can solve in 0 moves. I just did it again. And again. That doesn't make me smarter than Metron; it just means that I picked up an already-solved cube and didn't do anything to mess it up before "solving" it. Solving a randomised cube in fewer than 20 moves, while it does mean you're very smart, or have dedicated far too much of your life to studying Rubik's cubes (probably both), doesn't mean you've "beaten" God's number; it just means that your random starting point wasn't one of the hardest ones to solve. The scene doesn't show off how clever Metron is (well, okay, managing a theoretically optimal solve of any cube configuration more than a few moves out from solved is actaully pretty impressive - but it's something that, at least with the right writer, many of DC's "intelligent" characters could do) so much as showing off how ignorant the writers are about mathematics and logic.

As to the last point, I suspect that Grant Morrison DOES get it, the problem is that Grant tends to write stuff with as minimal information as is necessary and consequently much more complex stuff like God's number just does not translate well into a succinct explanation and instead just comes across as "Umm, anyone can solve a rubik's cube in 18 moves if they only made 18 moves away from it being solved."

3:30:53 If I were DC, there would be two versions of Hawkman and Hawkgirl that coexisted in the Pre-Flashpoint continuity without any reboots or retcons that changed both characters. For example, the Golden Age Hawkman would debut in October 1939 and join the JSA in 1940 and the Golden Age Hawkgirl would debut in June 1941 and join the All-Star Squadron in 1941, while the Silver Age Hawkman and Hawkgirl (later renamed and rebranded as Hawkwoman) arrived from Thanagar to Earth and made their debut in 1961 (or 34 years before Dawn of DC) and joined the JLA 13 years in real-time (or five years in sliding time) apart. Everything would be like it is or was Pre-Crisis and Pre-Flashpoint without any continuity errors, while Hawkworld would either be a Post-Crisis retelling of the Silver Age Hawkman and Hawkgirl set in the past or would be an Elseworlds story. That is how I will set the continuity straight for the Golden and Silver Age Hawkman and Hawkgirl.

"Nor do you have enough of an attention span to bring up every single thing happening in it." You underestimate my power, Linkara. With the way my brain works I ABSOLUTELY have enough to do this! I can turn myself into a nerdy version of Douchey McNitpick if I so choose...minus the douchbaggery

Yeah I still remember when this came out; nearly each issue was one of the coolest I'd ever seen and the series on a whole also one of my favorites...and maybe the one I dislike the most (it having wiped out MY DC and lead to me leaving comics). So many awesome cameos and interactions and never seen team-ups. And such wonderful art; as great as Kirby was Perez was the main man for crowds. I wish they'd shown the new Earth and let us see all of the drama of so many getting used to the new status quo, even if just for a few more months instead of that chaotic uneven shift over that we got with some series suddenly rebooting while others showed no change. The biggest shame is that there were still so many Pre-Crisis stories to be told, begged for team-ups to do and long asked questions that never got answered. Also, gotta say, I like the coloring of the original issues better than the scans.

That theory about the Anti-Monitor coming back in Infinite Crisis could also work as being the thing that gets the heroes to trust each other again and defeat the same villain that they've fought before once and for all. Hell, it could even turn out that it was all part of the Anti-Monitor's plan to break the heroes apart so he could win this time. There could even be a parallel to how the Monitor has been watching the heroes all across the multiverse with the Anti-Monitor doing the same ever since his initial defeat, but he's slowly pulling the strings for events like Identity Crisis and other stories so he could break everyone apart, take over the universe and get his revenge. It could fit with Infinite Crisis' darker tone and make the Anti-Monitor an even darker threat than he already was in Crisis On Infinite Earths by him using psychological warfare.

I might be mixing up canon, fanon and retcons. I was under the impression that the New Gods of Apokolips and New Genesis were at least God-adjacent. Being empowered by a fragment of the Source, and being 'Gods' of the Source Word they have. Darkseid, New God of Tyranny. Mister Miracle (Scott Free), New God of Freedom. Grayven, New God of Conquest. Not receiving power from Worship/belief as the Old Gods, but empowered by fundamental concept.

Maybe it’s just me but… what exactly was so dumb about Kyle Rainer’s plan? I guess it’s because I’ve never read the book itself, but I don’t get why damaging Alex Luthor’s hand and stopping him from smushing the earths together over and over was so dumb, sure I don’t get how in the world they knew to do that but still

It's that it's not really a plan at all and he starts formulating it before anything major happens. And they keep saying in these scenes "Kyle Rayner's got a plan!" and then the plan is just "Shoot the finger."

I disagree that Alan Scott and Jay Garrick are way OOC here. Consider they just saw their close friends (Dr. Mid-Nite and Hourman) literally aged to death. And others: Johnny Thunder, Starman, Johnny Quick, Atom and Sandman turned to their true age with all of the problems that come with it. Plus Dr. Fate was ripped into two and left as an old couple. Jay wasn't spared by the age blast either. That couldn't have been more than a few minutes ago. Yeah, there is some major emotional trauma going on there. I am not surprised they took themselves off the board to be with the few remaining friends they had. Remember the JSA is about family and legacy.

The Anti-Monitor is truly one of the most powerful villains in all of the DC Multiverse. He wanted to destroy all positive matter universes so that only the anti-matter universe would remain. Thankfully that was prevented, but at the end of the original Crisis, only one primary DC universe remained, with the survivors of the alternate universes that had been destroyed being sent to a "paradise dimension". Holy shit!

One of those massive tuning forks eventually appeared in the Marvel Universe, in the clutches of none other than GALACTUS! …. But, he called it his “Cosmic Pleasure Rod”. It’s only ever appeared in a couple of panels as it was mostly stored in the epic depths of his GALACTUSH‼️
