Notice how the dining table slightly turns into their bed back in the "real world" with the red sheet when Jude Law slams his head on the table whilst pausing.

This is the most underrated movie of all time. To this day it boggles my mind how few people have seen it.

I remember being really impressed with the "special effects" when his head sinks into the table, but now I realise that for that shot, they simply switched the table for the bed they went to sleep on

I love the fact that they actually made a table in the shape of a bed just for that one shot.

I am pretty sure this works IRL but I’ve forgotten the name of the game we are all playing so I can’t pause and get back to reality. It just keeps going.

From memory of watching this years ago, this is what I thought the point of the film was - she really did make the original game, but they stuck her inside her own game in order to try to trick her into thinking she was just trying someone elses game (TrancendenZ), in order to sort of steal her game from her and keep it for themselves, so they could sell it etc instead.

when they question if its real or not, that's realism and thats what makes the games great, because its so real.

It's a great comment on hyperreality, but it also sort of gives away the supposedly "real" world's equal artifice. The two-headed dragon, the characters' names, Willem Dafoe's character just being called "Gas" as he's a gas station attendant... I know that names like "Kiri Vinokur" and "Yevgeny Nurish" are technically linguistically correct if you look past more common English naming conventions - but they feel inescapably fake, somehow. Even names like "Hugo Carlaw" and "Darcy Nader" feel off, even if they make perfect sense. You could conceivably bump into a Hugo Carlaw or a Darcy Nader on the street. It's kind of surprising that you only need a few levels for a supposedly hyper-real game to abandon all naming efforts for certain characters and letting Ted Pikul's "Chinese waiter" pass. Even basic MUDs and text-based adventures tended to provide concrete names for entities you could interact with in some limited fashion. Then again, that's where David Cronenberg and the Wachowskis kind of diverge. One was mostly focusing on dissassociative effects and presented its concept in an unwaveringly negative light, while the others used disassociation to express a form of self-actualization, which obviously ties into the recent admission that "The Matrix" can serve as a "trans" allegory - as in both Transhuman and Transsexual. I guess this makes eXistenZ a kind of Boomer allegory for the usual cries of how the "vidyas are rotting the kids' brains"...
