Hello Exit Sign 250, I have a question for you. I have a Faraday bell. I'm going to get a 120 v to 24 v so I can run the bell on my panel however. I'm wondering if its polarized because I have no idea and don't want to toast my panel. The Bell Has a video of it on my Channel. Please let me know If you have the knowlege.
@ExitSign2504 жыл бұрын
I’ll try to answer as best as I can, but there’s some details I need to know. Is the bell run off 120VAC? Or are you saying your panel’s NAC outputs 120VAC? The way you worded it sounds like the panel outputs 120V and your bell runs on 24V. Is that correct?
@FireAlarm334 жыл бұрын
ExitSign250 The bell runs on 120v. My panel doesn’t do that so I’m think of getting a 120v to 24v converter. What I am asking is do you think it’s polarized?
@ExitSign2504 жыл бұрын
That doesn’t exist. You can’t make 24VDC go to 120VAC in a small converter. And at that point a polarized or non polarized connection wouldn’t matter. What you need to do is get a 24VDC relay with a 120VAC rated contact. Then you simply wire the bell to the relay like a switch, then when the panel activates and powers the NAC the relay will close and the bell will sound.
@FireAlarm334 жыл бұрын
ExitSign250 So your basically saying it’s polarized. Thank you for your help! Sorry if I was annoying.
@ExitSign2504 жыл бұрын
I’m not saying that. The bell is non polarized since it runs off of AC power. But it really doesn’t matter since you cannot run it off of your panel without a relay...

Nice units! I have a question. Is it normal to have to reset an ms5ud to clear an ann bus open circuit trouble? Thanks
@ExitSign2504 жыл бұрын
Thanks. An ANN bus circuit trouble is for the annunciator. That means the panel can’t communicate to the annunciator. If you have an annunciator installed, check the wiring. If not you’ll need to disable the ANN bus to stop getting the trouble.
@calebmorand46044 жыл бұрын
@@ExitSign250 I have an ann-80 installed. Everything is correct and fine. when I remove the terminal block it goes into ann bus trouble and it has to be reset to clear the trouble. Just wondering if that's normal.
@ExitSign2504 жыл бұрын
There’s your answer. I assume you are talking about the ANN bus terminal block. When you remove it, it becomes disconnected from the panel so they have lost communication with each other thus the trouble. That should be self explanatory. There isn’t problem with the panel since that’s how it was programmed to respond. If you leave the terminal block unplugged and reset the panel to “clear the trouble” the trouble condition should return.
@calebmorand46044 жыл бұрын
@@ExitSign250 awesome. Even when I plug back in the terminal block, the trouble stays but no longer says Ann bus fault "all devices" it just says ann bus fault until the system is reset. Then it goes back to normal. I know nothing is wrong with the system. It works fine but I was curious to why that was.
@calebmorand46044 жыл бұрын
@@ExitSign250 also one more thing. Is it normal for the system to say "Ann bus fault unlocked ann-80" when the annunciator is unlocked for a few minutes? It does this even if I press buttons on the annunciator. Thank you.

Hey Exitsign250, do some emergency lights/combos have a feature so they turn on during a fire alarm condition? :)
@ExitSign2504 жыл бұрын
That would be a very cool feature. It might even make emergency lighting more effective. The closet thing we have is “Fire Alarm Feature” on some exit signs where when the fire alarm system activates the exit signs will flash. This can gain attention of occupants to guide them to the closest exit.
@fst17754 жыл бұрын
I Definitely agree with you! That’s very true it would be good in places that are dimly lit such as at night or movie theatres or dorms this makes it able to see easier and to get out.
@ExitSign2504 жыл бұрын
Plus, there may be thick smoke but the power is still on. Emergency lights (at least good quality, brand name ones) are designed to cut through smoke to illuminate the path. Normal light fixtures might not be able to provide enough light for people to get out. I hope codes are changed one day to require or recommend this feature.

There was one of these older signs for sale on 1stdibs.com the beginning of last month. It was made by Prescolite ( a division of Hubbell), and it was green. It was also new old stock! i personally prefer the incandescent ones as even though you have to change the lights in them, they last a lot longer just for that reason. in the LED ones, once they go out, that's it, game over for the whole unit and not just the lights. that's why i personally don't get it at all why everyone seems to think that LEDs are the future. to me, it shows how we've become accustomed with just tossing items out and them just landing up in a landfill and all that. i personally think that the older ones were better and the newer ones are cheaply made generic or not but that's just me. it seems to me that the fact that the older ones like the ones that were literally just light bulbs and those from the 60's were the best built in some ways in terms of longevity. i'm not sure if the newer ones only last about 10 years or so, or if it's regulation that you toss them out after 10 years or so. does anyone know what the answer is to that? been wondering about it for a long time now.
@ExitSign2504 жыл бұрын
LED is certainly the future. From energy costs, longer life, and little to no heat. LEDs are much more efficient compared to Incandescent. Depending on the brand and quality, a typical LED exit signs will last 10 - 20 years. Maybe even more. LEDs are constantly evolving. Original LED technology seemed to get dimmer and fail quickly. Modern LED’s tend to not have that problem. I’ve seen (and own) LED exit signs from the 90’s that have been in service for quite some time that continue to operate and put out the same amount of light it originally did when installed. That’s about 30 years! And to answer your question, exit signs aren’t required to be replaced every ten years. It must be replaced only if it cannot operate properly.
@tanyasobsessions21314 жыл бұрын
@@ExitSign250 if the incandescence ones can be replaced and made better in theory by installing an LED bulb, and not using old incandescent bulbs wouldn't that in theory make them better because when those bulbs eventually go, you don't have to toss the whole unit, just the bulb? i think what i'm asking is do those very tiny LED lights inside last longer then those using an LED bulb in the older ones? hope that makes sense. that's what i've wondered for a very long time now. They are both LED technology so that's where the confusion lies with me.
@ExitSign2504 жыл бұрын
Well, you answered your own question. Both are LED so they, in theory, should last the same time. As with the replacement goes, many light bulb manufacturers offer an LED retrofit for incandescent exit signs so you can just insert them in without replacing the whole unit. LED retrofits have been around a long time for exit signs. Then newer exit signs already have the LED board on the inside, so no need to make sockets for them.

Interesting. Most people have no idea what you’re testing an exit sign or emergency light. For all they know, you’re trying to tamper. Some assume they are somehow tied into the fire alarm system for some reason. I’ve heard others say it calls the police when you press the button. The logic doesn’t make sense.
