Exo car builds are some of the coolest supercar-slaying street racers to rise from the underground car scene. These semi-legal lightweight performance projects cost next to nothing, but boast insane power-to-weight ratios that can rival million dollar exotics. If you're looking for a cheap supercar or best first track car to beat Ferraris with, then exoskeleton cars like the Ariel Atom, Exomotive Exocet, or krowrx xtegra could be the answer.

I think the real danger with amateur-made exo cars is the lack of understanding when it comes to proper space frame design, specifically in terms of crash safety. Some of those frames really didn't look like they'd hold up in any sort of impact, especially side-impacts.

Totally agree, the lack of triangulation is scary in some. It's not just a question of being safe, chassis rigidity effects handling. I appreciate people are chasing light weight but unless you really know what you're doing then it's better to be a little bit heavier than risk catastrophic failure. There's plenty of professionally designed vehicles to give you a good idea of what's required.

If anyone watching this decides to actually try to build one of these for the love of whoever you pray to DO NOT USE ALUMINUM TUBING! Yeah it'll be extremely light weight but if you have any kind of accident over 30mph you will probably die. Colin Chapman, I restored a boat he designed many years ago (I think in the70's I think) the designed 2 very expensive boats, the one I used to own was the top of the range "Marauder", it was a 47' boat (+- 13-14 meter) and the hull was designed to ride out of the water at speeds and it was tested doing 56 knots with the right power pack. We gave it 2 X 590 Hp, Cummins Diesels with a set of Arneston surface piercers. At the time the Spanish and Italian Navies had the high speed interceptors that was the fastest in the Mediterranean but I was guaranteed there will be very view boats that would outrun the Maruader over 1200 Miles, +- 2000 Km, and by then the Maruader would have cleared the Strait of Gibraltar well in open water and next refuel Casablanca and then off to Tenerife, GONE!. Our tanks carried 4000 Lt. What a beautiful machine, Colin Designed the boat for a market 30 years into the future, He also designed the Lotus as a racing team. One last thing about the Marauder, the hull design and built was very futuristic at the time, Vacuum injection fiber glass, honey comb and another fibre glass inner liner, about 40mm thick, so a crack had to go through the outer layer, through the honey comb center and fiber glass inner, so extremely tough but light and could take a massive blow before it needs repairs. We sold the boat to a person in the UK before emigrating to Australia 15 years ago, we have lost contact with the new owner. If he reads this, please reply as far as we know that is the only Maruader left in the UK, there was a Guy who had the plugs for both the hull and the top.

Some of us have ridden motorcycles in all weather -- I did two years as a courier in Seattle, and only missed one day for weather because there was glare ice on my street and I figured the chances of getting the bike out without smashing anything were near zero -- but don't like the weather going up our sleeves and down our necks. Seems like one of these with a roof panel and windshield left intact might solve much of the issue with weather, gain a smidgen on aerodynamics, and potentially be more fun to drive. I'd accept a hundred pounds of weight penalty to keep the rain off. This look like they have the potential to perform like a T-Rex and cost half as much. ;)

My neighbor built a exo build out of a Nissan 350z. He's pushing about 600hp and does 1/4 miles in high 10s and low 11s all day consistently. But he constantly has to make slight modifications before and after races due to the frame itself not being sturdy and strong enough to hold up parts for long extended periods of time. And this is common amongst exo builds because most of everything his held by welds or 3d printed adapters customed for certain parts. But the fastest run I've seen him go was at 156.

The only problem with those "madmax" type of cars (bc i would loooove to make me one, since i'm a mechanic) iiiss that it is illegal in my country (France) ... Yup, you've read this right, modifying the chassis , frame, or removing the body (like doors, hood, trunk lid, etc) makes your car not street legal anymore and not covered by any insurances (Because it modifies the safety mesures like deformation properties of the car in case of an impact for example)

When I was a kid (1960's) Gymkhana was a big thing. Parking lot racing. "Track cars" were the norm. Everything from VW to corvette based. Think go karts with big engines :) And most of them were not registered for road use. Not many had any lights at all. Some didn't even have a generator/alternator, just a light weight battery (and some of those were only 6V).

The newest ND2 (2019+ / N/A 181hp / 7500 RPM Redline) Miata's are actually pretty quick, 0-60mph in 5.6 seconds and feels quicker with the low center of gravity and curb weight of just 2340lbs. Sure plenty of quicker cars out there but IMO it's much more fun to actually be able to run the car through the gears without breaking every posted limit before your out of 2nd gear, etc.

@@leoyru.3361 that's just nonsense. For a one off vehicle you need to show that it has breaks, the correct lights and adheres to applicable pollution legislation. The frames testing itself is basically up to the engineer doing the certification. I actually did this once and the only expensive part was the electromagnetic testing (since I was building an EV) which ran me above 2000€. The rest was done with less than 500€. Using off the shelf parts from street legal vehicles you could even get well below those 500.

When you’re so shot that you didn’t realize that they’ve been racing tubular chassis cars in nascar since the 1960s and people just started building them for the street, these would be even faster if they had any form of aerodynamics like a fiberglass shell instead of a bare chassis with a million little holes to catch the wind and add resistance

Don't forget about aero, especially if you want to go with higher road speeds. Go for something similar to the ariel atom. Put aero around non-aerodynamic areas while maintaining airflow through already air flowing areas. the miata is already a light car, I was looking for one a while back with a simple dream, swapping the engine and drivetrain for something more spicy. I had in my possession at the time a 1998 Saab 900 SE (engine B204r), then there's a company that makes a bellhousing adapter so you can mate your Saab H engine (B204 B234 B205 B235 B206) to a BorgWarner T5 (not exactly a hard to find transmission). That alone would have made such a fun car, +60 hp on a miata without modifying the Saab engine, but ya know if you're gonna swap the engine to a different car you might as well take some extra steps. Like giving that engine more room to breathe because at least according to the forums there's a lot you can gain without actually having to modify internals (iron block, chain driven, forged crank and rods, with sprayers cooling the pistons all by default), better forced induction than the teeny tiny stock turbo, and of course some computer optimization. It would have been absolutely sick.
