Exo-Terra Terrarium Review | An extensive look at the pro's and con's

I need the 36 x 18 x 18 for my Hog Island boa, but no one is reviewing this model. I have 2 tanks, both glass aquariums - all you have to do to modify the screen tops is use ALUMINUM HEAT TAPE, just put it over 3/4 of the mesh top to insure that you are then able to maintain the Heat and the Humidity that you need. It works.

Hello from Ontario Canada. Great video. Agree with all your pros and cons. Especially needing more sizes reflecting expanding information on what our animals needs are. I have geckos and have all exo terra. But a 30 inch x 18 x 30 and up makes more sense for arboreal geckos to be able to move more latterly as well as horizontal. Also for housing the terrariums in stand set ups. Thank you for your video.

These would be great if they didnt have those ridiculous cross bars on the top. Limits the size and location of a ceramic heat emitter. Why can they not make them with just a normal mesh screen on top🤦‍♂️

This is perfect for a Leopard Gecko imo... The 36/18/12.. You don't need more than 12inches in height and the length is actually a bonus for them since most people keep them in 24s and the 18 is also a treat for them. I got $100 off of mine which was 33% off on sale. Couldn't be happier

I have my baby leopard gecko in the 36/18/18 and he uses ALL of that height! He climbs around like crazy, all the way up to the screen and all along the top of the background so in my opinion the bigger the better for leopard geckos!!!

Great video but I was hoping you would cover something that I can’t find anywhere….😫 could you please please let me know how to clean the front vent?? They look like they could possibly pop off to clean the inside of it. I have a crested gecko and he wee’s down his glass and I think it’s building up in the front vent by the doors….I need to clean it but I don’t know how and I don’t want to break it. Please can you let me know if you have any idea on how to clean the vent. Thank you🦎😊

I’ve seen people build structures for their terrarium using styrofoam covered in sanded grout and then sealed... since the background on the Exo Terras are just styrofoam couldn’t you do the same thing with it? Just coat it in layers of sanded grout and then seal it to keep insects from burrowing into it?

Sure can! I looked at ut from the "why pay if you need to adjust it anyway" standpoint. But many use the background as a base to build upon.

It is made from a very solid perspex like material. Eventually water will creep in but it wont soak of water like cork or many other materials

The backgrounds are weird for these. I had a gecko and when feeding it mealworms, if they escape, they will burrow in the foam and nest there.

Good add. Insects like mealworms can do great damage to the backwalls for sure. Another reason to take them out.

It's true, I was thinking the same thing about the 20x20x20 Exo terra, it's just so small, and I have one and cant use it for any reptile.

Hello, Thanks for this really awesome information video for the Exo-Terrarium. Your first con I think sealed the deal. I want one. I was thinking about using the tank for a Hamster Habitat. I love it's design. The high bottom, double opening doors, and the screened-in roof is an added plus. It is constructed in the style of the cage I built for my hamster but definitely more secure, my DYI doesn't have locks like that on the doors ;~ )). You said "pro" yes ventilation. Ventilation IS very important for the hamster I want to house inside. I was worried that the tank would hold to much humidity. BUT then you brightened my day!! You said it was also a "con" because the heat escapes. That means the airflow in the design will keep my hamsters in the way of fresh air. Now I'm glad Ikea has been closed. Surfing the web I found the habitat of my very own design and with all the little insecurities and things having been worked out. And you, YOU were the man who answered all my questions but one. Just how deep is the bottom of the Exo-Terra Terrarium 36x18x18hight? All but that one you answered all my questions and concerns. Thanks

With hamsters you must use lots of bedding for them to burrow in, however the Exo Terra tanks don’t really have much space to put the substrate without it falling out. The completely closed of part is not deep enough for hamsters.

I wish I could help. But i always just use a fine brush and spray some natural vinegar in there. I have clicked them apart after taking the windows out. But non of that will improve the structure of your setup and would not advice haha

I clean my tank vents with hose outside spray water in there and go inside spray water out threw vents and in .Be careful when you wash tank so doors don't open they will break the hinges and crack Glass very easy

I sadly had a heating pad malfunction and it destroyed the bottom panel of my exo-terra. I bought a new one online and it showed up completely shattered in the box. I just have bad luck I suppose.

They're beautiful cages, and your set ups are gorgeous. My biggest gripe with these cages is I wish the manufacturer offered a factory-made solid lid modification. It hurts to spend the money on these cages then pay even more money to modify the lids so they're more suitable for the inhabitants.

They are easy to open. Exoterra does sell actual combination locks for their enclosures to keep the doors closed.
