The novel is based on the IP. The IP is not based on the novel. The two novels take place after the game. Peter F Hamilton is the writer of the books and helped develop the sci-fi world of exodus.

The guy who is "staring at a box" is typing or doing something with his left hand if you look closely. Seems like bad AI at first but when you realize he's interacting with whatever the box is, it makes sense.
