Type of wood and diameter make huge difference. If you try and burn and don’t get good results you have kinda made stump rot proof. If you are in no rush make composite pile over the stump. The heat and dampness help decomposition speed up.

I typically love to do this on a nice hot dry drought kind of a day with a chilled bottle of Jack Daniels in my hand. Especially with dry straw or other wood near by and I typically leave my gas can right beside it just incase I need more fuel on the fire. I won’t have to walk as far to get it to get anything. I had a big willow tree uproot in the front yard this past fall. Cut it all up and stacked everything on top of the stump. When winter arrived and there was snow on the ground, burnt everything up nicely. Added topsoil over the burnt out hole in the spring, seeded and mulched. Now you can't even tell that a tree was ever there.

Where I live now "clean air" regulations prohibit burning garden prunings, including such as stumps etc. However an exemption applies for Barbecues, Hangi, outdoor Pizza ovens, and other small fires where food is being cooked. If I needed to burn out a stump like yours I'd set up a couple of chairs outside with some toasting forks, and a few sausages, with a pan I can put on the fire. Perhaps if possible use a piece of old metal drum to surround the stump with a metal grille over the top to sit your pan on, for convenience. If by some chance some local council inspector comes by and wants to issue a ticket... "Nar mate. we're just having a BBQ !" We're just lettin' the wood burn down a bit to give us some hot ashes to cook over". So here, just having some form of wood fired Brazier or Firepit going in your backyard, to stand around at having drinks with your mates, is a no-no. But have a table or cooler setup nearby with some long toasting forks around, and a few sausages or somesuch... and you'll be right mate. Obviously folks should always be sure to obey local laws, including some times of Total Fire Bans, when there is imminent danger of bad forest/wild/bushfires.

@@sandibaker7646 Several waves of Pacific Islanders settled in these lands, even before the later arrivals from Britain and Europe in the late 1700's onwards. There's a longstanding tradition here, of about 700 years, of having in-ground cooking pits (called an "umu"). Large rocks are placed in the bottom of the hole, one metre deep, maybe more. A fire is set and after some good sized pieces of wood have burned away to ash, the rocks will be VERY HOT with stored heat. Historically you'd put someone you didn't like in the now hot "umu" (earth oven) but nowadays we're a bit more civilised so usually use some pre-butchered pig or sheep, half or whole carcasses. The meat can have Kumara (the Pacific and South American sweet potatoes) added with the meat, covered with some damp green leaves, and covered over in soil. The mixture of dry heat stored in the rocks below and the moisture from the leaves, with the overlay of a thin layer of soil keeping the steam and heat in . (The fire is well out by that time, so it doesn't need to breathe oxygen to burn, that's why you need to get the rocks in the bottom, good and hot beforehand). It's left for several hours, can be most of the day, ie set up in the morning ready for an evening feast. The event itself is usually known as a "Hangi" (usually pronounced "Hung-ee"). They're not common where I am but are far more common in some other regions. Here we more likely use an LPG (propane gas) BBQ and cook up some sausages from the local supermarket.

I found using an auger bitt to drill holes into the stump speeds up the process. The old days were far more fun. Use a certain fertilizer , add a little "liquid" . drill a hole through the middle of the stump to the ground underneath . Put your fert blend into the hole, attach a cracker Firework, light then run like crazy. After the band, pick up the stump pieces you can find . Do it right and none of the stump pieces will be in view

Auger bit helps a ton. I use the inside of an old wash machine. Set it on a couple blocks over the stump. Build the fire. Keeps everything semi contained and the air coming in from underneath creates a nice hot fire.

Two years ago I successfully burnt out a 4 ft in diameter Locust Tree stump. The prep took me 1 year. I bored holes criscross in the stump with my chainsaw then poured used engine oil in the bore cuts. Then the stump was covered with a tarp after adding the oil (2gallons 4x) During the first snow storm I ignited the stump with a garden torch. After one day of burning, it was completely gone, leaving a huge crater.

@@rfcasey Well, we charge $125 as a service minimum and we ARE the game in town. There are tons of weekend warriors doing it on the cheap and many cheaper than you can rent one for but I digress. The numbers you quoted are NOT just for grinding its the whole experience, as in Grind, debris removal, and topsoil installation typically so those figures are skewed. 2ndly If you spent 16 hours removing said stump but you can rent one for $200. That makes your time worth $12 Hour, would still hire.

It works best if you dig the dirt around the stump about 6" inches and hose the dirt off the stump and wait a short while for the water to drip dry. The fire will dry the rest.

thats fine if you are not in town, we have a burn ban in san antonio and i have a huge stump right at ground level in my front yard right by the sidewalk. i wanted to drill big holes in it and fill it with kerosene or other flammables and burn it with my home made flame thrower, just a high powered pear burner but has oxygen i can power to it, city says no way.

put an iron pipe into the middle of the fire, and a blow dryer set on low class of blower on and let it blow air under the ashes that will form over the top. It will get hot enough to melt an iron skillet, Which I have done by accident trying to melt copper. Ant it will keep the ashes blown out of the root tunnels and burn them all the way to the tips. Then you will need a lot of sand.

@@stevanrose7439 Last year I had an old redbud tree get blown down in a storm. Here is what I did to get rid of the stump. The stump was partially hollowed due to age. I used a hole saw to cut a 2" hole on one side as close to the ground as possible. Then I got a length of rigid electrical conduit & drove it into the hole. Then I connected my shop vac to the end of the conduit, shop vac set up for exhaust (blowing). Then I placed an entire bag of charcoal briquettes inside the stump, lit it & turned on the vac. Took most of the afternoon for the stump to completely burn. Even then there was a small part sticking out of the ground that I had to attack with an ax. Lesson learned: Stumps be hard to burn. Can be done but difficult.

About the only things that work on fresh stumps are stump grinders, bull dozers, and excavators. It used to be local teenage boys with shovels and axes would do the job, but I haven't found a teenage boy that I would trust with an axe who is willing to put forth the effort.

I used to burn out stumps using a make shift tripod, hung a large vegetable can with a small hole in bottom, filled can with old motor oil, set the stump on fire and let the dripping oil feed the fire, next day stump gone.

Generally softer, or rotten wood will, but this was a hardwood tree. Very dense and low to the ground so no real oxygen or space to burn

For the most part......the leaf blower is not helping. By blowing the fire.......your blowing the heat away. A slow burn is far better. Keeps the heat in place. But if you need to do this job in a hurry..... go for it ! It would take a lot less kindling to do the job with out using the blower

@@exoman First I stated for the " most part " . I didnt say the leaf blower would slow it down. I stated it would speed it up. But it would take more kindling to do the same job as if it were just left to burn slowly . On a cold day would you stay warmer on a windy day....compare to a calm day with the temp. the same ? Ive worked at burning a many wood piles in my time ! A slow burn is best. Keeps the heat in ! Same is true burning a pile of trees / wood on a windy day. It will require restacking the wood pile up wind because the heat is blown down wind. Left alone... with out wind......the pile would probably burn entirely on its own. After all...... most fire departments use gas powered leaf blowers to put out grass fires in CRP ( conservation reserve program acres ) . Its because the leaf blower forces the heat away.......and puts the fire out !
