Best do this in dead winter or have no other bushes near. My neighbor burned old brush pile and stump thought the fire was out. The root burned for days finally caught the bushes on fire that were quite a ways from the original fire. Luckily the other neighbor saw the bushes on fire and called the fire dept. Owner was positive the fire was out but the root was like a fuse under the ground.

Same here, I burn some smooth bark mesquite trees.After the fire was out ( or I thought it was ). I stacked some new brush on top of the previous burn spot like 6 days later. On the 7th day, my wife came out and told me, "Are you really fire burning again" I looked outside, and that new stack of materials caught on fire. Here's a tip, the ash over the top of the charcoal is like a insulator. It will keep the fire "smothering". When I added the new wood, I probably disturbed ash and allowed air and with the new materials, it was able to catch on fire.

Huh never really thought about doing it that way, but I can definitely see how the oil would saturate the stump. The holes would also help keep it burning like a Dakota fire pit. Word to the wise, when it's as low as you need, flood the whole area with water. As much as you can, because those roots can keep burning slowly under ground and spread the burn to other nearby places.

I've seen several people comment on other videos about how the roots can burn underground. I don't doubt that they can, but I don't understand how they can without oxygen. I've got a large tree about 15 feet away from my stump that I plan on burning, so I am concerned about it.
@davethekiwibloke
@davethekiwibloke Жыл бұрын
@@twc9000 Dirt is porous, so even underground there's small amounts of oxygen available for combustion, and also from the space that the burned material leaves behind. The release of heat also causes movement/shrinkage in the soil as moisture dissipates and allows air to slowly filter in. When the conditions are right (and it's not alway so), the underground fire can burn for a long time...also as an interesting related topic, read up on underground peat fires, those are scary.

💯 I’m seeing this as the body count from the wild fires in Hawaii just topped 100 with over 1000 people still unaccounted for. Fire not an option for my stump by curb in suburban community. There are only a couple differences., such as the size of the holes and I use the stump as the base for a regular campfire that I light with paper or dead leaves. You can also use potassium nitrate (Salt Peter). About 1 pound. Drill a hole about 12” deep and fill it full then water it in. Come back when the stump is d ry (6 months or so) and light it. The stump and most of the side roots will burn like a fuse. Will smolder for days.

Instead of spending days/weeks and so much work and effort, why not just grind the stump down with a chainsaw and grinder and then kick dirt over it. Next stump you should do the barrel method. Get an old barrel or aluminum trash can, drill some holes around the bottom, throw some kindling on it and I suppose you could use old oil to help it. If I ever have to get rid of a stump I'm going to try that out but since you have 20 stumps I bet you could do it and see what the outcome/differences are. I've also seen people make it into a rocket stump burner but I don't think I would want to deal with blowing air into it. Go search barrel stump burner if you don't know what I'm talking about.

When drilling fairly deep into wood, especially slightly or more wet wood, the resistance against the drill bit will become to be very much, so the bit must be slowly removed from the hole while still turning, to make the hole diameter slightly bigger than the bit, to eliminate the resistance. depends on the type of trees your'e trying to graft. They can't just graft to any other type of tree typically. Also, a trunk that large is going to rot before a graft can take hold. It also appears weathered, so it's already dead.

Over the course of 1.5 to 2 months I hand dug out two stumps in the back yard. I still have 1/2 of a stump out back I've kept so I can exercise by lifting it (flipping it over) It weighs about 200 lbs.

I do not use any oil at all. Or drilling holes. I have a 30 inch diameter piece of steel pipe I put around the stump. You could use cinder blocks. Then I just start a fire and keep it going. When the logs burn down, I use the leaf blower just like you did to blow the ashes out. Then I pile more wood into the pipe. Repeat as needed.

Hi, thanks for the video. Yesterday I cut the bottom out of a 55 gallon burning barrel/drum. Thought it might work for burning stumps or roots. Plan to try burning some roots on the surface where I park my camper, about 30 feet from the tree. Is there a way you can kill roots with out killing the tree? Thought about cutting a section of the root out and then dealing with the end away from the tree.

cement mixing tub is wider and would cover the entire stump. :) also might want to use draft to your advantage by drilling down deep into the stump, saturate with oil, then dill out the bottom of the stump into the soil crating a sort of central air shaft. Then take a soil auger and drill down through the soil at a angle to meet up with the bottom of the " central air shaft" in the middle of the stump, creating a sort of rocket stove. the additional airflow will help keep the fire lit even once the first pile of logs has burnt up.

If you can't use fire for whatever reason you can drill holes. (The more the merrier with a big stump) use white vinegar and salt in the drilled holes and cover tightly with a plastic bag. It may take longer but eventually, that stump will flake off like a scab.

If you don't have used cooking oil but need to get rid of a stump, ask local restaurants. They have to pay to dispose of used frier oil and many places will be happy to give you some. There's a place near me that gives used cooking oil away to people who filter it and run their diesel engines on it.

Mr Know It All, what if you have put a barrel on top of that stump as a chimney? Would that have increase the temperature for that fire?
@senatorjosephmccarthy2720
@senatorjosephmccarthy2720 Жыл бұрын
It might if the barrel is set on about 6 bricks so somewhere around the right amount of air can be drawn in from the fire. Too much air and some of the advantage is lost, not enough and same. I'd say the chances of it creating a helpful draft are small and not worth the time. The diagonal holes can intersect the center fire hole, making them air intake, and will provide plenty of draft.

The wick of a candle burns slower with wax. A stump burns slower with oil. Just the holes and maybe some chain-saw slacks should do the job maybe some air forced in to the fire?

Did you know that on most battery operated drills, like that red one that you use, if you tighten the chuck by hand and click it twice, that loosen it one click, the chuck locks and the but will not fall out? However if you leave it at the 2 click point it will loosen 55% of the time for some reason that i do not know.
