Ava's When They See Us was really the game changer taking them out of the shadows to put them on the path to healing. Thank God that Rev. Al, WBLS, the Ken & Sarah Burns' doc, the monetary awards, etc. kept the story alive over the years, but it was really the opportunity to be SEEN in the aptly titled When They See Us that finally allowed them to see themselves, one another, and to be SEEN as humans, not a label with a weight around their necks. You can see the healing journey - even from May when WTSU was released, until now...even the relationship between Yusef & Korey is evolving since May. God bless all the people who had the courage to defend them even when it wasn't/especially when it wasn't popular. That's COURAGE! God bless you Korey, Antron, Kevin, Raymond & Yusef!

But the people that have a difficult time understanding this are: 1) Normal human beings with a conscience that wouldn't dream of saying these things. If ANYTHING, someone with a conscience would DOWNPLAY their role in a terrible crime. 2) People that don't work in a prison like I do. Just recently, I had an inmate on our behavioral unit tell me that in the 8 months that he'd left our yard (only to return) he got married, but his new wife died while having a seizure. He told the story like he made it up (he's not a great liar at all; most inmates are better). He looked like he was trying to keep a straight face..............which is the same look I was giving him while trying to feign sympathy for the death of a girl that probably never existed. I believe he might use this STORY as an excuse to have PTSD later. Mentally ill and/or sex offenders will sometimes talk about sex crimes they didn't do. Look at those two disgusting awful men that each claimed (SEPARATELY) that THEY were the ones that raped and killed JonBenet. One was a drifter and the other lives in Thailand. They get off on talking about their twisted fantasies. Yet neither of them probably did it. If I remember correctly, one of them wasn't even in town when it happened. So Reyes claiming SOLE responsibility for the rape makes perfect sense. He's a disgusting horrible human being. But so were the other five that night who have now been awarded millions. And others capitalized on this too. Some poor woman gets raped and beaten to within inches of her life, and every higher up - from Hollywood film directors, to people on both sides of the political isle, to people on both sides of the race debate.............all jump in and get something out of their version of what took place. And if you believe what's implied in that article I posted above, Mayor DeBlasio and Al Sharpton may have benefitted from the politics behind all this too. And the politics of inmates saying/doing anything to either stay on a certain yard or be moved to a different yard.............this occurs ALL the time in the prison system. Reyes' is an all too familiar character to me. All inmates are different, but there's a whole category of Reyes-type inmates. I absolutely believe Officer Eric Reynolds. So shame on Ava Duverney. I liked the movie Selma, but she needs to stick to making movies.............she is NOT Scotland Yard. And in the case of the WM3, shame on Johnny Depp who I've always thought was creepy anyway, Marilyn Manson, the Osbournes who gave Damien Echols a good review on his book High Magick, that dumb a*s Dixie Chick, and finally Eddie Veder.............whose voice I've always loved. But these idiots are not being paid to be detectives either. Americans need to grow the hell up. And use the left side of their brain. They need to stop believing everything they see on the "boob tube" as my great grandfather used to call it. This is how we got an UNqualified REALITY SHOW HOST as POTUS. Even though in the 2016 primaries we had 14 QUALIFIED Republicans and 5 QUALIFIED Democrats...............all with resumes and records of what they've already done while in office. But 'Murica elected some pig because they saw him on TV.

Korey's poem at 10:28 was off the chain and its play on words was so on point it is hard to believe he did it off the top of his head. Either way, i have much respect for these men, including Antron Richardson, who was not present at this gathering due to the traumatic effect it had on him and his family, for their fortitude, consistancy, growth, focus and ability to be "better not bitter"!

The CP5 have never been exonerated, not even according to the legal definition of this term. Robert Morgenthau, the man who originally prosecuted the CP5, recommended that, in light of Matia Reyes’ confession that it was he and he alone who attacked Meili, their convictions be vacated. The latter means simply that the five would now be entitled to new trials. Unsurprisingly, they chose not to avail themselves of this option.

@@asya8022 There were a lot of motivations for Reyes to admit to the entire crime. Including housing issues. Unfortunately, this is an all too familiar scenerio to me. You've never worked in a prison. I do. It seems counterintuitive to normal people and even to most criminals that someone would admit to MORE crimes than they've done. But there is a certain subcategory of criminals that will take even more credit for heinous things they haven't done. Rather like a fisherman telling a "fish story". Like they're bragging. They'll even make up stories about things they HAVEN'T done or experienced. I don't know if they get off on it, or if they think they're shocking the officers or other inmates. It's difficult to guess the motivation of someone without a conscience at all. In my experience, this category is usually low functioning and SEEMINGLY childlike, but is also the absolute LOWEST form of psychopath. We have one on our psych unit right now that can't even be trained to behave in the prison environment. And it's NOT because he's crazy or delusional. He was sent to our unit to see if we could do ANYTHING for him. Unfortunately we can't, and we're going to be sending him to a unit where he'll be locked down for the rest of his life. You can have a "logical" conversation with him, and he follows direction when he WANTS to, but every time we take him out of his cell, he eventually tries to attack staff. It might take a day or two, but it happens. His crime was hacking a female to death; a female that took him into her home. When I see Reyes' "mugshot", where he looks sort of goofy, like he might crack a smile at any minute, but also like you can only imagine him doing a petty crime like stealing from a convenience store...like he wouldn't be capable of a real crime (like raping his own mother, which he did, or raping and killing a woman in front of her children, which he did), and he has an almost childlike quality to him, it reminds me of the inmate where I work. He acts like a goofy little clown, and makes a lot of immature sexual gestures towards females. If you didn't know better, you wouldn't be afraid of him. He doesn't come from the same background as Reyes, and he doesn't look like Reyes, but he has the same affect. And he'd kill you as soon as look at you. He doesn't care if you're male, female, a child, etc. It is VERY possible for an inmate like Reyes to confess to something he didn't do or didn't ENTIRELY do. Remember when JonBenet was killed ? Well, now we all know that it was her f*cked up 10 year old brother Burke that killed her. But in the meantime, TWO men CLAIMED they had raped and killed JonBenet. Each claimed they did it alone. Each claimed full responsibility for that crime. One wasn't even in the country when the murder happened. One even went on TV and did an interview. There are some sick people out there.

I'm going with the second possibility. Because if you're going to REFUTE the original sentence, then wouldn't you include MORE information in your movie ?? TWO sets of MULTIETHNIC juries found these a*sholes guilty. Again, why would a movie director decide to LEAVE OUT information from her documentary ? For the same reason that the creators of Paradise Lost did the same thing regarding the West Memphis Three. And they were guilty too.
