So disheartening to see the damage. Not the cost, more the time to re establish. I could have done so much more to protect, just wasn't prepared for such a long cold spell. Lesson definitely learnt.

Very informative video Kris. We got down to nearly minus 10 here in the NW. Previously we haven't had below minus 5 for at least the last 10 years! A few results are listed below: All trachys are looking fine - no damage whatsoever. Even the very small ones. Brahea edulis both look very sad - all leaves have browned - but I'm hopeful they will bounce back. Butia odorata - fleeced during the coldest nights and seems to have done fine. Cordyline "Charlie Boy" - got these because they are meant to be the hardiest pink/purple variety but they've both completely collapsed even with wrapping. Agaves Montana and Americana both look fine - they are under a rain shelter for the winter but no other protection. Agave ovatifolia wasn't under the shelter and looks like it's a goner - the centre has completely rotted away. This has surprised me as I had read previously that they were very well suited for wet and cold British winters but the other two agaves have done a lot better. It might pup, I guess, so I'm leaving it in place for now. Cycas revoluta - inside an unheated shed for the coldest week but all the leaves have browned off. The trunk is still solid though so hopefully it's pulled through. Opuntia engelmannii and vulgaris - both have lost all their pads but the main base seems solid, hoping they will return. I have backup pads of both in the house so I'm not overly worried. Yucca rostrata - no protection at all, looking fine. Musas - basjoo has collapsed down to the ground but I'm not worried. Sikkimensis and lasiocarpa both disappeared under the ground but genuinely no idea if they'll make it back. Scheffelera Taiwania - only a small plant so I gave it some minimal protection (an upturned plant pot over it on the coldest nights) and seems to have done fine. No sign of damage. Melianthus major - totally collapsed but solid right at the base so I'm sure it will return. Overall not as many losses (so far) as I feared - hopefully spring will work some miracles and we'll see our precious plants again!

Same as you with aloe striatula cut right back . Mines in full sun in summer and now in February but back in December during that first cold spell the sun never touched them,and its gone totally black . Yet iv an uncovered variegated Agave Americana that's south facing gets full sun all day that is untouched by -11 which is just crazy .just shows you location through winter is everything . My 8 year old cordylines that get sun all year apart from about 30 days mid Dec to mid January are destroyed yet the ones in full sun on my south facing front garden that are tiny 2 year old plants have all survied. Seeing the same on the Chrinodenderons ,ones in full sun just showing slight leaf damage, but the ones in full shade look awful .

I'm down south and we must have had a much colder winter than you so far Both my cipd have brown leaves All my Tree Fern are frazzled My scheffler Taiwana are defoliated And the cordylines have lost their growth points. It's really interesting how the minimum temperatures may have been the where you are but the plants are affected differently

Same here in Surrey. I fear for my dicksonias. All the growing points of my mature cordylines are done, euphorbia melifera is mush but should shoot, agaves damaged. Defo worst damage in over 10 years

Lost the tops of a few green cordylines yet my two red ones seem ok. Musa Basjoos have mostly been levelled, even ones that are a bit more sheltered . On the flip side my waggies look great . It's just a case of wait and see what the rest of winter brings and hope for some spring recovery.

Very interested to see how your Martians and Latisectus recover this year. Also want to see how your Musa Sikkimensis gets on come spring! Hopefully it sends out loads of pups :-)

I'd be pretty confident the sikhamensis will grow back from the roots. This will be my sikhamensis 4th winter. 50% of the time it dies back to the base even if I protect them. They do come back really strongly though with even better colour on the foli. Almost worth not bothering protecting them to get that new vibrant foliage

I’m in Bedford in what normally seems like a warm spot and my plants are looking way worse than yours! I know it was definitely a degree or so colder here than nearby (further north) Northamptonshire for some reason. 😔

My aloe striatula is mush, my torbay dazzler has just survived but looking sorry for itself my lotus banana is looking the worst it's ever looked in five years, I've got four different agave they've all come through with not too much damage just a few lower leaves like yours I'm in Chesterfield so similar weather to you.

Hi can you settle an argument about Trachy & waggis.. is that if you cut the lower leaves off it will encourage new growth
@YorkshireKRIS
@YorkshireKRIS Жыл бұрын
No I don't think that's correct. The more leaves, the quicker it should be able to grow

I'm sorry because there is a minimum primary protection accessible to all for small palms which consists of bringing the foliage in the middle and closing it on itself with a hemp rope tie in order to protect the central bud and the central leaves using peripheral sheets. Then, it will be easier to wrap everything in a non-woven protective veil or a canisse in natural material. You will finish everything by mulching the soil and that's it.

@@stephenkeeble6857 Unfortunately, this is not enough because you had to go to the next step: wrap everything in a non-woven protective veil or a canisse in natural material

All of my cordylines, green and coloured forms have had tops killed (including an approx 15ft green one), canary island date palms all dead, musa basjoo cut to ground level and even my phormiums that were all sizeable specimens appear to be dead. I think the lowest temperature we had was around -10.

Same here with my 2 green cordys & 3 redstar! The green ones roughly 6ft tall in pots have collapsed at the crown so think it'll be a case of out with the saw, lope the tops off and hope for the best 🤞
