Love this! I tend to look for interesting videos to put on my phone while I wash & dry my glassware from the night before and this was a perfect choice! We have four Riedel Vinum Cabernet/Merlot glasses that we use for all wine types. They cost just under $40 each and were absolutely life changing when we got them! So important I especially love the razor sharp edge that feels like it could cut the bridge of your nose if it hits too hard. Wine flows over the edge so smoothly.

Very good topic to do a video on. You could do a series of these on different decanters, slow ox versus decant versus pop and pour and so on. I use my Gabriel Gold glass for tasting as it really helps define and separate out every single aroma and flavour. That being said, sometimes ignorance is bliss as it also highlights imperfections more than my cheaper glasses. I will therefore sometimes switch to a cheaper Riedel afterwards to enjoy the wine more.

Never will forget when we visited Silvano Bolmida in Piemonte for BAROLO tasting. We spent over two hours with the junior winemaker, the son and while trying some Barolo he said, I convinced my dad to get different wine glasses, while tasting with standard pinot noir glasses as you should with nebbiolo he brought out the zalto pinot noir glas and let us try with those. It was mind blowing how much more you could smell and taste with those compared to the previous ones. Wine glasses matter. Needless to say ever since I sip my Pinots and Barolos from the Zalto Pinot glas, which I love. For white we for quite some time had the zalto universal glas in your video, great glass but it breakes easily. So we switch to Gabriel Gold for all our whites (except chardonnay, pinot glass here again) and the gabriel gold is amazing and more solid when cleaning. In fact watching this video while drinking a Mosel Riesling natural wine from 2019 with the gabriel gold. Cheers! :)

For most wines at home, my go-to's are a 12 oz Beer Snifter (~a cross between Riedel Performance and Rovsya glasses in shape but with shorter and sturdier stem/base and a miniscule tulip at the rim) that was included in a beer dinner for craft brewery as well as a large Brandy Glass (stemmed) for those needing more air. Both are nice in that the glasses isn't too thick but easy to handle in terms of weight while not being too dainty and fragile.

I love the riedel pinot noir glass but, like you, I find that it can accentuate alcohol on anything that isn’t really high quality burgundy or nebbiolo. It also works well for late harvest wines. The riesling performance is usually on sale for pretty cheap on Amazon and is awesome for Bordeaux blends and higher acid whites.

I've been using Riedel since early 2000's. Not sure what they are but they look similar to the 002. They feel good in the hand and I have no complaints in how the wine tastes. My palate is not nearly as good as yours though so for me I am sticking with the Riedel but will buy some of these 002's. :). Thanks for doing this comparison. Very interesting for sure.

I have the Ridel Pinot Noir Performance and it's a joy to drink from it. It's like a celebration. The only issue is that they are a bit of a pain to wash and dry because of the size and shape, so I often use the Gabriel standard and keep the riedel for my nebbiolos and some pinots. Washing is a thing. The other is storage, when the glasses are too tall, they are a pain to store if you don't have limitless space...

Spiegelau definition is awesome. If you love the look and feel of Zalto (light weight, clean lines, thin lip and stem, wide base), but dislike the price and durability (I have broken so many Zaltos). I have an answer for you: Spiegelau Definition! Basically a more durable version of Zalto (and this one you really can bend) for a third of the price. Winner winner chicken dinner :)

Great video, thanks for the experiment! However, I am still not much convinced that glass shape/size can make much difference on how a wine taste on the palate (if we control for previous oxygen exposure), from a scientific point of view...maybe it changes slightly the entrance, but then the liquid flow independently in the mouth, so I'd expect the effect to be mostly psychological suggestion

hello Dr Horkey I have got some stemless Riedel glasses 2nd hand a long time ago but as a small drinker I paid no attention to their effect. Last week I had lunch with my friend and I bring over a half bottle of magnum size "Red Domaine Le Sang Des Cailloux Vacqueyras "Azailais" 2021", which I drank 2 times with my home boss> I read the bottle label and found the grape is Syrah, so I brought 2 stemless Riedel Glasses to the lunch and shared the bottle with my friend. Holy Cow, the wine simply 'mysteriously' open up in the R Glass, what an experience for wine serving in the right Glass, if not the Perfect. So I am now a convinced WG fan, and Luckily I got some Riedel Vitis and Vinum Glasses 2nd hand just now< hope they will bring me more good experience. My problem right now is I do not find a good glass for Barolo. Cheers Doctor!

I have used the Gabriel Glass gold the stems are super delicate and tend to be the glasses weakness - the standard art seems to have a way better QPR. Other glasses that I have used include Lehman glass range, grassel, plumm, Ridell extreame shiraz range. Wine glass geek here! Own pretty much everything from Riedel to Zaltos. Right now, Riedel Superleggero Bordeaux for my classified Growth Bordeaux & Spiguelau Definition for most of my other reds. For whites, usiing the Riedel Veloce Riesling for all exept for Napa Chardonnay, then I use the Veloce Chardonnay ..the wide opening works great with that oaky white wine. Riedel 001 Magnum my go to glass for when I have a lot of guests…works well with all wine tupes at a great price. Also, looks really good….always get compliments from my guests!! Salud 🍷

This may have been your geekiest video yet, ha! 😀 I think that this is a highly personal and subjective topic, and there is no one-size-fits-all. Perhaps in some cases, like with wine the law of diminishing returns can also apply. Previously, I really enjoyed our Schott Zweisel red wine glasses and I found they worked pretty well for reds, whites, rose and sparkling wine. I did get two wine glasses for my L2 WSET course back in 2014 that I still have. At the moment we are using IKEA glasses when having friends over and when its just us we use Italian Luigi Bormioli Rocco glasses. Interesting how the Rovsya performed so well. I know that Zalto is one of the best, but at 90 bucks a pop I would be so afraid of dropping one, or even worse pouring wine for a friend and then he/she breaks it. 🥲 It seems that finding an equilibrium between quality, experience and price seems like the best way to go here. Cheers and fun video, glad that you covered a pretty extensive range of prices and quality.
