Thanks for sharing, doc! Love the collection and totally agree that these grapes can stand up to some of the most prestigious of widely planted grapes. Of the lot, I have only had the Areni, Xinomavro, Tokaj, Saperavi and Touriga Nacional. I would have to say that the Zorah from Armenia is by far my favorite of the bunch. Amazing tannin structure and long, layered finish. M.O.B also makes some amazing Touriga Nacional for the price. Both are definitely must buys for me whenever I see them in stock.

We were at the Regionala wine fair in Belgrade a couple of days ago which gathers producers from all of ex-Yugoslavia focusing on domestic grapes. Teran, prokupac, vranac, furmint, plavac mali, kadarka, lipolist, krokan, blatina, žilavka, žlahtina, malvazija, smederevka etc. I think it's the best opportunity to sample grape varieties from this region. In addition, local specialities were served as samples so there was a possibility to let the taste receptors get back on track between the wines. Highly recommend to visit it next year!

I have tried 5 of 8, BUT I have a Saperavi in my cellar waiting to try still,so soon it will be 6! Armenia has been on my list for a long time as a wine country to try wines from, but it is very hard to find Armenian wine in central Ohio currently. The Nero Uva is on my list now, thank you for teaching me about it! I’ve only had Touriga Franca as part of the blend in Port, so I’ll look out for that one as a dry wine now. I took up learning about wine as a pandemic lock-down hobby, and it has been my goal to try as many different things as I can (the wine world is so vast!) I’m currently at 37 different countries and about 208 different grapes, so I LOVE videos like this to give me more ideas. So much fun!

Another great video and lots of fun trying to guess which cultivars you were drinking from which country/region. I don't know much about Serbian wine, so I didn't know Prokupac. The Moldovan/Romanian lesser varietal was a curveball, as most wine geeks have probably heard about Festa Neagra, but Rara Neagra was new one for me. I was kicking myself that I didn't get the Nero di Troia from Puglia; all the other ones, my guesses were spot on . As far as trying all of these grapes I have drunk a lot of Kekfrankos from nearly all of the Hungarian wine regions, pretty amazing varietal and it shows terroir and wine making skills pretty well. Touriga Nacional/Franca, have had them a few times and generally enjoyed most of them. As for the others living in Taiwan/Asia the rest are pretty rare and exotic, so either very hard to find and/or very expensive if you can find them Xinomavro is becoming somewhat more well known here, but only 1 or 2 importers bring it into the country, so it's still very much a niche wine. I think in more developed/mature wine markets, like the States and Europe it's easier to find some of these. But like you said in a lot of cases these wines are only available in their country of origin. Certainly like the idea of a video on lesser known Italian varietals, that could be a fun and educational video.
@drmatthewhorkey
@drmatthewhorkey 2 жыл бұрын
Ahhh you are a pro if you got most of them right! My friend brings a lot of these crazy wines into Singapore but Taiwan is obviously different… You did like the format and trying to guess along??? If so, I’ll put an Italian variety one in the back pocket to do in the future. You have tasted Nero d’Troia though correct???

@@drmatthewhorkey Unfortunately, I haven't gotten a chance to try Nero di'Troia yet. I did see it at Costco a few weeks ago, but we have so much wine at home already. But hopefully I will get around to it soon. As far as Kekfrankos is concerned it's point of origin is in present day Slovenia. But before the Treaty of Trianon which dismembered Hungary, it was in old Hungary. It's parents are Heunisch Blanc (Gouais Blanc) and Zimmettraube Blau. (Caroline Gilby MW in Decanter Hungary 2021 Guide). Sorry about all the wine geekiness, hope you enjoy it and looking forward to edizione italiana!

The specific one I tried was like a smoky Pinot Noir with slightly higher tannin, which doesn’t sound great if you described it to me that way but it was a real winner.
