I read an interview with Mike Campbell of the Heartbreakers and he said that on all the Tom Petty stuff that Jeff Lynne produced they doubled standard tuned guitar with Nashville tuned guitar when they wanted a twelve string sound rather than using an actual twelve string. He pointed out that you can be much more precise with picking and arpeggios than with a real twelve string because with a real twelve string, one string of the pair will always be struck a fraction of a second later, whether strumming or picking. Jeff Lynne, being a sonic perfectionist, didn’t like this and wanted the precision of exactly doubling on a second guitar.

That makes perfect sense, I will re-listen to the Lynne tracks now.....

I read something similar from Johnny Marr - he said that the vast majority of Smiths songs featured various layers of standard and Nashville tuned acoustic and elctric guitars, mostly just to add some body and warmth to the tracks. Nashville tuning gives you the brightness of the upper 12-string register without the fullness of a "proper" 12-string.

That makes so much sense now. Listening to Full Moon Fever and Into the Great Wide Open have that sound I always thought was some weird 12 string. Thanks for the Trivia because I LOVE that sound!

I've kept my Mustang in Nashville tuning for years and have used it on almost everything. Great for sparkle and glue. Another use is to play a song intro with a Nashville and then when the song gets going with standard tuning, it packs more wallop. I actually told Rick Beato about this before he started YouTubing and you could see the gears whirring in his head. Also great if you wat a wiiide stereo 12-string.

Over 20 years ago, a friend and I married a banjo pot to a guitar neck. It was kind of neat, but the sound was muddy. Later I changed the low E and A with a D and G tuned up to E and A. It was an improvement, but still didn't wasn't anything special. Several months ago, I watched some KZbin vids, learned about Nashville tuning and decided to give it a try on my banjitar. I am absolutely thrilled with the result. It sounds like a million bucks and I find myself reaching for it to play more and more different songs. It really adds a lot to the sound playing with other stringed instruments.

My baritone telecaster is strung with Nashville A-A and it is magic in a mix. It's a mid-range sparkle, and you basically use a standard set of 10-46 ( 14-18s-13-17-26-36 ) - you just take out the 10 and 46 and add a 14 and 18s. Try it : you will be amazed.

If you really want to commit an electric guitar to Nashville stringing, it helps to adjust the saddles to intonate it properly. The saddle positions for large E & A strings will be very different for the thinner octave up strings. It's not hard to learn to do yourself. It's a great use for your old Squier Strat that you're not using much anymore!

I always told myself if I ever get a second acoustic, I'll string it up in Nashville tuning. Here I am, 25 years later, with 3 electrics and the same, single acoustic....... One day..... Side note: seeing all the white JHS pedals on a single board gives me anxiety for some reason. The thought of forgetting which pedal is which in the heat of the moment and not being able to read the text with my glasses off. (because when I leave them on, they end up hanging from the rafters at the end of the gig)

A super cheap and dodgy way I have used on demos for someone is record another track with just the top three strings and then tune the top 3 of them to EAD and then play what you play on the low strings on the top three strings. Gives the nice jangle of the Nashville tuning without another guitar reasonably well but sadly doesn't allow for any complex playing. Very ghetto.
