We're big fans of alternate tunings here at Stringjoy-particularly of Nashville Tuning since we're , you know, in Nashville-so we couldn't help but wonder, what happens when you tune a guitar to Nashville Tuning, but then tune it down four half-steps to C Standard (but with the octave ethos of Nashville Tuning)? Let's find out, shall we?

what about the reverse of nashville tuning? like, instead of the upper 4 strings being replaced with lighter strings of a 12-string set, how about the lower 4 strings being replaced with the heavier gauge strings of a 12-string set?
@davidl9999
@davidl9999 Ай бұрын
@@-jank-willson I think that you mean the DGBE strings - which are the "upper 4", unless you play a right-handed guitar left-handed like Jimi, but I digress... Trying this (Nashville Tele w/B-bender) - it sounds like a regular electric until you get on the A (5th) and E (6th) and the bass timbre you're approaching dies and you get the partial octave jump on the A string. To me, it's not "jangly" in a good way, and the jump is in the wrong place (unless I suppose you play more lead between the 4th and 5th strings and you like it that way), but that's just me.

A lot of heavy bands from the nineties used a lot of C tuning in their songs. Great examples of this are "Seasons" by Chris Cornell and "Space Cadet" by Kyuss.

Seasons was done in FCFCFF tuning (Open F5), also could be done as DADADD with a capo on 3rd fret, yet the original was recorded tuned up instead of a capo.

I've played around with Gambale tuning, which is the same concept, but starting with A, so another 2.5 steps down. I love the tight voicings you can get in it. I do miss the range though. I always intend to set up an 8 string like that, but I never do.

Same notes as normal, just an octave up on the bottom 4 strings. As long as the octave is right, your tuner will read the same as normal.

OK I got something interesting to try... I see some application for this on a 7 string guitar. Not so much to go lower for doom metal or drop-tuned stuff but similar to what you have and extending the top end. Though lower could be interesting too... Keep the tuning similar to what you have and add a high string a 4th up. In other words, C3, F3, A#3, D#4, G3, C4, F4 or C3, F3, A#3, D#4, G3, B4, F4, which shifts where the M3rd (or m6th) interval is from the 4-3 strings to the 3-2 strings. On the second tuning it maintains the "form" of standard tuning, where the 3 highest strings are tuned up a 4th, a 3rd and a 4th. You could even drop it another half step and go B3, E3, A3, D4, F#4, B4, E4 or using the other tuning shape I have above, B3, E3, A3, D4, G4, B4, E4. Use your gauges and add a .009 or .010 on top. Might be a nice blend of richness and top end jangle. Thoughts?

I have a Strat Nashville tuned to C# standard. It's an acquired taste. I originally did this as a kid on an acoustic for lack of resource reasons and using black Sabbath's master of reality album as my tuner.

What about all the way down to G standard? G3=.017, D3=.022p/.026w, Bb3=.014, F3=.019p/.022w, C3=.024p/.03, G2=.04. Several of you would no doubt want to go a little lighter than this.

its easy enough to get .007" strings how come they are not listed for purchase on the website? because need some and also need .0062" and .0065" also. And you need to let the calculator at least select a note higher than A4 for any scale lengths because that is annoying having all the other strings tuned then the last string still sitting at A4 only. People must realize what lbs. tension a gauge string shall break at, its ok, just allow the calculator to keep calculating ok, even theoretically.
@Stringjoy
@Stringjoy Жыл бұрын
Nobody makes .0065 or .0062 plains-we stopped making .007s because of the customer service headache, people would put them on sharp tuneomatic bridges and get very upset that they only last a week. It got tiresome explaining this to angry folks day in and day out. .007s can work great when the guitar is set up for it, but the vast majority of players just throw them on any old guitar and expect them to hold up like .010s
