I don't want to appear sexist, but...Women!! Also, he needs 1 12-string, 1 6-string acoustic standard tuning, 1 6-string acoustic Nashville tuning, 1 6-string electric standard tuning and 1 6-string electric Nashville tuning. Total - at VERY LEAST 5 guitars. He also needs one permanently in drop D, one tuned down a half step (for lower vocal range) and at least one or two that can be used in other tunings (one acoustic, one electric)!! So.....I guess 9 or 10 is about the minimum anybody can expect as a reasonable collection!!! Oh yes, and probably 1 4-string Bass and 1 5-string Bass (just in case!)!!

I capoed and Nashvilled my Epiphone PR-5 E/N cutaway . Discovered that layering accidentally. Did not know what Nashville was but yes 12 string jingle y feel. You are making great sounds. And here you are teaching me Lol Awesome. " Every Once In Awhile" I used it under Blackhawk as the Mandolin. And some Fleetwood Mac stuff works under well. That picking part is beautiful. Thanks so much for giving this lesson to me. I love Nashville Tuning with my looper.

For the past year I've been filling in on different instruments for different country bands. I don't mind playing the stuff, but country isn't really my thing - I'm more of a rock guy. Playing classic/blues rock-style drums, bass, and guitar on a country song might get the job done but it isn't ideal. I've been making an effort to get more into the country style lately and videos like this are really helping.

Very cool. Just getting in to Nashville tuning. As someone who’s been trying to learn guitar for 11 years, I’ve really focused on it for the past two years - never missing a day of practice. In fact, I’m always wanting to pick up and play. Every spare moment. It’s fun. And you know what? I’m finally not too bad. Now getting in to loopers, backing tracks, chasing tone, etc. I still get frustrated some time when I try to play something like Freefallin’ and sound nothing like the album. Obviously it’s mixed and stuff but a video like this really helps to show what goes in to it. Sounds great. I actually just layered 3 guitars the other day on my looper. It was really neat. Now to go discuss that Squire Mini that’ll be here in 3 days with the boss.... 😬

Very cool, first time ever learning about Nashville tuning! I could be wrong, but I think the technical way to describe the quality of the 12-string is to say that it has more sympathetic resonance. Strings on that guitar interact across the full frequency spectrum, whereas splitting 12 strings into 2 guitars makes the acoustic phenomenon impossible. Happy to hear what you might think about this.

More sympathetic resonance is a perfect way to describe why a 12-string may be more blended (or muddier) than separate standard and Nashville-tuned guitars. You nailed it, Alex.

I’d heard that this was a thing, but seeing your video has given me ideas about how I can actually do this. I’m in the UK and have recently been invited to join a friend who is a real deal Texan singer/songwriter and form a band, my background is far from this kind of thing,so I’ve been on a wonderful journey for the last year or so....thanks for what you’re doing here...he’s a big Tom Petty fan, & I can’t wait to see his face when I rock up to rehearsal with a small guitar with the wrong strings on ! Took my Nashville strung guitar to rehearsal for the first time last night, it went really well. The way the higher strings occupied a different zone within the band sound worked if anything better than I expected, I’ll definitely carry on using it. I was surprised how clearly the individual notes came across,both with strumming and picking. There was also unexpected bonus ,which you might want to share with your viewers, it’s about the guitar I used - the accepted wisdom appears to be that it makes most sense to high tune a small (ideally shorter scale length) guitar. However I don’t have one (well my Les Paul is slightly shorter but it didn’t seem right...) so that left my acoustic, which is huge, it’s a Guild from the 80’s ,Dreadnought single cut with arched back, so I used that. It sounds awesome, it felt really comfortable to play, even as I struggled to get used to a much lighter pick. Please pass on my lucky accident to your fans....there must be a considerable number of players who have followed the trend for all those lovely smaller guitars, even parlour size, which are all the rage these days ( not knocking them, still want one myself), whose Dreadnought is languishing unplayed in its case , I suggest they try high tuning it, I absolutely love the mellow, rich and full sound I’m getting, which I really wasn’t expecting. Thank you once again for your help and inspiration, I’m sure there are many other players who have also been inspired but haven’t shared, so thanks from all of them too.👍🎸 P.S. I’ve just fitted a B bender to my Tele , also awesome, diving down two rabbit holes at once😳 any chance of revisiting this on your show?

Excited for you, John! A big old Guild high-strung... Sounds like great weed: you’re high, but not TOO high. LOL. I’ve used Nashville tuning on a large body guitar, but it’s been years, so you’ve taught something me right back. Excited about your B-bender, too. I haven’t picked mine up since I recorded “After the Goldrush,” but I was just thinking about it for a new recording of “Time of the Season.” If I do it, I’ll do a video.

You’re so welcome, Brenda-le! A Tenor guitar (4-string) is on the way to being a high-strung Nashville tuned guitar...which is essentially a 6-string Alto guitar. Have fun with your layering!!

I’m late to the game, because I just saw this today (3 years after the video was posted). But I got a set of .010 to .027 strings this afternoon and converted to Nashville tuning on my Yamaha LL6M. I play acoustic rhythm in my church’s worship band, and our current temporary worship leader leads with his acoustic. Adding my LL6M to the mix is gonna sound awesome

I love layering guitars and I was surprised how good this sounds, especially with zero EQ and effects. FYI-all the acoustics were recorded in mono into a Blue Yeti Pro in cardioid polar pattern using its built-in analog output, then into a MOTU 828 mkII interface. I'm gonna try similar layering on a new original song!

A really beautiful example of a tune in Nashville 'tuning' is an instrumental called, 'Danny', by Richard Hawley. I'm sure that you'll like it. I believe that it's played on a Fylde guitar...made in Cumbria, UK.

@@davidbriggs9675 That's a beautiful track, David. I'm not certain, but the primary acoustic guitar has relatively deep bass notes - sounds like standard tuning with a capo on the 3rd fret. I do hear a subtle high doubling on certain notes that could easily be high-strung. One of the things I love about Nashville tuning is that it's rarely obvious. It just makes the guitars "glisten," for lack of a better way to describe it. Cheers!

I know that this is 5 years old, but... A technique that I use to create similar effects is to record a 6-string acoustic, duplicate the track move it ahead 20-35 msec, and then increase the pitch a full octave. If you keep them panned to the same place you get an instant 12 string. Pan them apart and you get the layered guitar effect.

That's a cool idea. It's a guitar version of ADT (Automatic Double Tracking used on vocals), but with a higher octave thrown in for added spice. Interesting thing about your approach is that it adds a high B and E up an octave (which Nashville tuning doesn't). Do you have any recorded examples? Please share!

Nice big sound! The only one I'm not crazy about is the backpacker, which sounds 'boxy' to me, although a bit of EQ would take that out... I'll have to string up my Mini Strat to Nashville tuning, that's a brilliant use for it! I have a really cool '63 Martin 5-16 short scale (a Terz, like what Sting and Ian Anderson used), which might get the treatment too. :)

A few years back, another guitarist and I were trying to figure out Bob Welch's Sentimental Lady by ear. (Perfect) Sounded like many guitars overall from multiple perspectives (12 string, 6 string and capos). So I found Bob's email and we conversed about the recording. He said Lindsay Buckingham played all the layers and Nashville Tuning and regular 6 string tunings were employed as were Capo'd tunings. So, it's not magic, but rather assembling the perfect facets for the perfect Gem. But like what you did above, I find in these situations, the same player covering all the aspects, lights up better than multiple players. Maybe because the timing is resident as is the attack. Magically Homogeneous! LOL

Dang...thanks for reminding me that Sentimental Lady is a GREAT example of the magic of standard + capo + Nashville guitars. (What sounds like a harpsichord in the intro is probably all guitar.) I’m working on an EP right now for the duo I have with my wife called Cosmic Spin. When I need “fairy dust,” I just reach for the Nashville and the magic happens instantly. Even my 23-year-old son, who’s a Rap producer, just lights up about that tone and how it takes the music up a notch every time!
