Part of the reason we marry is to be a witness to each other’s life. We mirror back acceptance and love. That is what humans crave the most, I think. When someone seeks to understand us and accepts us with our flaws, isn’t that the safest feeling ever?

I'm 34 years old, my mother and I were watching this together and near the end of it - I started to say: I see a bit of myself in him - my mom interrupted me and said "I think you are exactly like him." I then started researching autism traits in women and it was like reading a biography. Both my mom and I never understood really what was so 'different' about me and I think we may have finally figured out the final piece of my puzzle. I will be having an assessment soon. This was a wonderful docuseries for so many reasons - we both loved it but it's especially incredible because I think it may have changed my life. Deep thank you to Chris and Amy for sharing their stories.

It has given me so much calmness in my life that I no longer have to wonder why I don't fit in and relax in the knowledge that it's my brain that doesn't work with today's sociatal standards. I'm also very vocal about telling people about my autism and not carring if they feel uncomfortable. That is their problem, not mine. I've far too many years feeling not quite right.

My partner is also on the Autism Spectrum. When I saw Amy speak about her husband & some of his behaviors, I was like, 'AH-HA! My partner does that, too.' Communication is our biggest challenge. It's something we consciously work on in order to lower both of our frustration levels. For my partner, his emotions are frequently delayed. For example, his father passed away & he didn't have an emotional reaction to his dad's death for about 2 months. From the outside, it looks like he's uncaring & aloof. In reality, it takes his brain longer process anything related to emotions. Once I figured that out, it helped me understand him more.

@linaulnes8821
@linaulnes8821 3 жыл бұрын
It doenst take longer, its just hat we feel it more intense so we cant take all inn all the time allways. It will break us down. So we shut out sometimes or often depending on what it is or what else is going on. It looks delayed. Its the prosess thats just so intense. For exemple I lost 3 of my closest ones last year in less then 10 months. Some hit me right away, deeply into tears and then I had to shut it out to keep going. The ones more complicated will be more difficult if its connected to other trauma for exemple interwined realtions tied to that person who died because then all the other stuff comes with it. I cant take all of them inn every minute then I wouldt function. I need to break it down a bit. And especialy when its in the middle of so much else happening. Lots of responsibility. And the fact the world is more intense for us in general, like going to the store because we our nervous system is so sensitiv. The biggest misjudgment NTs do is to think of being NDs as an illness and not empatic. I care even when a bud get crused, I actully dont know any nts who care as deeply about everything, nature and souroundings like I do. But its intense. And we dont have energy for nonsenses. Happiness to. Its so deeply and sponatouns for me. From a litt heart felt stone to someones actions. Sometimes we need time with happiness actions from someone to, because its so intense, and we often have felt manipulation and lies, and since we dont lie, we take it hard, we want to be sure and then we respond often big or very direct. I am glad you take time to try to understand you partner. But dont be like a lot of nts and think of nts as the right way and aspies the wrong. Our honest direct approch seems more empatic to us. We dont get why people hurt eachother with white lies for eksemple. Be open to learn from us aswell.

Rarely am I on the same page as other people, and God forbid I unknowingly upset someone and they expect me to pick up on it. If you're upset with me, just tell me. I don't know why I'M the rude one when beating around the bush is actually quite rude in that context.

I'm not on the spectrum--your viewpoint is 100% valid because...you know how it feels. I want you to know that as someone *not* on the spectrum, this makes me love him and recognize he is a *really, really, really* loving and viable partner. I think this gets misrepresented about Asperger's so, from the other end, people are seeing "Oh maybe I'm overlooking a fantastic partner because I don't immediately get them, or they are quirky." This is showing a full picture of the love you reap when you invest in understanding another--from both parties.

@@thedogshouterer @Shannon J I struggle understanding how aspergers ever end up in relationships. When someone I don't know talks to me, my first reaction is confusion ("Why do they talk to me?") followed by either fear ("I will surely say something wrong") or annoyance ("Why did you have to bring me into this situation?"). I'm always scared of others thinking bad about me or making fun of me because I can't tell or see the clues, so I assume the worst. I usually avoid social contacts at all costs.
@thedogshouterer
@thedogshouterer 3 жыл бұрын
@@pallandoromestamo8861 Ah, I see why that would feel impossible in those moments. I totally think those moments--and it sounds like they are in the meeting/beginning stage--are overcomeable. Especially because you are so aware of them. I dated a man with Asperger's and he was gentle and kind and sticks out as one of the kindest men I met in my 7 years online/app dating. My current partner has said a few times he feels like he could be and, as Chris said in this trailer, he has told me I am the first woman who has taken the time to understand him. I have a background working with ASD, so that helps, but I also just love and want to understand humans. I think if you worked with someone, it could help you work through those early-stage thoughts (I see a therapist weekly--I don't want you to feel l'm telling you there is "something wrong with you that needs fixed." I need help too). If you don't want love or are not interested, that's good too. But if you want it, I absolutely think you can have it. And you deserve it. A lot of women are deeply searching for loving men.

@@lizvlx You don't necessarily "get it from" either parent. Sure, it can run in families, but it's got to start somewhere after all. Neither I nor my wife would fall on the spectrum, but our 9 y.o. son was just recently diagnosed Level 1 for repetitive behavior and Level 2 for social communication, with no intellectual impairment (freaking brilliant). My wife and I definitely have our quirks and our tendencies, but they fall within what would be considered neurotypical (which is of course just another spectrum).

@@merihanlon1493 Meri, thank YOU for being who you are. Thank YOU for helping people like me. I frequently (but unintentionally) make life hell for my wife because because of my Aspergers. As if life wasn't already difficult enough for her just living with me, she feels further isolated/lonely because many people don't offer her validation in her struggles. (Even those we've disclosed my condition to.) I'm in my 40's and we married just a handful of years ago. We had a long distance courtship during which she suspected I had ASD but (out of fear I'd resent her) she resisted making such a pronouncement hoping that one of the many counselors she was encouraging me to see would do so. Now, several years later, things are a little easier because of the many protocols I've adapted and the constant counseling/support we receive from God, professionals, and a few friends. Honestly, though, we still have a very difficult marriage on any given day but that's because we're also exact opposites as far as the Myers-Briggs Temperament Types go. We knew about this before marriage (and even agreed that our respective MB profiles describe us well) and now, a few years into it, the (frustrating) differences there still come into play VERY frequently. I'll go as far as to say I believe my personality type is more a fundamental part of me than my Aspergers and that the majority of our difficulties stem from our two differing types. To be sure, my Aspergers doesn't help one darn bit, but my MB profile basically reads like a list of the exact characteristics that frustrate her temperament type the most. One of my few regrets is that I was diagnosed so late in life so now it's so hard to adjust. But, you and others in your field are helping to prevent more cases like me.

@@emilyN1 small talk is the worst, especially for people with asd! I personally cannot understand the purpose of "small talk", except that many neurotypical people are uncomfortable with silence for whatever reason, but don't actually have anything meaningful going on in their heads to talk about. Awesome insight on a couple taking the time to really understand each other more because they really, really love each other AND want to be together. Beautiful video Amy. You both inspire me!

So you have forgiven her for stealing jokes and being a rotten person cause she married some poor sap with autism to reinvent her sagging career. You aren't too bright are you.

How do you know that she doesn’t just love him? I don’t think she’s a good comedian, but that doesn’t make her a bad person.

I love this, Amy! My son is on the spectrum. Every mom of a differently learning child wants them to grow up like any other kid - loved, accepted, invited - and appreciated - thank you for taking time to talk about and de stigmatize autism spectrum disorder. We are a growing population of beautiful, truthful, lovable human beings. All the best to you and your growing family ❤️❤️
