I don't believe ATC guy was intending to sound mean, he was just putting due emphasis on the urgent instruction. With wind 340/5 I could see the short runway 32 as an option in the moment if ATC were able to get you timed just right in between airliners using runway 17. I've noticed sometimes an airport's ATC resists changing the overall pattern direction unless the wind speed gets past something like 5-6 knots in the wrong direction, but had he felt that you were well acquainted with the layout he might have vectored you to that runway 32 instead. One thing I believe both X-Plane and MSFS simulators are great for is getting familiar with the layout of airports. Most of them are modeled reasonably accurate with the layout, including all the taxiway signs, tarmac markings, etc. at this point, even most small airports. The ones I contributed to the apt dat file years and years ago are accurate to within inches on everything. (ツ)☕☕(ツ)

Tower ATC was super nice. I don’t take his tone as negative at all.

Good job, I think you handled this well considering you were a Cessna at a busy class B, and it was your first time at that airport. If I was in your position, I would’ve done everything possible to do a short field landing and make K7, lol. But you were about 10-15 knots too fast to make that intersection.

I could have speed up a little bit during taxi, and used more brake. For sure, I learn something from every flight.

Nice video, in the 2,000s home base for me was CMA, Camarillo CA. LAX worked well with Bravo clearances but if you were planning on an LAX landing you needed to arrange it ahead of time in a GA aircraft. I live in the Midwest now and GA flies into O’Hara at 2, 3, A.m arranged ahead of time. Yes the controllers consider the airlines. I was told to abort a landing at SBA one night as an airliner was behind me even though I was on final.

A 2-min spacing is typical. It, however, is hard to maintain that between a small Cessna and a fast 737. In my case, was it about 1-min space or less at the B737 final? One thing I would say, the Salt Lake tower controller was nice friendly and professional.

Try this at Burbank, ca …. You’ll be circling for hours. Last I flew into Burbank, in a Berch 36, they had me on final at 140 and hard on brakes to exit fast.
@jamesqu20003 ай бұрын
140, wow. You fly like a jet! I understand we GA pilots shall be good citizens in busy airports, and also understand the difficulties from ATC perspective, at the same time we still need to consider our safety. :-). Do our best to balance the speed and safety. Don’t make too much headache to ATCs. I find all ATCs are very helpful from my experience

Funny enough, 13 years ago in Burbank, there were 6 of us (in six 172s) doing aerial imagery work out of there. The controllers accommodated all 6 of us doing pattern work there for half an hour (we were just putting time in the Hobbs because our company required us to show we "scouted" on a day we couldn't image). Basically cloverleafs landing on runway 8 then 15 then 8 then 15 etc and they even managed to fit in UPS landing in between our fuckery. That being said, it sounded like they were training a new controller and were actually happy to give him the tough experience of dealing with us. Maybe things are busier now but they were still busy back then as I remember.

I have to disagree with all of these comments. The tower controller shouldn’t have let you turn base and cut it that close. James, I’m gonna say this as nice as possible. You had no business being at salt lake. Not good radio calls, you failed to say your tail number multiple times. There was no reason to report short final and ask for a wind check on short final, pay attention to what they tell you in the pattern. You should’ve followed the interstate instead of saying you can turn base. This was a runway incursion or worse waiting to happen.

He said he could turn base, they cleared him to, and he did so immediately. How would this be a runway incursion?

@connorkelly121. Thanks for ur honest comments. Pilot is always learning. I shared a few thoughts with you, looking for good comments for improvement. Based in northern Virginia KJYO, planed a 3-wk flight trip to Utah. Took the south route cross Rocky Mountain. On the return trip, planed north route cross Rocky. Salt Lake City , follow I-80 east out at 12500ft to SD. OGD was my first choice at Salt Lake City, but saw some challenges on departure, fly 30 miles next to mountains before I-80. The I-80 is close to SLC. One comment on reporting “short final”, I knew it is unnecessary that I had been cleared to land. Some the delta was pretty close, I thought it is good idea self report my position, situation awareness for delta pilot. As far as I requested “make left base turn to land”, my thought was controller would do his job to maintain separation, I can always request. That being said, that was my first long xc trip cross Rocky, did a lot of homework prior to, but looking for all of your suggestions for future improvement. Thx

@@megadavis5377 thanks for ur comments. I followed controller instructions. I knew the delta was pretty close, for situation awareness, I announced my short final, which was not necessary, the intention is to have delta pilot aware of my position.

It’s kind of bulls**t that tower would put this kind of pressure on a pilot that currently “owns” the runway. He received a landing clearance without any LAHSO. That entire runway belongs to him until he clears.
