Batteries can and will leak(All brands), but they usually leak when left in devices for a prolonged period of time with little or no use, or when exposed to heat. Use them, then lose them, or just leave them out of the device if you don't intend on using the device.

Yes, it is important to remove batteries from things that my sit unused for quite some time, even the best can leak and damage the battery box. I used to be in the electronics business and I saw a few that the battery boxes were virtually destroyed by leaking batteries, not common but it happens. Removing the batteries when not in use prevents the problem. As an example I have some battery powered stuff that is only used about 4 months a year, so I remove the batteries during the off season to prevent damage.

Occassionally, dollar stores buy huge pallets of name brand products, particularly dollar TREE, then they distribute these items throughout their chain. I recently purchased multiple 7 year bulbs, each for one dollar - compare that with Home Depot price. I also buy TP at Dollar tree and all my cleaning products. 4 rolls of TP = 1$. Paper layers are not as thick as say, Charmin, but I dont care; I can buy 8x as much TP at Dollar Tree for same price as ONE 12 roll pckg of Charmin elsewhere. And ALL of their greeting cards, gift wrap, and gift bags are 1$ - BEAUTIFUL selections year round. It's short sighted to pay premium for any paper product that will be thrown out.

Part of what I think about when buying batteries is which battery is more likely to leak. And, if it does, will the company that made the battery reimburse you for the damage? The cheap batteries do very well for low drain devices and you can about the same amount of energy. When you are going with alkaline or any same-chemical batteries, weight is the key to energy density, especially with low drain applications. However, when it comes to high drain applications, the physical construction inside the cell is key. If you use normal alkalines in a very high drain device, they will die VERY quickly.

I just went to my local Dollar Tree and raided their battery isle after seeing this video (and other videos on KZbin that came to same conclusion). BTW, Dollar Tree carries two different Sunbeam AA batteries. The one in this video is black and red, but they carry one that is white and red labeled "super heavy duty." Sunbeam claims the black and reds are better for "high drain" devices and the white and reds are better for low drain. I would be interested in seeing the testing of the "super heavy duty" alkalines here. They are even cheaper than the black and reds.

You can get Eveready Energizer batteries for a lot less than a dollar each. If you buy them in a 24 or 48 pack they are substantially less per battery although the larger packages don't necessarily equate to cheaper cost per battery. The Sunbeam batteries are only available in the 4 pack at the dollar stores. I tried to Sunbeam batteries in my flashlights at work and found them to be very unreliable in that my light would be shining brightly one moment and would not come on the next moment. One of the batteries at just suddenly died. Even when they did not suddenly die I found them not to last nearly as long as Duracell or Eveready. I've never had and Eveready or Duracell all of a sudden die on me. This could be the result of a bad batch of Sunbeam batteries so your results may be different than mine. ACDelco seems to make a very good battery I have been using them recently at the cost of $0.22 per battery

Went into the garage and checked a pack about 1 year old. Same story. I think disposable cells are a total waste of money for gaming and that NIMH cells (ULSD) should be used. Ikea sells re-branded Eneloops for 1.25 a piece (4 for 4.99) 2450 ULSD and a charger for like 1.99. A superb deal.
@electronicsNmore6 жыл бұрын
Rather than charge the NIMH, I'd spend $5 on 20 AA's shown in this video.
@tarstarkusz6 жыл бұрын
Eneloops last a good 5 years and hundreds of charge cycles. There is simply no more economical use of batteries. In addition, they can be used in very high drain applications where these primary cells really can't. Basically for $7, you can supply your game controllers for the next 5 years.

Better battery chargers charge single batteries one at a time ( or any amount up to 4 cells total). Each charging position has its own individual led to monitor the charging status. Google Sony or Maha brand chargers.
@rantalbott69636 жыл бұрын
But the converter would cost more than all the rest of the electronics in something simple like a flashlight. So they're not going to do it when the average consumer is probably going to choose the $3.99 model over a $4.99 model that's bulkier because it uses 4 batteries, even if it has somewhat better run time per charge. Based on a recommendation from Wirecutters, I recently bought a Panasonic BQ-CC17. There was a really good package deal with 4 AAs on Amazon at the time, so it only cost about $10. It does 4 cells individually, and slow-charges them, so you'll get a lot more cycles out of the batteries. I second Randy's suggestion about Maha: I have one that I've been using for about 15 years, that does 1-4 cells individually, and charges either fast or slow. It's also revived a couple of cells that the Panasonic said were too dead to charge. But I think they're up in the $30-40 price range now (I got it cheap when they were young and trying to buy market share). It's really important to get a charger that does the cells individually, because the slight differences from cell to cell means that usually one will wind up slightly overcharged, and one slightly under, if you charge them in series. That shortens their life.

You should use Duracell instead of Energizer. Duracell are the worst MEGA popular brand name that leaks more offen than the alcheapo Dollar Store's product batteries. You should do a leakage test as well.

The biggest mistake is buying those "heavy duty" non-alkaline batteries. Have you tested the new Sunbeam "platinum" or whatever they're calling them? Dollar Tree sells them now, too, only you get 2 instead of 4...
@electronicsNmore7 жыл бұрын
biostemm Funny you said that, I saw them yesterday. They are called Sunbeam Alkaline Ultimate.
@biostemm7 жыл бұрын
I picked up a pair for my electric toothbrush, but didn't notice any significant increase in lifespan - definitely not twice the life of getting 4 alkalines instead, (but that's just my anecdotal experience).

still cheap batteries more likely to leak and destroy your devices so much rather pay a bit extra for a quality battery even if it dont make sense performance wise

POINTS. 1. Don't buy Heavyduty at dollar store. IT's zinc chloride or carbon zinc. Not good as alkaline. 2. Kirklands do ok. www.nbc12.com/story/18276282/which-batteries-last-longest/

Yes, heavy duty batteries at the dollar store aren't good, only the alkaline batteries. Kirkland batteries rate very high. Thanks for watching!

Nice test but I would have a little more confidence in your results if you had used more than 1 battery of each brand, say 5 batteries from 5 different packages of each, and then averaged their results. Consistent performance is a major component of quality and I really wonder if the cheaper batteries would consistently perform as well as the Energizer. It would be interesting to see. Again, nice work. (But your nice work would present so much more professionally using a spreadsheet. I think you're doing yourself a disservice, but that's just me talking)

I figured the batteries should all be extremely similar from the same manufacturer.....which they should be. I don't have a printer. The video was made while away. Thanks for watching!
@rantalbott69636 жыл бұрын
"should be" doesn't necessarily mean "are". In addition to those stupid bunny commercials, I expect that the higher price for Energizers is also paying for better QC, and better case materials and seals on the cells (fewer leaks). I think there's also a very good chance that they're doing slightly different chemistry for a longer shelf life (lower self-discharge) because of the way the big brands are offering guarantees now. A lower internal resistance would also mean less waste heat, and longer life, under really heavy loads (like motorized toys). I don't want to denigrate your work, either, but Paul does have a point: what you did was useful (and surprising: I also assumed the cheapies wouldn't come as close as they did), but it doesn't tell us whether you just happened to get lucky with the particular batch you bought. If you ever do feel like running some automated tests (of other batteries, or anything else), you can do a plot to the PC screen, and either insert a screenshot into the video with an editor, or even just record it with the camera if there's no sync problem (sometimes there are weird artifacts if the camera and monitor aren't compatible). Thanks for doing and sharing this.

Take up the slack yourself. Conduct the tests, enter into spreadsheet, create speech and videotape it, then post to public - all for free, and out of the goodness of your generous ol' heart. Whereas the select few ACT (and then SHARE) their motivations, others just supply lip service.

I bought dollar store batteries and nine months later when I went to use them they were dead. After this happened three times i decided to shift to Energizer & Duracell and it wasn't a problem. The dollar stores weren't selling their batteries very fast so they were getting old on the shelf. To keep their prices low they kept them there rather than disposing of them at a loss. I still buy dollar store batteries if I need some to use right away, but I don't buy them as back ups.
@electronicsNmore6 жыл бұрын
I had them in packages a year also, no issues.
@ScorpionRegent6 жыл бұрын
electronicsNmore Different stores move different things, that's why it's always good to have a date on the package. It is also possible I got some out of a bad production run. Dollar stores are known for unloading merchandise that is not top shelf. What do you want for a dollar? Buying things at a lower price is just another form of gambling. What is life without adventure? Cheers!

I am going to disagree with this test as its not really a real world test. If you had ran this in an on/off condition then I might be willing to agree more but I can't think of anything (other than a clock) that is constantly drawing current from AA batteries, or at least that I use. I work at a battery store and will agree between most brands there isn't much of a difference but the dollar store alkaline batteries are usually garbage but thats just my experience. Plus I have pulled out badly corroded sunbeam and energizer batteries from peoples stuff.
@electronicsNmore7 жыл бұрын
You can disagree, but the test was highly accurate, and the batteries did very well. If you use batteries(like a gamer, or in a high drain device), then I just saved people a lot of money over time. People that hardly use batteries will have little interest in this video. Like I said, all batteries can leak.
@MegaTroIl7 жыл бұрын
I mean, electronicsNmore just gave us test results, and you're giving us anecdotes, I think he's winning this one. You have to give data to back up your claim, and he just gave data to back up his claim, while you are more or less telling a story, backing it with unconfirmed ethos.
@old_guard24312 жыл бұрын
I think this is a good point, if made a bit too forcefully. I also would be interested in the results of such a test, particularly in light of the Sunbeam battery’s mixed performance. But there is a cost-benefit calculation that comes into play here: varying the load and cycles, and also setting up equipment to do the switching and record the results. It is hard enough to get a fair return for time and expense related to KZbin video production.
