I've switched from 2015 Specialized Tarmac sport to 2018 Giant TCR advanced 2 (the exact same model shown on your video) and first i gotta say i love them both. but i felt more race oriented feel on the TCR. it's stiffness and responsiveness is just stunning while the Tarmac gave me more stable and refined riding. i didn't like the shape of stock saddle and handlebar on the TCR, but it's just personal preference and most people change them anyway. overall the TCR is the best race bike i've ridden.

Noticed your comment and looking at doing exactly the same! Have a sl4 tarmac sport (entry-level) and was looking at upgrading to disc model, and the tcr 1 disc gives so much better equipment level compared to Specialized for similar money. How did you find the change? Did you go smaller frame on the tcr as the reach is so long? Is it as comfortable as the tarmac? Thank you!

Mine is cheaper than the cheap one: 2017 TCR Advanced 3. All the same as the cheap one in the video, but with Tiagra. I would gladly have paid 150€ more for the 105 version (Advanced 2), but I liked the color scheme on the Advance 3 much (Matt black, grey and fluo green) better, so I went with it. Definantely best bang for my buck I could ever find. I am indeed looking to upgrade to 105 now, in order to be able to fit a 4iiii power meter (without looking totally bodgy with a 105 left crank arm on a Tiagra crank and full Tiagra groupset :p), but it's ok, because I can keep the Tiagra, as well as the wheels (which I have already upgraded) and be one old Alloy frame away from having a preety decent second bike :)

Good video. I'm buying my first road bike soon and the decision that's hard for me is 105 vs Ultegra. Can't deny the value of some 105 bikes, but the 2018 Ultegra has those way sleeker hoods The TCR and Ultimate's lowest spec option for discs is Ultegra, so that might force my choice. The price difference is significant but so is the braking difference
@casefarley5744
@casefarley5744 6 жыл бұрын
Rode the 105 and the ultegra disc groupsets and the new R8020 groupset is far superior to the latest 105. Buy the Ultegra if you can afford it. You will be glad you did. I was shocked how much better the ultegra was. The feel at the lever and the shifting is appreciably better, plus the brakes are easier to bleed.
@edkrassenstein5534
@edkrassenstein5534 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the advice. Ultegra costs about $1000 more, but you also get carbon rims and discs so the value is there. I always feel like it's a lot of money, then I look at the full range and remember it's still less than 1/4 of the cost of some pro bikes. I can't even get an Ultimate for at least another 2 months so I've got the time to save. Patience with my purchasing now will payoff in the years and thousands of miles in the future
@casefarley5744
@casefarley5744 6 жыл бұрын
It is a lot of money. The ultegra 8020 disc groupset is about $1200 right now if you buy it off the shelf, so even if you could get the same frameset with disc at a lower price point and upgrade as the parts wear you would still spend a lot of extra money. Your patience will be rewarded, and if you can swing it then I highly recommend it. Buy the bike that you want to ride, and you will always be happy with it.

You see folks like Sygon trying to justify spending 5 times the money on some name. They say, it's advanced composite, but, how can you tell? I basically see the same frame but with slightly lighter groupset. A kilo shed on bodyweight is a better bang for your buck than spending 6k pounds extra. I just can't justify it. Look, the lowself esteem in all these fat old balding middleaged IT specialist riding around town is beyong words. And they always want to tell you, something is wrong with yout fit or you're too far behind technologically. A good 105 groupset is more than overkill for an average Joe. If you ain't a pro, you got no business around 8k bikes. It's like driving around in a Porsche GT3 911 and you've never raced or be at the circuit a day in your life.

So... If you do the weight of 105 - D-a = actual weight diff of the frame + wheels. Not sure they had the specs of the wheelset, but like same equation = frame diff. I mean... groupset and wheels can always be upgraded.. but usually you re-use your frame. Would be interesting.

I know if I had the money for the more expensive bike, but I bought the cheap one, I would regret not having the much smoother shifting of Dura Ace, the noticeably lighter frame/group set/wheels, and the power meter. I would indeed end up buying the Zipps (add $2500) and the power meter (add at least $1,000). And still, every time I hit a rough patch of road, I would wonder if the flexy seat post would be much better. But I'm a brat.

The real point is that Giant have "nailed it" with the TCR geometry and then they've offered this excellent geometry to a broad range of rider tastes and budgets. A bike's "worth" is specific to the individual. I honestly feel that going on about adding super aero wheels to a TCR is missing the point because the TCR is first and foremost a brilliant climbing bike. If you want to talk aero - do this review based on the Propel. Gram pinching is ultimately why you pay the big bucks for a high spec TCR and 1.5kg is certainly something an elite rider would grab with both hands. Outside of elite riders, people will buy a Rolex or a TAG over a Timex because they can and they like it. To be brutally honest you may as well do a comparison of wheels and group sets and ask the value question (something that's been done many times) ... most of the big brand makes offer a range of levels for a specific model, plus you'll see exotic frames dressed in Ultegra because the rider doesn't see a marginal benefit in going to Dura-Ace. Lastly I doubt anyone goes shopping with $7K in their pocket asking themselves "1xUber_TCR or 5xTCR or (1xTCR+1xMTB) or (1xTCR+Bomb_Car)?" so I personally kinda this this video was a bit of a time waster (for me) :(

I’m enjoying the bike so far kzbin.infoUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA My only real complaints are the brakes and the pedals. I feel like a bike designed for bigger people should have much larger pedals and more heavy duty brakes. I’ve only gotten two really good rides out of it, minimal downhill action, and the brakes feel like they’re already going out. A larger person has more momentum, so I think this wasn’t thought through very well. Also, I wear size 13-14 wide shoes. My feet cramp up on these pedals that are clearly made for smaller feet. Since I’m not a pro rider (and I don’t think many are who purchase this bike) I don’t think that the straps on the pedal are necessary at all. None of this takes away from the enjoyment I get from riding, however. I’ll just head to a bike shop to improve on a few things.

I agree 200% - bike value is completely subjective. So, what is the bike value calc good for? Its good when there is a large range of bikes with different weights and prices, it creates a starting point to work from. Thanks for your comment.

yeah i guess i meant more when comparing bikes bikes at such different prices. When comparing a lot of bikes closer in price the score would make a lot more sense. Either way loving the videos man.

Having an expensive bikes is the same as buying a supercar, the buyer may never get to extract the full potential of it but at least he earns all the admiration and jealousy. However, if i lose to a superbike it won't be a shame on me, but if i can win a superbike with a cheaper bike that will be my pride. Story ends, and I'm gonna buy TCR Advance 2 next week to start hunting down those superbike riders.

@@livininchains4788 I love my TCR. Advanced 2. Although the look isn't as beautiful as some more expensive bikes but it performs very well. It will be my best companion for years to come. I'm always pushing my bike and myself to a limit as this is what a road bike design used to be

@@krixera78 yes. I had a few tcr's in my life. I had the tcr alu and tcr advanced sl in size m and m/l. Now I have a giant ocr with less slope. But I look forward for my next bike. Maybe a tcr again, or a cube litening c68 pre 2020 because of the 27.2 mm seat post. I want to ride my super duper comfortable canyon vcls seat post which isn't possible to add it to a tcr.

I was surprised that cheap full carbon tcr weights 8 kg.. Why its so heavy? Like aluminium one...
@4791_
@4791_ 2 жыл бұрын
It's because ot the wheels, saddle, handle bar and the chain. Also perhaps it's size medium. My TCR 2019 is 6.8kg. Replaced the wheels, saddle, handle bar and chain.

unless money is something you can burn the advanced is not worth it. I would be surprised if you saved 1 minute on the ride you mentioned. Maybe a few minutes on a really hilly ride for a few hours.

Yes, but Mazda MX-5s aren't UCI legal... and you'd probably be banned for life for mechanical doping. Seriously, have you never heard of diminishing gains? Everything IN THE WORLD works like that. Mass market, mid-range products are ALWAYS much better value than the absolute top of the range model. For starters, that Dura-Ace crankset with power meter costs £50 more than the whole of the cheap TCR put together, where as the 105 version costs less than £100. On day one of the tour de France, if you gave a pro rider a TCR Adv 2 when their competition are riding things like the Pinarello Dogma F10s (that, for over £9k only come with the standard, non-power meter cranks) they would probably tell you to take a flying f*** and go race on it yourself.

Dude, I like the first line of your comment, funny....You have taken the video very literally, I did make it with a large slice of irony pie. At the end of the day you buy the best you can afford to buy.... assuming you like the colour ;)
@sergarlantyrell7847
@sergarlantyrell7847 6 жыл бұрын
Bikotic that's very true. I paid way more than i planned because I hated the colour of the one I was originally looking at. So apparently colour is worse value for money... On a serious note, a friend of mine actually bought one of those TCR adv 2s as it was the best value for money of the lot (its a decent upgrade over the tiagra one and not much more expensive) and he didn't require anything more. But it doesn't mean that the top of the range ones don't have their place, but only if you're going to benefit from the marginal gains and can justify the greatly increased cost (or are sponsored by giant...).

I had a giant tcr advanced sl bike that I built up in single steps. I spent 3000 Euros to complete it with ultegra 6800 and fulcrum wheels. Now have a nice used scratchy old 250 Euro giant ocr alu frame with a mixed setup of older and newer shimano parts that I bought 10 years ago and an old 400 Euro cosmic elite wheelset. It's nice to ride it. Shortly I owned a r8000 ultegra for 600 Euros and soon I will buy me a fulcrum zero nite aluminum wheels set with ceramic bearings for 900 Euro. Maybe I will buy me a nice carbon frame if I want to. Maybe not. I like my old scratchy giant ocr. My bike is not for show, it's for riding the mountains until my legs are screaming. I go working and run my fuckin ass off for my money so why I should not buy me a nice bike when I have fun with that. You stingy people can spend your 300 bucks for a 12 kg brand new junk bike and be proud that you have stored some money. Don't spend too much money for your hobby. Better to blame people who do that and call them dumb. Is this the new "I spend less money than you idiot" mentality?
