THE NICEST AND MOST GENEROUS PEOPLE I HAVE EVER MET WERE FROM EASTERN KENTUCKY AND SOUTHWESTERN VIRGINIA. I HAVE ALWAYS FELT AT HOME THERE.

Loving this place. Where you can build roots. People lost their past. Need to build roots again.

I’m from Jersey, and I pass through this area sometimes on I 81 on my way to Florida. Stopped in Dublin, VA for the night one of these times. I have met by far the nicest people here, and they are very kind to anyone here! Genuinely felt welcomed here as an outsider. The scenery here is honestly so beautiful to look at. Especially in the morning, where driving on I 81 and seeing scenic areas, like Claytor Lake, are by far some of the most beautiful and peaceful places I’ve seen in my life. Honestly, this place is the hidden gem of America. One of the most perfect areas in the nation. I look very forward to coming to Southwestern Virginia again soon!

Just moved here couple years ago from nj and couldn't be happier... great people, love my neighbors and neighborhood pets... great welcoming community and schools... the views are not doing justice in the photos or videos... actually breath taking at times... into motorcycles? take ride down the dragons back! there are tons of atv trails, archery, gun, fishing, hiking, and rafting clubs... and don't forget to look for sasquach... I found it at flag rock park lol... love this peaceful place I now love to call home...

It is very beautiful and peaceful out in Southwest Virginia. A lot of the people out in Southwest Virginia are decendant from Irish and Scotish immigrants.

IN TRUTH…..NOT PROPAGANDA……, Though geographically beautiful, it is becoming very trashy. It’s truly spreading like a disease. If you appreciate looking at beautiful scenery outdoors, well kept farms, properties, well kept homes , communities , lawns and neighborhoods, this place may not be for you. Though pictures and videos are showing beautiful places , telling of music , people and serene country life, they are not showing you the reality of things. Backroads are being completely littered with trash and homes everywhere are becoming junky and grossly littered with trash, old cars and piles of junk. So if you cannot afford to live in a subdivision that is governed by an HOA, then be prepared to have your look at trashy neighbors . Local officials, especially in Russell County do not seem interested in enforcing clean living on the locals or addressing the litter being thrown out onto roadways. It’s sad that people are so blessed to live in such a geographically beautiful mountainous region full of beautiful lakes and streams and seem intent on seeing how fast they can destroy it’s beauty with their slack , lazy, unappreciation, for a clean , beautiful healthy environment. Also healthcare and hospitals in SouthWest Virginia and the Tri Cities is horrible. Underpaid, slow and poorly educated physicians and staff. If you’re looking for good healthcare, you will not find it here. Backroads once beautiful to enjoy are littered with locals trash as well as river banks and streams. They allow the summer grasses and weeds to hide some of it in the growing months , but the fall, winter and early spring reveal its undeniable ugly lazy truth. We need BETTER LOCAL AND STATE GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS THAT ARE ACTUALLY INTERESTED and who WILL KEEP, “ ALL”, of Virginia and Tennessee, “ TRULY AND COMPLETELY, CLEAN AND BEAUTIFUL”…..

Beautiful landscape but the people have too much of a "Hillbilly Flare" for me, I'd be hesitant to visit the area cause I'd feel my kind wouldn't be welcomed.

Southwest Virginia is very down to Earth overall. You should not fear racism whatsoever. At most you may be looked at curiously with no mean intention. Considering 98% of the people in this region are white. This is not because of racism or discrimination it is because of the economy. You see this region is nestled deep within the Appalachian Mountains meaning the land is very rugged. This makes it hard for towns to grow and makes it unfavorable to factories and other industries. The coal industry was the major employer of workers in this region up until the last decade when coal mines started to shut down due to lack of demand and regulations. This has caused a local economic recession causing many towns to fade and people to leave. It is very sad to see when you have lived here your entire life. Recently efforts have been made to appeal to tourists and share the great beauty of Southwest Virginia in hopes the economy can recover. Most people would likely welcome you to this region.

Trust me all sorts of people are welcome here. There’s one kid (his family was from somewhere in Asia?) who wore a banana costume to school every single day for God knows how long and everyone loves him. Also, most kids at my school are openly at least bisexual and really love people from other cultures. We might come off as racist with proffinf questions but it’s just because we’re curious. Most of the racism and homophobia is in the older folks and they’re pretty quite tbh.
