Few people come to Lisbon and don’t visit the Tower of Belem.
Belém Tower (Torre de Belém) is an imposing medieval defensive tower on the northern bank of the River Tagus and a symbol of Europe’s Age of Discovery.
It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and, since 2007, one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal.
Jerónimos Monastery
King Manuel first built a grand monastery in Belem, steps from the Tagus River, as a gesture of thanks to the Virgin Mary, who he believed had guided the voyagers safely. The construction of this monastery took over 100 years to build.
The Monument to the Discoveries comprises a group of sculptures representing the prow of a caravel (a small sailing ship constructed by the Portuguese to explore the Atlantic Ocean).
Prince Henry the Navigator leads the ship, and behind him are many other great Portuguese discoverers.
While walking through Lisbon’s Baixa toward Praça, do Rossio may notice a long line of tourists waiting on the stairs at Rua de Santa Justa, especially during the prime vacation months of July and August says that you are close to Santa Justa Lift. The attraction catching all this attention is the Santa Justa Lift. It’s an elaborately Gothic wrought-iron lift reaching seven stories high to a lookout for visitors to enjoy a stunning view over one of Lisbon’s central neighborhoods.
Sanctuary of Christ The King
Just like the famous Brazilian statue from which it takes inspiration, the Christ the King of Lisbon is a majestic statue representing the image of Christ outstretching his arms towards the city. It is visible from any point in the capital city and has a great panoramic location, the perfect place to photograph the city from above.
Miradouro de Santa Luzia
This romantic terrace by the church of Santa Luzia introduces visitors to Alfama.
(Alfama is Lisbon's most emblematic quarter and one of the most rewarding for walkers and photographers, thanks to its medieval alleys and outstanding views.) with a sweeping view over its house, churches, and the Tagus River.
Arco da Rua Augusta
Located at the northern end of Praça do Comércio on Rua Augusta in Lisbon by the River Tagus, the 19th-century Rua Augusta Arch (Arco da Rua Augusta) is a symbol of the Portuguese capital's recovery from the destruction of the 1755 earthquake. The arch was officially completed, though, only in 1875.
Sintra is the best day trip from Lisbon and one of Portugal's most impressive towns. The town contains the Pena Palace, the Castelo dos Mouros, the Palacio Nacional de Sintra, and over eight other grand villas open to the public.
