I enjoy both versions of "Gaslight" for different reasons. Altho' this version is perhaps a little more gruesome, but I find Charles Boyer's characterization a bit more sinister, than Anton Walbrook. He has this sneer that gives me shivers. And Angela Lansbury was also wonderful as the maid. In any event both are noteworthy and should be seen. Thanks for posting this wonderful film!

Isn`t it funny that the expression "to gaslight someone" is so frequently used in our society, yet most people are unaware that it originates from Patrick Hamilton's 1938 thriller play "Gas Light"? It is due to the adaptations in film that the term has become a household expression. The more well-known and famous film is probably the 1944 version with Ingrid Bergman, Charles Boyer, Angela Lansbury, and Joseph Cotton, but I like them both. Interestingly, for 80 years nobody cared to produce a newer version of the play to introduce it to younger generations, as it is often done with famous period pieces. Hamilton's work is a timeless masterpiece that remains relevant to this day. Its psychological themes are relatable to many of us, in one way or another. Thank you very much for uploading this gem, which I haven`t watched for decades. Greetings and Merry Christmas.

Both versions have their pros & cons. Angela Lansbery (19 yo at the time!) stands out over this maid...her cockney accent and acting really transported you to the period. With Charles Boyer I had a difficult time believing Ingrid would fall in love & married him. In Hitchocks version the noisy little old lady and deaf cook added imo, texture and depth to the piece.

(18 . VIII . 2024).
@lornahuddleston145329 күн бұрын
Absolutely true. The costumes are especially superior and much more accurate for the period piece. Beautiful detail. Hollywood used a more generic approach that just doesn't compete with this. I do like Charles Boyer though. And Joseph Cotten who's role was cut out of this rendition.
