I bought this set when it first came out in the UK it was £30 GBP. I remember some of the pressings were a little thin sounding and lacking bass, on the set that i had. Its nice to see it again 40 years later and in such beautiful condition.

Yes I agree on the bass now when spending a little more time with it. I’m still glad I have it. Sounds good but I will still try to find first pressings or very early and have these to compare too.

I have the matching 7" set that goes with that, never seen the LP set before, but I can tell from the graphics they go together. Til the end.

Had no idea there was a 7" box. I have to check that one out. Thanks!!

I bought that German box set new in the early 80s. I'm in California, so it was a mail order item from Blue Angel Inc in Virginia (they advertised regularly in the back pages of Trouser Press). I picked up similar box sets from them for The Who and Cream. I recall the price was surprisingly cheap.

My absolute favorite live album of Hendrix was Alan Douglas’s Jimi Hendrix Concerts album, released in 1982. It was the first Hendrix I ever bought and still listen to it, occasionally. I think some of the tracks can be found on the In the West compilation.

That looks like a thing of beauty- I’ve got most of those separately in 70’s pressings but that box looks beautiful! Shall need to keep an eye out for that in the U.K.

It’s a cool one indeed but I think many broke it up over the years. If you see it for a good price I would snag it up.

This looks like a great box! I am envious. German Polydor put out a very similar box set for the Who (called “Phases”) around the same time, and, IIRC, it was highly regarded and sought after by fans.

I have the 7" vinyl box set that looks exactly the same. I'll have to try and find this.

To the end as always ❤ I have been collecting Hendrix since the mid 90s (everything official and literally tons of boots, Alan Douglas Frankensteins, Curtis Knight you name it!) but this one slipped under my radar thus far. Complete boxsets in NM seem to go for something like 300 to 400€, tho. I am tempted :)
@SublimMedia7 ай бұрын
I don’t think it’s worth 300-400. I bet if you bide your time you can get it for 200 or maybe a little more. It’s a cool box and a lot of bang for the buck but I bet there is cooler and better sounding g versions in your collection.

I think Band of Gypsy's 2 should have been included also, I'm pretty sure that was Polydor.

Firstly, the "celebration" in 1980 was actually a commemoration of Jimi's passing in 1970 (i.e. the ten-year anniverssary of his death). That's simple mathematics. The UK version of this box contains one different record. To wit, the "Glora" maxi single is supplanted by the LP "Nine to the Universe" in that edition. The Australian pressing, meanwhile, comes housed in a different box, whilst the "Gloria" 12" and the "Band of Gypsys" LP contained therein likewise have different covers (the latter being a reproduction of the original British "puppets" sleeve). Those two editions contain the booklet, which features an Anglophone translation of the German text, but they do not boast a poster. All of this information is quite readily available. As far as the musical content of the box is concerned, I've always wondered why the decision was made to include live selections in the form of the "Isle of Wight" and "In the West" LPs instead of "Smash Hits" and "Rainbow Bridge". That was a bizarre move, in my opinion. The music contained in this box is thus _almost_ definitive - at least for the time of its release. However, it falls short due to the omission of those two records in favour of the concert recordings. An important Jimi Hendrix collection without "Purple Haze" or "Dolly Dagger"? Weird! Finally the posthumous LP with the black and white cover is entitled "War Heroes", not "War Horses".

My copy is also a German pressing, purchased around 1984 I think, but it is somewhat different. Perhaps a second pressing. It is in a box with a lid, not a slipcase, and there is no sticker on the front. It also does not include the poster. It looks like your copy has lined inner sleeves; mine has plain paper inners with no holes. The red Polydor labels are the same. Did you read this comment to the end? Just checking.

Oh. Cool. Yes or if this is the second? Well cool that you have it too. Great box. You are a true hero! I always read backwards so I started with that 😁

Is Rainbow Bridge not included? I think it was made by Reprise Records and not Polydor maybe that's why.

Yes I think you are right. Otherwise that seems like a record that should be included.

Appreciate the video, Interesting box for sure. In my opinion most of those compilations have been made obselete by the many Hendrix family official releases. Also some of the ones in box have been exposed for the questionable 'Frankenstein' production techniques used by Alan Douglas.

No I agree. My og of Axis is much more fat and dynamic. Pretty flat in sound. I compared to my 81 press of Ladyland and this sounded better. But I have no earlier to compare to. And I guess the extra discs outside of the studio once should be considered first pressings =)
