I've got to experience life in Lovozero village on Kola peninsula during a snowstorm and to take part in mass diving in the ice hole. Quite an adventure to dive in subzero water in the Russian Arctic!

Dignified and beautiful Women showing us your adventurous sides with positivity and professionalism. My back aches a bit from the last few snowstorms here in northern Wisconsin, but your portrayal of the snow and wind there make me feel thankful about the 15 inches or snow that we have now, and the shoveling of snow. I live in Texas. In the urban areas if we see clouds that might have ice in them, everything shuts down. Life on the farm or ranch in the rural areas are different. One has to take care of the land and animals, usually before one's self. I love your Vlogs. Seeing the real Russia through your eyes and giving your followers a view of the Russian people that silences the "Hollywood" stereotype.

Looks exactly like everyday life in the north of Sweden where we also usually have down to -40°C degrees and snow for 8 months a year. Only difference is that our houses look a bit different but we use the same machines, have the same approach to winter go ice bathing and have reindeers. Just imagine all that in Swedish language! 😉

In response to your experience of a light snow storm in America ... I am British, aged 53. I have noticed a trend over my lifetime of people becoming less able to deal with uncomfortable situations. When I was a child, we just walked to school in the snow if it snowed. Now, they declare an Emergency for it and close the schools! (Edited to add) ... many things that were in the range of "normal life" when I was a kid are now considered dangerous.

I live in Texas and basically the whole state falls apart when it snows because people down here aren’t used to the cold/winter. It’s very annoying because I dislike the heat and the 2 1/2 months we get of winter here comes and goes too fast!😣 I would love to learn a Cyrillic language and move to an Eastern European country (My family comes from Ukraine and Russia) where it actually gets cold!!!

Yep- Texan here too- when I lived in north Texas, the most snow I ever saw was about 10 inches and we were shut down for a week. It only got down to -4. 2 years ago practically the whole state shut down and the ice broke power lines and froze water, so lots of people were without any heat, power, or water for a week. I think we got around 5 inches of snow. In some places it took over a month for power lines to be replaced. I think we were out of school for 10 days total. My parents lost power at the ranch so their well froze. Mom had to go out several times a day to check the cows. She saved a new calf from A coyote waiting for it to freeze.

Most people may think that cold and dark Winter is depressing. But not in a video from Eli ! You had so much fun and you are beaming so much happiness in your videos. It is simply amazing and I love it. We used to cope quite well with snowstorms in Germany 30 years ago. But technology became more and more advanced and at the same time more fragile. Here in Northern Germany we hardly have any snow in Winter anymore but if it does snow for a while, public transport and other infrastructure quickly gets into trouble. Although I have never experienced shops being closed because of a snowstorm. I am afraid things will get worse with the introduction of all those electric cars. While I really like them and they are quiet and clean, electric batteries do not perform well in the cold and to make things worse, they need to use their precious power for heating as well. Here in South Carolina, we don’t do snow. The rare snowstorm shuts our town down completely. We have a snow plow. One snow plow. He didn’t realize the plow blade has to touch the ground to work. Y’all are tough people and I love learning about Russia from your videos! ❤️

Good video. Russia is similar to Canada in climate. We are northern people just like Russian people. Cold and snow do not stop us, however, there are times when children miss school because school buses are unable to navigate roads that are not plowed yet. A snowstorm is a good time to go for snowshoeing. And personally, I enjoy cold water so I, like many Canadians, enjoy immersion in cold water during wintertime. In Russia cold water enthusiasts are called Walrus. In Canada, Polar Bears. The Epiphany bathing is very interesting and it reflects the spirit of Russian people. Very interesting. Immersion in an ice hole is good. Thank you!

I live in western Washington state in the US. We receive very little snow in the low lands, and snow of any amount usually causes problems here. 2.5cm will close most schools. 10cm will close most everything else. Only on the west side of the state is this the case, mountains divide the state and the east side takes a lot more snow than the west and is rarely bothered by the snow.

Here in SE Virginia, the temperature got down to 25°F. The news said it would be terrible which caused a "locust" effect in the stores like Walmart, Food Lion, Target, and Aldi's. That night it snowed, the accumilation melted the next day with temps of 50°F the next day then 60's F the following days.

Winter in Minnesota is similar to winter in Russia. Typically everything stays open. Every type of snow removal equipment ever made exists there. There are even dips in the lakes on January 1st.

I live in the UK. Eli But if we get 25 mm of snow, the whole place shuts down. No one goes to school, no 1 goes to work. They just stay in there houses. Just came across your channel on my Roku. Excellent channel. I agree with furious guy. Probably the best KZbin channel on the unique side of Russia traveling and everyday exploring I've seen I really appreciate the other channels that explore the day to day in cities and such but yours head something special and deeply revealing about all the different cultures and environments. I live in Sask, Canada. During blizzards, everything stays open. Public transit, schools, shops, etc. Although, if it were to drop to -40°C or below, school busses will not run, for obvious reasons. But everything remains open.

I remember winters in elementary school in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Our country school half-buried these huge tractor tires in the ground and we would scramble to get inside these tires to get out of the cold. Someone else usually got there first 😂 it was torture.

I live in himalayan mountains ..here the minimum temp we often experience is around -11°c ....i cant imagine to live in -50 or above..even in top of everest its around -30 to -40 ...btw i love winters and your vlog..your storytelling is just amazing ♥️

I'm from UK and we never get such snow storms here as i've just seen in your video. As soon we get severe weather warnings the public starts panicking, sometimes schools completely shut down and you see a signifucant reduction in public transport. Eli, I live in a small city in south of Canada. Even in "the south" our daily activities are controlled by the snow. Today is Saturday. I have spent 3 hours today shoveling snow off my walk and driveway. Yesterday, I spent 3 hours shoveling snow from my walk and driveway. Snow is a way of life - until the middle of March. You learn to accept it and carry on.

Elina, the snow machines are called plow trunks in the U.S. For safety reasons, public schools are closed during snowstorms. Even with 3 to 4 inches of snow forecast, schools will close. They worry about bad road conditions that would cause accidents. Your videos are very interesting. Thanks for taking us around Russia. You have journeyed into areas which are less travelled. Bravo!

Ellie, you and your friend are brave to dip yourselves into the freezing cold water outside in the freezing cold winter. I don't even like cold showers forget about cold bathing. As for the winter storms we get them here too in Canada. Some times there would be a snow day for the kids to not go to school but the adults have to go to work regardless of the snowstorm outside if they want money to pay for their rent and pay their bills and buy groceries to feed the family.

I came to Montreal Quebec Canada in October 11th 1972 from Azores Portugal and i was 7 years old. I had never seen a snow storm even less just snow hehe. In 1972 was one of the years where there was sooo much snow for moderate big city. in the few years that followed there was also much snow, almost as much but 1972 people where using snow mobiles in the city and it was the last time that happened. We have such big snow storms and it can get to the - 40s Celsius and sometimes it has been little colder but on average we gete around -20 to -35 Celsius on winters. Snow blowers everywhere all the cars are covered deep in snow before dawn sometimes we just can't see much even less then 3 to 4 feet in big storms. At the beginning of winter it's beautiful. Oh there is so much to say but winter is just wonderful for those who love it. i love it when walking in nature when it's so white all over... Could say so much more but anyone can see it on web now. When I was 16, I had friends with a house by a lake. They had a sauna and kept a hole in the ice to dive in after a very hot sauna (190F). We did this 3 times before bed and slept very well after. We would take a very cold glass of wine into the sauna. We had the same feeling after the cold dip. You felt warm even though no clothing and sitting outside for a few minutes. Now I have a sauna in my home, but it is not as good without the hole in the ice.

This was one of the most interesting and humorous videos yet. I remember blizzards like the one in this video when I was a kid living in New England in the 1960s and 70s. Snow was no big deal; you just basically put snow chains on your tires and went about your business. Living in Florida now, I think it hasn't snowed here in maybe 45 years.

That's funny. When my grandparents first moved from New Hampshire to Florida in 1990 or so, it snowed in Saint Augustine! It turned to rain about 3 feet off of the ground. My grandpa said, "That's it, we have to move south, it's too cold up here!"

Keep it up, Eli. Best Russian KZbinr so far. Your approach to your culture and the way you show your country is really informative. BTW, I would take the cold bath. I just wouldn't take it in a lake because I know for certain that there are currents, and I know tragedies have happened during those baths, some of them with small children watching their mother disappear under the ice, which was as tragic as anything can be. Good for those who dip in the freezing water, just make sure to play it safe. We have just one life.

Fun fact: they literally have people with flamethrowers to melt the MAX rails because Portland was to cheap to buy the self heating option. That's why the MAX shuts down so often in winter, particularly on Hawthorne bridge.

I absolutely love ❤ this video. I lived like that in Alaska. On glaciers I would wash up in glacier water. Some places have cold pools that I've tried. Nothing compares to real life experiences. These people are fabulous in their videos. Bless you all.

When I lived in Iowa (the Northern Great Plains of the US) NOTHING shut down for winter weather just like there. I'm sure our weather was close but we were nowhere near the Arctic Circle. However, there was NOTHING to stop the big freezing blasts and blizzards coming down from Canada. So we were kinda sorta on par with you. I live in the mountains of east Tennessee and here, most everything shuts down for extreme cold with precipitation. Here, the mountains are the issue as so many roads never see sunlight during the winter. So you can be driving just fine on a mildly cold day and all of sudden you hit one of those shaded spots which is pure ice and there is nowhere to go other than into the side of the mountain or down the side of the mountain. Great stuff as always and yes, if I'm ever there in Russia on Jan 19th and your there to coach me, I'll take the plunge! Praise God!

Elina - I'm from Michigan (USA) and we used to have 6 to 8 inch snow as a youngster, but not much snow the past maybe 10 years. Don't know why, but it was delightful to see your fantastic water dipping in the cold weather. Looks like fun ... er, Chilly Fun. Lovely video. Thanks for sharing. -Carey

Thank you for your documentation from Kola Peninsula. If it is snowing hard in Switzerland, we have usually Traffic shut down. The local government sends plowing machines to get the snow and ice away from ways and streets. But on private roads and ways, we have to clean them.

In Estonia we had snowstorm on 29th of January. Nothing like that of course. Rescue service warned people not to drive without urgent need. When I went home after friends birthday, basically snow level was little lower than knees. So I had to dig out my car (and some of the road just before the main road) to get home from village. Always good idea to keep big shovel in the trunk. Most of the people still go to work and school. And every shop is still open. But snowstorms like this are quite rare nowadays - when I was younger there used to be more (and heavier), and nothing stopped people from going to school or work even when basically my knees were under the snow on the sidewalk. Whenever I see snowstorms in some other countries (where even a little bit of snow will close the roads), I think this as a perfectly driveable/walkable winter weather. 😀

I lived in Canada for about 10 years on and off; yes it was cold (-42C). But before that I was in the southern part of France where 5 centimeters of snow was a disaster. Now I am in Lebanon where even 2 cm of rain blocked everything (in the cities)

Hey Eli we didn't have snow in my city of Zagreb for the past few years due to global warming. When I was little it was so much fun and really made me love and enjoy winter. Now when there is no snow I don't even feel it is winter. Thank You for showing us how it is in your country.

I am also from Croatia, from a small town less than 100 kilometres from Zagreb. I remember when I was 5 years old, snow would fall that was literally as high as 5 years old me. I remember how I shovelled my way to my kind, late elderly neighbour just so I could visit her....ahhh sweet memories. Every winter I would go sledding with my sister, ever year I would shovel snow but I didn't mind it. And then it all changed. Snow is rare and when it happens, it usually ends with the first traces of sun. The sun scorches so hot that it will melt snow very quickly. It baffles me for I am not an expert and I do not know why this happens, it's almost like the sun became hotter over the years, maybe it's connected to the ozone layer. I have vivid memories of snow glowing beautifully under sun, like fine white crystal. But those are memories from my childhood. A very distant memories and something that I hope to see once again. It is one of many reasons why I hope to visit Russia in colder months.
