Alex McAuliff and the evidence it’s true because the Bible says so. Or god works in mysterious ways along with god is unseen and can’t be proven with we can’t understand his ways. Ok so a circular argument followed by believing in something you can’t understand, know or discover through sciences or senses. How exactly do you get yourself to believe something that’s unknowable, unable to understand, unable to provide credible testable evidence? How do you give up everything that connects us to reality? Now that I do not understand.

@Naukumaija Mau-mau Well, to be fair, some religious folks are nearly sane, but when you combine religion with other forms of tribalism, nationalism, racism, sexism, it is almost almost always malignant. Mind you those other tribalisms can be quite malignant on their own, as can religion. What motivates all of them is the desire to have an elevated position of some hierarchy, even if that hierarchy is fictitious. Those who are average or below average in their perceived worlds are quite likely to claim some sort of superiority.
@hisxmark

@Naukumaija Mau-mau Well, once I realized that religion was a crock (The second grade, when Sister Raymond Francis, brought up "original sin" and "blood atonement"!) I pretty much lost my fear of hell, although I was rational enough to go along to get along. So I became an acolyte (altar boy) and later a choir boy, and learned my Latin patter, which I can still recite. I think most who give up religion do, eventually, give up hell too, although we might regret having no place to consign annoying hypocrites.

what theists need to realize is that Matt and many of the other cohosts represent exactly how we atheists feel about your tired arguments. show some respect and answer a question or please go the hell away, which is exactly why Matt shuts you down or hangs up. and we applaud. if you can’t prove what you believe, then stop trying to tell other people what to do with their lives or stop supporting those that do in the name of your common religion.

A great many people don't have the intellectual capacity for critical thinking in addition to being taught not to question/think. So many people can accept contradictions with no problem. Theism is a mental model/concept of the world which then replaces the world as reality. Instead of referring to the world for what is real, one just refers to their model.

I knew a man who was born and raised in Okinawa, Japan and immigrated to Canada who had a personal experience with the Goddess, Amaterasu, when he was a child where she saved his life. He swears that this happened. I also know someone who claims they spoke directly to Jesus about becoming a musician and spreading the word of Christ, granted 18 years later and he's still broke and playing music at retirement homes, but regardless, They both had spiritual experiences of their respective Gods. I'm willing the bet they each think the other one is mistaken. I happen to think they're both mistaken. I have an uncle that used to be Baptist and always said he spoke directly to God on several occasions. When he became an Atheist I asked him what could have caused him to think he was speaking to God, he answered "Oh that? Yeah, I completely made that up for attention. It worked, sadly, that's why I kept making those stories up" So you see how personal revelation is completely useless as evidence?

As you say provide a mechanism to be able to tell the difference between a real encounter with the holy spirit and a false one.Believers are so convinced they are right and yet they cannot answer the question. The trouble is with the spiritual experience is that up to now no one can prove any evidence of a spiritual experience. Why won't they admit it.

Jose has experienced something and it has been explained to him in terms of the Holy Spirit. It is like speaking in tongues. If it is mind games then what we need is to take away the interpretation or projection and see the phenomenon for what it really is. It has got to be worth the effort, if only I had the time.

To us, your belief in god(s) is *EXACTLY* the same as believing you have imaginary cats circling your legs and you have taken it upong yourselves to convince us that your imaginary cats exist. Good luck with that.

Two decades ago I was sued by a hospital for $5,700. In the pretrial hearing, the Judge kept interrupting what I thought was a well prepared and cogent argument I had rehearsed thoroughly in the time leading up to the hearing. Finally, frustrated and disgusted, I told the Judge that $5,700 was a lot of money, that I was certain I did not owe it, and I would fully appreciate 10 minutes of uninterrupted time to make my argument. To his credit, he agreed. The hack attorney for the plaintiff, tried to interrupt me, but the Judge stopped him every time. When I was done, the Judge apologized for having interrupted the first time around and called my argument the best job of lawyering he had heard in a long time. He admitted to having become so tired of hearing the same old cliched excuses from defendants that he'd simply stopped listening. Rather than direct a verdict in favor of the hospital, he set a date for a trial while suggestively indicating that I'd have no problem winning the case. I received a letter from the plaintiff later that week stating that they'd decided to drop the lawsuit. My point? I wish Matt would allow the callers a reasonable amount of uninterrupted time in which to state their case. I seriously doubt any of their arguments would lead to revelation, but Matt's need to control every conversation robs the listeners of hearing some seriously lunatic rants. And it's unfair to the caller. He assumes to know where every caller is going with their arguments, as had the Judge, at first, in my pretrial hearing. I'm an atheist. I understand that Matt is brilliant, but am I alone in wanting to hear what the callers have to say, in full?

Not particularly. If you start the conversation by wanting to prove god is real through a personal experience, it's easy to quickly shut that down as...not everybody in a mental institute can be Elvis. Just because you feel something, doesn't make any of it true. If it takes 10 minutes for someone to finally admit that, there's not much hope for the rest. But yea i agree to a degree

It is regrettable how people in “modern society “ continue to confuse their religious faith with verifiable facts, when religion is by definition-faith. But then they have been wrongly taught that religion is fact since they were children, often becoming an important part of their identity, world view, and culture .

I was once having a bath and heard my parents talking while my head was underwater. I couldn't make out the words because the water blurred sound but I was sure I was hearing two voices in conversation. So sure was I that as I was stepping out the bathroom, I began speaking to them as I headed toward the living room. At this point, I could no longer hear them but as still convinced I'd heard them. I stepped into the living room and no-one was there. I checked the rest of the apartment. They were nowhere to be found. Just then the front door opened and in they walk. It turns out that the conversation I was sure I'd heard was just water noises. For some reason, I detected a pattern that sounded like a conservation and latched onto it. All these experiences with "the holy spirit" sound remarkably like my experience.

I think a lot of these holy spirit experiences are being caught up in the moment. When you see faith healing people are so swept up in the emotion of the event. Natural events like this occur too. When rioting broke out in the UK, people who were normal law abiding citizens acted in ways they never thought they could (feeling bad and returning the loot the following day). They described that they were caught up in the mob mentality and started behaving like others around them. I think every holy spirit experience can be boiled down to the above, emotional impulses and "wanting" to believe (I've been there, I expect a lot of former theists have) and/or mental illness

We’re trying to point out that there’s a great big pitfall in the path of their logic, and they’re denying that it’s there, so we’re merely asking them to walk over the area with the pitfall to show us that it’s not actually there, but they jump over it, dance around it, but never actually do the thing!

@0:46: Because every other religion, cult and neopagan revival religion in the world has people who proclaim they have these exact same experiences vindicating their own personal belief as being true. The fact the US is where most people call from and the US is a Christian majority country religion wise means that very few Zoroastrians, Ásatrús, Hinduists or Shintoists get to call in but they have pretty much the exact same claims.

I get the idea that, as with most theist callers, Jose spends most of his tune around people that believe as he does and they are programmed to just accept what they are told by their religious authorities and to never actually think about it. Never question, never accept that there is other possibilities. Ergo, when they get asked to think, they can’t do it and they feel as if they are being picked on.
