ether is the kind of person that works under the necessary evil, simply because it's her job, and if she doesn't do it, they'll get someone else to do it for her. yet every time she shows up, she helps others out of this necesaary evil, or simply reveals the dark side of the ark to people more equipped to reject it, like she does here with the commander

I love how Ether is such the wildcard menace, makes her very interesting. She doesn't really fall in a like/dislike box for me though i guess i'd go with like if i had to pick one. The funny thing with this bond story, my issue was actually with the commander, though to be fair, this might be very early on in his story (Ether does say he's famous but i'm gonna ignore the wildcard). I get wanting others not to suffer and such but it's extremely shortsighted for someone in his position, i guess the assumption is that he knows he won't die, either regarding the experiment itself or Ether keeping him alive (and being the wildcard, I assume Ether is). I'm kind of surprised the commander hasn't tried to tank a rapture hit for a random nikke, i guess he isn't that level of protagonist densery.

This is just my own take on Ether, but if you consider her position as a Nikke and a Scientist working under Missilis, it's sort of understandable why she behave that way. What she does or what she couldn't do is decided by the higher ups. Sometimes that means sacrificing some Nikkes because its cheaper, if she don't agree with it and it haunts her, she will continue to suffer, so people who work under those kind of condition might train themselves to disconnect from empathy for certain things. Just like how a doctor need to accept that their patient might die on their operating table, sometimes its their fault, sometimes its not, and they need to be able to cope with that. And her confusing personality reflects this, it might hint that she was a kind person before she is broken by her job. When she is not under stress she is kind and caring but when she is stressed out, her worst nature comes forth, just like normal people. Good character writing, indeed
