That's may not be the exact answer.....top layer temp is quickly raised causing it to expand however below layer temp is still that of surrounding envt and hence will not expand.....glass being a brittle material has nowhere to go but to shatter into pieces..... if however it was ductile material it would have bent instead of shattering to pieces.

Unless the whole sheet of glass gets the exact same temperature at the exact same time the glass cannot keep up with the heat and so in the center where it’s nice and malleable the outside edges or not and therefore when the glass twists, it basically shatters itself via the shockwave of the initial transfer of energy. It really doesn’t matter what type of glass is put there, as long as the thickness of the glass doesn’t exceed the rate of heat radiation able to be transferred at one time then it will always break. Man I love physics.

The reason why the tempered glass breaks is because tempering is heat treating the glass and is a tedious process allowing for flexible and impact resistant glass. However, if a large amount of heat is added, the glass can actually lose its temper and become brittle.
