Grant, the reason why its not working is because of all the fuses, You need to take the fuses out and crush the pellets into a powder, then take the Powder and put it into a cup thats sealed with vent holes and it will burn like you want. The fuses are causing it to overheat and burn.

you need to leave them in the cardboard shell because the cardboard shell actually keeps the dye next to the accelerant that pushes the dye into the air. otherwise what you can try is removing all the fuses crushing them down into a powder and making your own small-size smoke bombs to go off in the series

if you want a huge smoke bomb, just make the mold by mixing sugar, flameble and meltble things/candle, dye in a pan. make sure its a cheap pan, because its a long-long journey to clean the pan afterwards

Why not do this again but remove all the fuses and place all the smoke powder into a CPVC tube sealed at both ends with a small hole on one side to put a fuse in. that way the pressure has nowhere to go except out the small hole forcing it all to burn slower and not as hot. Adding onto that, You could crunch up all the powder and reform it in a metal soup can and weld the lid with a small outflow on top. The smaller outflow allows the fuel to smolder instead of burn. It would prevent it from burning so fast if it was one big chunk, instead of small pellets with flow space in-between them. AND you could layer the new bigger pellet with colors so it shifts through them as it burns. but it might not burn evenly.

I believe this experiment would work better if you limit the air intake of your custom smoke bomb, in order to prevent the whole thing going up in flame. I suspect that's why the original smoke bombs were confined in a cardboard sphere. Also, the last smoke bomb seemed to work fine until the top of the aluminium shell blew off... you should use something more resistant than aluminium foil, or make a thicker shell.

Rémi Caron St-Pierre I think you have half the solution. The smoke bombs do need a choke to keep them from catching fire, and a removal of the fuses would reduce the amount of heart. Every fire has three parts, heat fuel and air. I think the best bet would be to use a single fuse in a plastic egg wrapped in foil.

Could you do this a gain, but break all the powder off of the fuses, then stick the powder in an aluminium ball, and stick a fuse going inside the ball, this should decrease the oxygen touching the powder and the flame, which will hopefully make the smoke you want, and it'll last longer

Grant, I know what your issue is on this. You left all the fuses!!!! Fuses burn at a much hotter temperature, causing the dye pellet to incinerate instead of a slow low heat burn to allow them to smoke. If you do try it again remove the fuses and place just them together. Only don’t pack them to densely or you’ll have a big boom. Thank you for you fun shows! Let me know if I can help some time.

Could be also due the lack of pressure of the container (to expell the smoke from a hole and don't let in much of the air) and the abundance of oxigen (that make the fire hotter) all of that with the paper cup (another fuel for the fire) and the fuses (that burn with a hotter temperature), all together make an exploding burned dye chards.

the reaction is too fast in this version. the small hole in the original version starves the reaction of oxygen, allowing a slower and lower temp reaction. If you were to put them all in a tin can with approximately the same size hole, I think you would find a result that you were thinking about before you tried this. possibly try crushing and reshaping the pellets. I see people on the right track, but all it is, is that the reaction needs to be slowed.

I would suggest actually crushing the smoke bombs down. I think that might have the desired effect. I am rather confident that the fuses have a higher burn temperature than the actual smoke part. By crushing it down, you can remove the additional heat from the fuses. You also by placing them in open cups allowed oxygen into the mix allowing a quicker (thus hotter) reaction to occur. So confining the bombs in the cups was a step in the right direction.

Smoke occurs during a slow burn (very little flame), that's why they're encased in a shell to prevent oxygen from coming in. When exposed to oxygen, it becomes explosive and makes a cleaner burn, removing the pigment in the process. This is just what i think :)

I was thinking the same thing. You want a slow burn to generate smoke. i.e. less heat. Choke it out, like when you throw green leaves or hay onto a fire pit. When they were exposed to the air, I'm assuming the oxygen was just generating too much heat, and like he said, scorching the pigments. I'd love to see this again, but remove the fuses, stick the blocks into a longer cylindrical tube, like a paper towel roll, wrap it a couple times in aluminum foil to give a nice barrier from outside reactions, then light it.

I done this, and you only need to add organic dye to your mixture. Just pick the color you want and add it, and it works really well. Though you want to cook your mixture, and not just mix the powders together.

Joshua S it's not possible to use the dye in sugar fuel. It burns too hot. It will burn the dye before it can vaporize it in the smoke. And it doesn't burn fast enough to use it as s rocket propellant itself. Color smoke mixtures are very complex.

I think the best way for what you are wanting to make happen is you'd need to wrap them in one long narrow cylinder, thus making them light off one at a time, wrap them using aluminum foil. Then, to keep the heat down, wrap the aluminum cylinder in wet paper towels. Thus making a slow(er) burning smoke stick

There was too much air so the smoke did not have enough time to well “SMOKE” you really needed to make an air tight container to put them in and also like I saw in another comment you should have taken all the fuses off so please if you do try it again please take this into consideration 😁😁

sadly he would get the same result, since the smoke is flammable, the fire would get too strong and burn the concentrated chemical before it could be released, he had the right idea when fully wrapping it, though the fire was too strong and broke through to the smoke

Grant I've done this before.You gotta break the smoke material off the fuse pack it tightly into your container and use only one fuse. All those fuses along with the extra oxygen is why it burned so hot and fast.then wrap your container with duct tape or something stronger than foil. It has to be strong enough to build a little pressure. look at the construction of the original smoke bomb for example. Your hole should be about the size of a baked bean for those cups. Gotta keep excess oxygen out and let the burn use only the oxidizer in the material. when you grow up with the crappy fireworks that was legal where i lived you tend to experiment to try and make them more interesting.

This is exactly what I came here to say. If you ever try to put a lighter to a tiny burning smoke bomb, it will instantly ignite the smoke and turn it into a rocket. You have to starve the process of oxygen and anything hot enough to ignite the smoke.

Yeah, I think the fuses are causing the smoke material to burn instead of smolder. Also, he should wrap them whole thing in cardboard leaving a small hole in the top to prevent too much oxygen from entering cause them to smolder instead of going up in flames.

smoke is flammable. need to starve the bomb of oxygen. those fuses are burning creating too much heat. plus there is a higher surface area that burns because there are individual bombs. if you crush the bombs up, pack them tight and use a single fuse that should correct the flame problem

+Senseinikolas well, helium could be liquid, but it's much more expensive to make than liquid nitrogen as its nearly impossible to make it due to the fact that helium liquifies at just above the lowest temperature possible (absolute zero)
