Hey, a buffer or buffer solution is something you put in a liquid (in this case sulfuric acid) to make sure its pH stay constant even if you put in contact with for example sodium hydroxide (something with a different pH). I'm not really sure why this is important for drain cleaner but for exemple you have a buffer in your blood because you need to have a very precise and constant pH to stay healthy and you don't want any ion in your body to change it.
@retrograde39717 жыл бұрын
NeRv0usSTA A buffer stabilizes pH because it's a reversible reaction. A buffer is when you make a solution of a weak acid and its conjugate base or a weak base and its conjugate acid. Sulfuric acid is a strong acid, which means it completely dissociates in water rather than partial dissociation. So I don't really understand how they can make an H2SO4 buffer, maybe it's something else, some other kind of buffer.

A buffer solution can resist small changes in pH so its pH remains reasonably constant. Shampoos and stuff have them in so the pH doesn't change and damage your hair and your body is full of them so enzymes don't denature.

This reminds me of the experiments I used to do when I was 8 years old using household chemicals found in the home. I'd just combine minute quantities of various detergents and chemicals typically found under the kitchen sink to look for any reactions. The coolest explosives I made was mixing Crystal Drano with gasoline, and a muriatic acid bomb by pouring some muriatic acid into a 2 liter bottle, twist up some aluminum foil (not tin foil) and drop it in, tighten the cap tightly, shake it up, and throw it (far a away). For the Crystal Drano bomb, I first used a McDonald's straw because they're really fat, capped one end with candle wax, poured in the Crystal Drano, then capped the other end with wax. Then dropped the straw into a close-able container of gasoline, and sealed the container. The gasoline dissolved the plastic of the straw, and once it made contact with the Crystal Drano, it exploded. Later, I drilled a hole into a ping pong ball, and used that as the Crystal Drano container, and plugged the hole with wax. It gives a longer "timer" before the gasoline breaches it. The muriatic acid bomb begins its reaction the moment you shake the bottle. Once you tighten the cap on the plastic bottle, shake it violently about 5 times, then throw it at least 30 meters away, and take cover (it will expel a cloud of acid which you don't want to be anywhere near). Then, watch as the plastic bottle doubles in size before the pressure makes the container fail. The loudest explosion was from using a 3 liter bottle. I was in artillery in the Army, and that explosion rivaled an artillery cannon firing. It rattled windows several houses away in my neighborhood on 1/2 acre land parcels. Oh, also don't set one of those off on a lawn as you will have a perfect 20 meter circle of dead grass for at least a year. If using a 3 liter bottle (or larger), it is concussive, and you can see the concussion wave spread across the ground ... Do not be anywhere near it as concussive explosions can cause brain injury. This is what kids who are bored, and in a rural area come up with (at least I did) LoL

It looks like it only hardened when hit the oxygen, if you would try it in a vacuum chamber it might turn into a liquid. Or the cold made it hardened so you could also try to keep the carbon ash a bit hotter so it might stay liquid. If any of these work put it in a mold so you have cool figures. (I would love to see carbon batarangs)
@user2557 жыл бұрын
I think it hardens when the reaction completes, also the reason why it flows on top of the liquid.
@ItsTime2Burn7 жыл бұрын
Would be difficult to hold a vacuum with all the gas it produces.
@user2557 жыл бұрын
+Bats True and the gases may destroy the vacuum pump (depends on the pump)... however with some arrangements I think it would be worth to try.
@thebottleflipchanel93077 жыл бұрын
user255 but maybe you don't get a reaction if you but it in a vacuum chamber, then you don't have to worry about the smoke and after you got the mixture you can put it in a mold
@user2557 жыл бұрын
+The BottleFlip Chanel No the reaction happens independently of air. Here is the *unbalanced* equation: H2SO4 + C12H22O11 --> H2O + C + CO2 + SO2. In reality that reaction does not complete perfectly and there are various side products. So, we know there is no need for air.

Try sealing the top of the bottle and also conducting the experiment on a plate as no pressure will build up like it did in the neck of the bottle

Grant can you mix liquid propane or butane with liquid oxygen and then light it up so the fuel burn all together Like if you want to happen
@Larry13027 жыл бұрын
Φίλιππος Τόλιας Liquid oxygen has a freezing point of -219 °C and a boiling point of -183 °C, its cryogenic. Because of its cryogenic nature, liquid oxygen can cause the materials it touches to become extremely brittle. So it's very difficult to store and i don't think grand is going to be able to get liquid oxygen.
@ThePokemonPizza7 жыл бұрын
getting liquid nitrogen = free liquid oxygen think about it, oxygen is all in the air and liquid nitrogen is colder than the boiling point of oxygen...its easy

@kleetus927 жыл бұрын
Kinda, but this would act more like charcoal than say wood with some volatile resins in it.
@MKollerSMS7 жыл бұрын
Actually, it wouldn't. The true catalyst of a "burnable" fuel is hydrogen. The simple formula is 2CH2 + O2 = CO + CO2 + 2H2O. AKA 2 Hydrocarbon + 1 Oxygen = 1 Carbon Monoxide + 1 Carbon Dioxide + 1 Water. It's also why hydrogen gas burns so efficiently and only has water as its byproduct (2H2 + O2 = 2H20).
@ShadowVipers7 жыл бұрын
Madeline Koller um no, what do you think Coal is made from?
@MKollerSMS7 жыл бұрын
Well, according to Wikipedia, carbon, HYDROGEN, oxygen, nitrogen and sulfur. Also, all gasoline-based fuels (methane, hexane, octane) are hydrocarbons, just FYI.
