I'm sad because I doubt there are any good programs to translate cities skylines cities into models you can explore and stuff, but I really want to see this city (and a few others) as explorable 3d environments in like VR or smthn. There doesn't even need to be a game with a story really, just the ability to explore it as if I was a tourist visiting the city.

Have you heard of the “mareterra” project in Monaco? Since the whole new district is getting built on the sea, the ecological question was raised and many measures were taken. Will you do the same in your cities? Imagining how the local government would address the ecological issues could be quite interesting, especially since Asturis kinda popped out of nowhere… Or at least I assume that it isn’t the kind of city that was slowly growing over centuries Awesome video btw.
@ultmateragnarok83762 жыл бұрын
Presumably it was built up rather quickly due to the presence of the space elevator, which would immediately make a city surrounding it a good idea wherever it's placed. A lot of these structures due to their verticality seem like they might well have been built with the intent of layers being added, but were once only the lowest sections - the flying train system also does this, with well-integrated supports in spite of it being a supposedly unexpected addition to the train station. The last cinematic shots also show that cliffside with all the rail lines on it from a while ago, which has a considerable section of undeveloped land directly above it. Stuff like that might show how the city sprawled with completed buildings and, once they're upgraded, it would then fan out internally to fill in those such spaces as well as rising up.
@marintix48292 жыл бұрын
@@ultmateragnarok8376 well the question is not how the city grows, but how the natural environnement might react after such a sudden change. And also how humans (environmentalists or not) would adress this issue. The Mareterra project had such an issue, and so, they had to find a way to preserve the local environment.

I think those places are mostly bad because they don’t invest enough into keeping them safe and secure. If you build a place to house those you don’t care about, and who can’t afford to take care of themselves, it will inevitably become a hellhole,regardless of architectural style. On the other hand, the Barbican in London is also Brutalist, but home to a much higher class of tenants, and is quite nice. This place has plenty of greenery and transit access, and will probably turn out OK. I think some water features would have been nice though. And ideally some assets that count as parks in terms of land value. Also not sure what the city services are like there. Probably firefighters are a low priority with everything made of non flammable concrete (though I don’t know if this matters in the game-can cubes even burn?) but some police presence will help with maintaining security. Or does this use mods to make issues like that irrelevant?

I've never been a big fan of brutalism, but I have to say it fits weirdly well into a tropical context. There is something about the oppressive order it brings to a chaotic environment such as a jungle that really resonates with me. I still want to see some form of museum or history exhibit where the running gag is that what this world calls "remnants of the ancient past" are what we in our world simply call "early 20th Century shit." It's simply too funny to pass up, and would really give some sense of perspective to the world that Asturis inhabits.

I think that this part of the city has turned out really well. I don't exactly enjoy the lack of shelters (given it's a tropical city, so hot sun or heavy rain), but I do understand the reasoning as I don't think there would be an easy way to add them without changing the vibes. Like the plain uniform concrete looks good (pretty, but not? Idk a word for it), but putting any form of shelter would mess it up. Even if it was of the same style and not the style of the previous shelters, it just wouldn't really match.
@BlazingImp771512 жыл бұрын
I do think that regardless of how well this looks, it's more of something that would be unique to that part, that district, of the city. Yeah it could be cool to see it expanded, but beyond the expansion I dont think that other parts of the city should have the same look. Yes brutalism can come back, but I think that this part of the city should be its own style.
@BlazingImp771512 жыл бұрын
And on the topic of other parts of the city, I think it would be cool to see some areas that resemble different cities from different parts of the world. Since this is supposed to be a city built up around the space elevator, it would have people immigrating from all over the world for work and the access to space. I think it would probably have different architectures and stuff to reflect that. Give people the taste of home. So some parts of the city with more traditional architecture or mods to it from all over the world. Like Chinatowns in American and Canadian cities, but for all sorts of countries and not just Asia.

Brutalism gets an undeservedly bad rap. A beautiful (or ugly) building can exist in any architectural style, and brutalism is no exception to that. Unfortunately, a lot of brutalist buildings are indeed ugly, and people tend to focus on those examples without really thinking (or even knowing) about all the nice-looking ones.

What I understand about brutalism is that the design should only accomplish it's purpose. Good structures also have in mind inspiration of the soul. I find it funny that the least brutalist (according to my maybe incomplete knowledge) designer - you, love brutalism that much. The brutalist structures are in my opinion one of the main reasons our society is f**ed. As some roman said. Publice egestas, privatim opulentia which roughly translates to the worse the public spaces the more corruption.
