Experimenting with Our Harvest Right Freeze Dryer to Make Freeze Dried Backpacking Breakfast Meals!

Here I go again experimenting trying to make backpacking meals with the Harvest Right Freeze Dryer. We have been pretty successful with individual food items but less than successful on making actual complete meals.
This time I experiment making breakfast 3 separate meals. Specifically, Scrambled eggs with all the fixings (breakfast skillet), Granola with mixed fruit & milk, and grits with brown sugar and cinnamon. I cook, prepare, freeze dry, and test try each in this video. Is this goodbye to the traditional popular brands of backpacking meals or the start of making my own with my own recipe and portion size? Lets see how it turned out. Enjoy!
Ever since we got into hiking & backpacking more seriously, Kristy has been wanting a freeze dryer. With dehydrated backpacking meals & snacks in mind, we also wanted the ability to make our own freeze dried foods for the trail. I purchased the medium sized Harvest Right freeze dryer for Kristy for Christmas. It came early so she couldn't resist. She has been running batches ever since.

I am also a new freeze dryer. I took a trip to Hobby Lobby and in the cake decorating department I purchased silicone molds to freeze my portions, It works wonderfully. I also used whole milk in my cereal which I put into my molds. after freezing i remove the frozen product from the mold and place it on the freeze drying tray. It makes a cereal bar or a breakfast bar of eggs and veggies. Really enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for watching. That is awesome that you have a freeze dryer too. Hopefully you are having as much fun with it as we are. My wife bought some similar molds too. We will be using them to portion out soups. We will try freeze drying them on future videos. We hope they will be great for trail meals. Right now we are like on our 30th batch of apples. LOL. So many from the tree this year. Sounds like you have some great ideas for meals and snacks too. I'll need to try doing our own milk next time instead of the store bought dry milk. Sounds like you have a great idea for doing it. Thanks again. Have a wonderful day.

I failed my first day of the High Line trail. Was starting solo from Chapeta and ran smack into altitude sickness on the first pass. I recall your wife struggling with that too, but she went on to finish. I'd love to see a video of her explaining how she felt, and what worked for her to get her through. Once I turned back and dropped down a bit, the nausea went away. I might have been ok had I just got over the pass and dropping to a lower altitude on the other side. I guess I wasn’t prepared to risk it. The next day at home, I realized I wasn’t as physically prepared as I needed to be. Lots of sore leg muscles. I’ll be hitting the gym and doing more high-altitude preparation hikes earlier in the year to test my tolerance for such things. I might also start towards the end of July. There was so much water up there. I’ll give it another go next year. Thanks for your example.
@Packsalot
@Packsalot 2 жыл бұрын
Great job on your attempt. Think of it as a practice run instead of a failure. There is no such thing as a failure, just one step closer to completion for your next try. However many tries it takes. Well done. That altitude is a real thing. I always cross my fingers the first day on the trail. You are correct, above 10K Kristy did start having the affects. Severe fatigue, nausea, headache, & the onset of the runs. Once she descended into the next valley she started feeling better but it took her another day to fully rid of the affects. Almost always a drop in elevation fixes it quick. It also helps if you stay at the TH for a day or two to help acclimate. You never know how altitude will affect you until you try. I am heading up there again for round 3 of the HL next weekend. The trail will find those muscles you did not know you had! All you can do is prepare the best you can, and try try again.

Well now I'm curious if anyone will comment and tell you that you should clean those off before you use them. Kristy, add bacon bits to the grocery list aaaaahahaha! Looks so darn good. Might have to whip some of this up with my fake eggs. I've got some instant grits in my cabinet. Oh the way you like them. Yeah, they're just plain. I got them cuz I never tried them. I just used butter. It was fine. Think I'd probably like them better with cinnamon and brown sugar too. They remind me of malt o meal. Is malt o meal grits? I need to google that. BRB. Nope not the same I guess. Malt o meal is made from barley, cream of wheat from... well... wheat, of course, and grits from corn. So they are all different. Interesting. Wow 17 hours. I can't get over how long it takes for things to freeze dry. Haha those grits look like styrofoam. Sounds like a good idea to me to add the dry milk to the granola. So cool that the granola and grits worked. I'm sure your eggs will work too. That's gotta be a bit of a money saver to do it yourself rather than to always buy the meals from the store. Heck yeah! breakfast burrito. That was fun to watch. Glad they were all a success.

Thanks Felix. Well, if you watch real close you see that I reached in the bowl right after cracking it open to retrieve a piece of poo! LOL. Bacon bits are on the list! Hahaha. I like my grits sweet like most things. Sugar makes me happy! The process does take awhile to get every last bit of moisture out of the food but when it is done the food will last for 20+ years if stored properly. All the food actually turned out great this time. Time to start saving some money on those backpacking meals now that everything was a success in the experiment. Thanks for watching. Take care.

Thank you very much for watching and commenting. Yes, you certainly could add the hot sauce to the eggs before freeze drying. Thank you for a great video! Can you tell me the dimensions of the mylar bag that you had the eggs in? I’m really excited to try these.

Thanks for watching and commenting. Yes the mylar bags we purchased on Amazon. They are "GooGou Resealable Zip Mylar 6.3"x9.4" Bags. We use them for everything we store short term. For long term storage we use the mason jars or heavy duty mylar bags that are heat sealed. Hope this helps. Have a great day.

I saw that you used store boughten powdered milk. YUCK! Freeze dried whole milk you make yourself is amazing. This video is 10 months ago, so you probably already have done this. 😊

Do you have your pump oil on the max level?
@Packsalot

The pump oil level varies from batch to batch. I try to keep it at the midpoint. During or after a batch it will fluctuate slightly. Thanks for watching and the comment. Have a wonderful day.

@@FatemaYousef-h7q I used a freeze dryer machine. It runs a cycle at like 40 below zero as part of its process before it expects all the moisture content. I have not tried this with an air fryer. Hope this helps clarify. Have a great day.

@@Packsalot thank you for replying. I have a harvest freeze dryer and I am new at this and I am confused about the setting. What temperature do I put and for how many hours. Appreciate your help.

@@FatemaYousef-h7q I didn't know there was such a custom setting. I just put the trays in, hit the start button, and follow the prompts on screen. Then depending on what your freeze drying, the process time to completionisr anywhere from 7 to 30 hours.
