Oh I went to see it the other day. I really enjoyed your painting and the fact that you were inspired and motivated by the sky's reflection and light-play on the sand. I liked it a lot. It was moody and at the same time determined which I think echoes in the vague details of your expression in the painting. Congratulations.

Fantastic, saw the exhibition a few weeks ago, yours was definitely one of my favourites! Congrats on finally getting a piece in, I've tried 5 times, like yourself I've got to the final round of judging a couple of times but never the exhibition. I had pretty much given up, but watching this has inspired me to try again next year!

I think the biggest problem with these exhibitions is cost, sometimes the cost of entering one piece can be a huge barrier. Having got pieces onto these shoes, I found they didnt have an impact on my career, I just lost money on entering, framing, shipping etc.

The cost of entering isn't too bad, though these shows obviously generate a lot of money from all the entries, as you say it's the additional costs of framing and shipping. Particularly if abroad. Though now that most things have a digital submission, you only have to pay those if you get through to the second round.

The best advice for getting into art competitions is...don't bother.

Art is not a competition. The notion that it’s capable of being a competition contradicts the one objective truth about art: all art is subjective. A person’s art will connect with the people it’s meant for. All this pomp and pageantry vying for the opinion of pretentious judges is absurdly stupid and useless. An artist of social worth who tells the truth about humanity will connect with their tribe, be it a single person or a million. That has authentic value. Not this.

Hi Alex come back to view all the comments. As Abraham Lincoln said, “You can please some of the people some of the time, but you cannot please all of the people all of the time.” I got a copy of the exhibition catalogue with all the paintings in. I noticed that Ruth Fitton in the video is wearing the same dress as in the portrait. We got a very good look at her painting but not yours. Some of the paintings do not seem to have been photographed that well while other are good. Yours and Ruth’s do not seem to have come out that well. Probably due to the more subtle tonal values. Otherwise the catalogue is great. I read the description to your painting. Quote: “It took several years and multiple attempts”. Now that’s dedication which makes the artist. Deeply pleased for you.
