"Putin may be a liar and a demagogue, but it is hypocritical for the United States to insist that we do not accept the principle of 'spheres of influence,'" Sanders went on to write. "Does anyone really believe that the United States would not have something to say if, for example, Mexico was to form a military alliance with a US adversary?" Sanders asked. "Countries should be free to make their own foreign policy choices, but making those choices wisely requires a serious consideration of the costs and benefits," Sanders added. Because if Ukraine had been a member of NATO, none of this would be happening, and we wouldn't be having this conversation. And all of the people who have perished so far on both sides, would still be alive. Because Putin would never invade a NATO country. He knows better..

Putin is a liar. Crimea has not always been a part of Russia. Crimea was the land of the Crimean Tartars. When the Soviet Union occupied Ukraine, including Crimea and made it part of what was not Russia, but the UdSSR/Soviet Union, the Tartars were discriminated and oppressed. Most fled from their homeland. After the dissolution of the USSR and the liberation/release of the non-Russian countries like Ukraine, many Tartar families came back. In 2014, Russia once again occupied Crimea and the repression began again.

You're the liar! Crimea was a land that, as a prize, went to different peoples. It was owned at various times by Greeks, Italians, Mongols, Turks, including Turkish vassals in the person of Tatars, who are now called Crimean. But they were not originally Crimean. They are just as alien as everyone else. And the Russians as well. But it was under the Russians that cities appeared on this land that still exist. It is Russians, both by nationality and by spirit, that they are inhabited. Yes, I agree that the Crimean Tatar people were not treated very correctly during Stalin's time. But it was only after the reunification of Crimea with Russia that justice was finally restored. The Tatars of Crimea were given rights, built the largest cathedral mosque and given the right to their language throughout this territory. There was no such thing under the USSR or Ukraine! Most of the Tatars have already been compensated.
@sonjamarx385
@sonjamarx385 2 жыл бұрын
@@MaxVanda of course in ancient times it wasn't the "Tartars" who lived in Crimea. What kind of argument is this? That was a different age. What I do know is that the Tartars suffered under the Soviet regime, many left Crimea and some came back after 1991-94. This is not about how the Tartars were treated by the Soviets, but whether Crimea was always Russian territory. Well, it wasn't. When the Ukraine became independent Russia guaranteed the sovereignty of the country, including Crimea.

Re: Putin's motives. He knows that he can never defeat the West. But the closest he could come to defeating the West is to have a nuclear war, one that will destroy most of the West, and most of the East, but he just might survive, and be hailed as the champion or Russia. Further, even if he didn't survive, he considers he will go down in history as the champion of Russia. This IS his off-ramp. At his age, after his years of struggle as a leader, a nuclear war serves as his swan song, and he is singing it to himself as the West tries to figure out what he is "thinking." This motive makes sanctions, loss of popular appeal, bombing of hospitals and schools and humanitarian routes irrelevant to Putin, since the final result makes all of those just unimportant, if not moot points along the way to the massive destruction contemplated, accepted, and/or even hoped for. This ugly motive is of course deniable, but I say it is his intention, and that he is perfectly willing to risk it all in order to have this big "win" as part of his legacy. Calling him crazy or evil won't work, because he knows it's crazy and evil. But it is his SOLUTION!! NATO, and the rest of world leaders should acknowledge this, brainstorm it, and prepare accordingl

Putin hasn't changed ever. His demeanor and political moves may have varied over the years, but he hasn't. His fundamental character and goals have been obvious since the Chechen war. His call to Bush after 9/11 does not change the fact that it is not too far fetched, given the current situation, that he may well have been the mastermind of the event. Very young, he grasped that the Soviet Union and its successive communist leaderships never officially gave up the doctrine of world domination. And this is precisely what we are witnessing right now under a very crude light.

At the beginning of the Ukraine conflict, the question of whether Putin is a rational actor was trending, and I thought it was a stupid question. What does it mean to be rational when you are a psychopath and you are going to die? It is a phenomenon we have observed time and again in the context of domestic conflict, where a psychopathic or otherwise troubled partner takes his whole world away with him when he leaves. What's it to him? He won't be there anymore. Especially true if he was on the way out anyways. Might as well leave in a blaze of glory and do maximum damage, especially if there is a target for the rage that was being experienced like an unresolved abcess for too long. It's not just disregard for others but a satisfaction in taking something away with oneself that such people obtain, experiencing it as a form of personal gain, much as everything else they experience in life. I don't see a difference between politics-geopolitics-war and domestic-cult-hostage crises: they are all various manifestations of the exact same pathology finding different forms of expression. I am familiar with the Jonestown case so I refer to it. Right now, we are at the part where the subject becomes a recluse and takes a group with him into isolation- it is a way of trying to keep a façade of glory, of being right, righteous, justified, legitimate, acceptable, decent... adored. Turning inwards to nurture an alternative narrative and fostering support for it with a large following so as to float it as a legitimate view of the world, leaving room for doubt about his character (maybe he's actually not a bad person, maybe the outside world has it wrong), which can be considered righteous if viewed through the prism of events interpreted in a reversed manner. It's a bid to save face. It is crucial for him to save face, it's like a survival issue. One striking feature about Putin is his appetite, and appetite is good because it gives you a reason to live. His immense appetite is directed at accruing glory and power in all of its forms. While his peers are content just being rich- he needs the state AND the money. There is an appetite for those showy things, like the pomp of a majestic staircase lined with armed guards, an ornate table flanked with sexy stewardesses, putting on display his commanding presence at his masterly post as he at long last allows for his military toy collection to stretch its legs... What a man! I had an old boss like that- the neat uniform, the good press, the status, the respect, the authority... it's EVERYTHING to these kinds of people. Having some bombed towns in your back pocket is just another thing to add to that list, and there is no distinction to be made for them about these, as they belong with the other things on account of all being flashy manly things. All those pictures we saw on the horse, etc... I remembre the huge buy in among the educated Russian youth early on in his term, even I belived he really was that fresh, cultured mind everyone said he was, based on that which at the time I thought might or might not be actual propaganda. Only today did I see video of him addressing a crowd probably in electoral times and speaking the language of Hitler- the language of genetic superiority and genetic right, genetic destiny- that thing by now should be considered a very huge red flag, which in fact closes a case by itself. He very much authentically believes in the destiny of the Russian people as a passionnate belief system, as the equivalent German belief system was beheld by Hitler. The psychopathy transmorphs into belief systems that have wider appeal, with crowds, beyond his mere person. He enjoys having this belief system because it affords him a third type of success, aside from money and statesmanship, which is the intangible asset of mystical destiny, and which the two other things could not provide. Much like characters such as Jim Jones and Madoff, he has a seediness, reminiscent of some dismal early days in unspeakably loveless and humble beginnings. His sadism takes on the face of a grim reaper, an angel of death of sorts, more inclined on annihilation than torture. Barren lands, mass death and destruction being the special signature of his brand of depravity. I didn't watch the full pre-invasion speech but there is not so much a sneer as there is a snarl that periodically curls up his nose, intended to communicate much anger directed at the West. There is a violence about his gaze, he likes to instill terror, and I suspect he is also like one of my old bosses who had a small café in which absolutely everything went wrong, and wasn't too smart, with a doing things on the fly kind of vibe.
