@@suckboytony9637 Agreed. I think a really big part is your weight distribution is a lot less forgiving on a snowboard than skis. I went from being a strong intermediate boarder to carving fairly confidently my first time skiing because I could keep my weight forwards OR backwards (or on the inner/outer edges) without wiping out. Plus if you catch an edge on skis you can transfer weight to the other foot and save yourself, which definitely saved me several times within the day. If you try to keep your weight back and ride timidly on a snowboard you can't really make a turn, and if you keep your weight too far forwards you'll catch an edge and crash hard. The advanced skier I swapped with for an hour never managed to carve and definitely couldn't stay standing for 100s of feet like the guy in this vid. Very impressive

Totally depends on the fall...the tricky thing is that you can't stabilize yourself with both legs like you can with skiing, so when you fall its pretty much arms or face first into the ground. I broke my shoulder catching an edge at 35mph the first day up this season. But yes all your gear stays on.

He is an expert skier so he is accustomed to speed and the concept of edge control to turn and stop. But at the same time his skiing expertise is his own handicap because when he picks up speed you can easily see how he tries to control the board moving his center of mass forward and rotating his hips. He did extremely well though given that this is his first time snowboarding.

This is so interesting, i was a skier for 10 seasons when I first tried snowboarding. The knowledge of edges, mountain slopes, and the physics of snow carries over but besides that literally nothing else lol. But i think the biggest difference for me was riding longboards with really loose trucks for a few years before I first snowboarded. The weight transfer and balance is similar and I think helped me a lot with transferring from heel to toe and vice versa. I had a little easier time snowboarding because of this, I think.

Truly amazing effort for someone who has never stepped on snowboard before. Switch, toe/heel turns, 180s...lol. You can tell he understands the concepts just the application of it is off a bit.

I’m a decent skier and planning on taking snowboard lessons next season with my youngest daughter. Was talking to an older guy last week waiting for the gondola and he picked up snowboarding a little older than me (I’m 46) and he said its easier on the knees than skiing, which is good news to me. Looking forward to making a fool of myself for a few days!

I did the exact same thing my first time, but without any pointers. It was the Middlebury Snow Bowl up in Vermont, a lifelong skiier with around ~20 years experience. A couple of my friends were beginners, so I decided to gut it out with them and try boarding (and a little selfishly, I didn't want to be waiting around for them all day). We went up and figured it out as we went. That first day feels like you've had your ass kicked, literally and figuratively. And your wrists just kinda go numb. I was probably lucky not to get injured, I should have taken a lesson or started on something easier at least. But once you get the hang of turning it's a beautiful feeling. I stuck with snowboarding after that. I love skiing but boarding brings me even more joy.

As someone who has been skiing for the last 20 years... I just learned how to snowboard yesterday and it was not as hard as I expected. After about 4 hours both me and my friend could turn both directions, control our speed, and make it down a blue run no problem. My fiance on the other hand could not. My friend who is also learning to ski said it was way easier than skiing, so I think it's a person by person thing. My fiance said skiing was easier to learn, but me and my friend think snowboarding was. He can't turn both directions on skis, my fiance and I have both been skiing for ages, so I think we got one person from each camp in our little sample size.

As someone who literally only had these first days of constantly falling and being afraid to crash into another person, this was excruciating to watch 😅 I'm not a skier though, so I'll definitely need this whole season to get to the point where I can trust myself to do safe turns.. Very much hope I'm gonna get there, snowboarding is so awesome!

I tried not to laugh out of great respect, but... it reminded me of all my falls. He was outstanding! When I crossed from skis to snowboard, it took me a LONG time to figure out that I was twisting my board, trying to keep my shoulders perpendicular to the board (like a skier) instead of in line with the board (like a 'boarder). Consequently, I was always hooking edges and doing grand slams. Great job!

That was pretty darned impressive! Myself on the other hand: Tried snowboarding once (intermediate skiier). There were no lessons available on the day I was going. ...All the tutorial videos in the world wouldn't have mattered. I didn't just fall down; I fell up, down, backwards, forwards, everywhere. And that was on the bunny slope!! Definitely going to try it again, but will be booking a lesson for sure.

Loved it! As someone who started skiing then switched to snowboarding, that fear of catching the toe edge looms large. But man, you do need a little speed and a little slope to get the hang of this sport. But I wouldn't recommend charging as hard as he did on your first day 😅Some of those edge-of-control heelsides had me sweating

The irony of when it was mentioned "I can see how it's so easy to catch a toe edge and break your wrist" then gave a shoutout to "Mike", considering the first time I ever went snowboarding I did what was not recommended around the 840 mark of not going up on your first time. I did that exact thing with a buddy. I caught a really bad toe edge on some ice and shattered my wrist into many pieces, ironically enough my name is also Mike.

Having done no board sports before I had a horrible time trying to learn to snowboard back in the 90s. My mountain didn’t rent snowboards or do snowboarding lessons so I had to go buy all of my gear at a store (a hefty investment). My friends didn’t teach me so I was left trying to figure it out myself. Utter…hell… It wasn’t until another friend took me and taught me toe/heel edge and how to do falling leaves that things started clicking and I started having a ton of fun. Out of all those initial friends I went with I’m the only one that kept with it. 25-ish years later I’m going to be trying skiing for the first time this year and can’t wait :)
