Snowboarder here, that's really good for a first time, but theres a few things you can improve on... 1. Put the weight on the front foot(except on powder, but thats smth else), and keep the back leg to pivot around the front foot, you can add weight on the back foot as the board gets perpendicular to the slope. eg. 7:34 / 6:23 you had too much weight on the back which stopped you from "pivoting" well. 2. You shouldn't bend your body, and keep it straight with the board, its counter intuitive as you can't really look forward like that, so you need lift your chin, then spin your head(kinda hard to explain in chat). 3. when one of your feet isnt attached and you want to put it on the board, place it on the inside of the binding, then push it against the binding to have more grip(some boards also have pads there for more grip)(eg. 2:05) 4. you can do nollies(optional, change foot each time so its kinda like walking) to move on flat if you don't feel like unbinding. 5. You should work on having a great control over your board on both edges, you can take a steep not bumpy trail, and then go down like you did at 3:50 and attempt to go a good speed/switch egdes/overall being able to control the board really well, as if it were a part of your body I haven't seen all of your snowboarding, and not always from a good angle to see your posture, so i might've missed points or stuff you already fixed pls read this cuz i spent some time doing it :)

Hey CASI certified instructor here, your definitely coming from the right place but the first two are big no no's and the fifth one is questionable. All this info is from CASI and ill try my best to understandable. 1. Weight on the front foot. Weight should be evenly distributed across both feet. When doing turns you want to use flexion and extension of the knees (bending and unbending) to adjust your weight or pressure during a turn (would have to explain this irl but look up videos from CASI and their should be some that explain it). 2. Don't bend over. While in essence I see where you are coming from but when snowboarding our back is certainly upright but the rest of body should be moving. Hips move back and forth to shift weight across the board toeside and heelside . 3. Sound advice I agree. 4. Nollies, scooching, duck walk, etc all good ideas. 5. Yes he should work on that but he needs to work on everything, its like looking at a broken car and saying to someone all you need to do is fix the transmission. Might help, probably not. When teaching we teach from a guide called the quick ride manuel, it gives a solid easy progression that builds a snowboarders base from the ground up with good habits and good technique. A progression would look like: parts of a board, strapping in one foot, moving board around/getting comforatable stepping around it on it etc, skateing, then we would get into movement, going down hill sideways aka sideslip, do that for a hella long time then add direction go back and forth across the hill, then usually switch over to toside, go just backwards down hill, then adding movement side to side, then we get into actually turning the board. This part is so long takes so long and is the hardest to teach usually. Just being a snowboarder doesn't make you and absolute expert, I have no doubt you could go out and help someone learn or help them improve (also called being a kind and nice person like you have demonstrated to be) but it is best to leave rider development and learning to a certified instructor. TLDR; Good heart, but to best teach someone become certified, they teach you how to teach and how to ride technically correct.

@@bluepvp900 Nooo..... This is definitely what I was afraid of check my comment...
@RyfterWasTaken6 күн бұрын
@TeaFour2 1. Well weight should not really be evenly put on both, i feel like this is more a posture issue, as you should be straight and perpendicular to the slope, which causes the weight to go on the front feet. imgur /a/DfRRK5h . But people tend to always try and lean back too much as they feel too much weight is on the front feet, which is why i said that. Flexing and extending knees is for carving, and i wouldnt recommend both to a beginner. I find it best to drift turn (not sure its the correct word, balayage in french if you speak it) before learning actual turns, for more fun and speed. Once your good at that, carving becomes pretty ez. 2. Meant no twisting instead of no bending. 5. Well i was kinda asking him to go back to the sideslip step, cuz he went a bit too fast on this step, and i didn't want to go too specific, as if would've been too hard to explain/too prone for errors via text. I also missed a lot of stuff cuz i had access to limited footage. I also have the ESF snowboard level 3 (highest level before 2 freestyle centered courses) and taught a few friends how to snowboard(using approx the same steps you mentioned in #5).

@wolfpecker571010 күн бұрын
Totally agree, another thing that was an absolute game changer for me when I was learning was when someone told me to get more comfortable with my edges by leaning and kind of kicking/sweeping the back foot around. Eventually you will get to the point where 95% of your carving is just leaning back and forth, but learning to carve by using the back foot as somewhat like a rudder was extremely helpful for me!
@TeaFour26 күн бұрын
@lucatonipeperoni Ummmm.... Questionable advice... always love to see boarders lifting each other up but make sure the advice is sound sound. Leaning forward in some cases is good but the best body position is a "centered and mobile body position" so not leaning forwards or backwards but in the middle in a nice athletic stance. I do definitely agree with you he does need to lean more forward but only to correct how much he is leaning back.
@TeaFour26 күн бұрын
@@wolfpecker5710 Umm probably easier way to learn is literally book one private lesson and they will set you up with drills and things to practice and a real actual idea of what proper carving looks like. Just as an Instructor I can see and make corrections supper easily like the one you described and I could likely have gotten you doing carv turns in an afternoon.
@lucatonipeperoni6 күн бұрын
@ yes you’re right. In general the balance should be athletic balanced. My thought was more when you’re on a steep slope and don’t give s little weight on the front foot the board wont turn easily. I see a lot of beginners leaning backwards and unable to turn

Love the video. To make yourself seem less of a gimp, if you snowboard ever again, you should do a trick called “making a table.” You do it before you descend , after you exit from the gondola. you dig your snowboard into the ground like a shovel. With your heel edge. Dig it in at an angle from the surface, then move your snowboard left and right to level it out. What this does is it allows you to put your last binding on from a standing position because”you made a table,” so your tail doesn’t have to sit on snow when clipping your bindings in. There is a reverse version for step black diamonds. Instead of digging into the snow with your heel edge, you can do it with a toe edge. Hope that helps your experience next time… enjoy the euro-snow!

Love the video, I've been watching since your main content was Steep. Some advice from a snowboarder, 1. when turning you want to point your shoulders in the direction you are going and shift the weight in your feet, so if you are doing a toe edge turn you turn your shoulders that way and put more weight into the toes of your front foot and then as the board starts to turn, into the toes of your back foot to stop you from catching an edge. The same applies for heel edge turns but you put your weight into your heels instead of the toes. 2. Its a natural reaction for people who are new to snowboarding to start leaning more on their back foot, especially when you start to pick up speed. This is a problem since it makes it easier to fall backwards and lose balance when hitting bumps as well as having less control over your turns as you start the turn by shifting the weight in your front foot first. Because of this it is a good idea to make a very conscious effort to keeping your weight more over your front foot until it starts to feel natural. Hoping we get to see another snowboarding video, much love from Ontario.
@TeaFour26 күн бұрын
Hey man decent advice, I'm a CASI certified instructor in Ont, 1. Turning your shoulders is definitely a component of a good turn but turning should be all throughout body, so you turn you shoulders to turn your hips to turn you knees. And for your advice to apply pressure unequally is definitely false, even weight distribution, but you are definitely correct about putting weight over toes vs heels. 2. Weight should be even, CASI's recommendations is "A centered and mobile body position." For some good demos search up CASI level 1 riding standards.
@TeaFour25 күн бұрын
Hey man just checked the riding standards for CASI and I may have been mistaken, for beginner turns it can be a good idea to transfer weight to the lead leg to help initiate the turns.

Really nice for a first try! What a bizarre timing since I'm going to kinda do the opposite very soon. I do around 70 sessions per season at Ruka (deep carving) so it was fun to see you try snowboarding there. Pretty damn brave going straight for the Vuosseli run! The funny thing is that I'm just about to try the reverse of what you did and I just bought a pair of skis, installed the bindings myself and this weekend I'll be hitting the slopes with the skis first time after over 30 years. 😆 I skied as a kid and switched to snowboarding in the nineties. Too bad I won't be doing the skiing test at Ruka since I'm going to Pyhä next. Have fun in Finland! I love this time of year with the magical light and empty runs. Too bad the snow situation is so grim though.

Great stuff and loving the energy. Kudos for trying that snowboard. That snowboard allows you to do the one thing that has never been achieved on skis: do a grab that doesnt look cringy :D But this great ability does come with a price, as you learned. And while I admire the sitting in the middle of run behaviour, never do your bindings that way. Claim your space and be a nuisance, but sitting down to strap in is top of the line kook behaviour (unless in some actually nasty backcountry drop in). The reason why you stomp your board to the hill is to drive your edge into the snow and make a level base so you don't have to sit down. I'm currently in Levi and wondering if I should go rent a pair of skis to feel how having a decent amount of effective edge feels again. It's been a... while. I was stuck on skis at the age of three, made the switch to a board at around 12 or 13.. But that's was close to three decades ago.
