I LIKE that Pokemon is trying to make more monsters stand out in terms of gameplay but I DON'T like that they insist on making us play through the whole game with Singles then making you play Doubles on official formats and then designing these new monsters to be good SPECIFICALLY for Doubles. No other monster collector does this. They pick a battle system and stick to it. As a result you get all these bulky offensive and hyper offensive monsters that rip through Singles easily.

I played in a tournament when the game first came out, and it was really funny because these bans were happening while the tournament was still going on. For example Flutter Mane and Houndstone were banned minutes before I was gonna play in the first round, but we agreed to allow them anyway cause we prepared teams with them in mind (I ran Houndstone and Jolly Dragapult on my sand team to revenge kill FM). I still have these teams archived because its interesting how different the meta was with those Pokémon around, as well as certain mons not being as popular as they are now and mons that aren’t used anymore

Honestly, what's going on with competitive pokemon is very similar to what happened with Smash years ago. Both were never designed to be super competitive, but thanks to a passionate community, a competitive scene was formed. Obviously, this is a nice little pocket of fans to cater to, which they did (at least in pokemons case) through hosting official circuits, but the intended audience is still the average non competitive consumer. And between Gen 6 and Gen 9 we saw what happens when they started making pokemon with competitive pokemon in mind........enter the absolute unhinged power creep, back then you had maybe a couple of pokemon that were meta defining or a specific game mechanism that def favors some pokemon over others like Megas or Z-moves, it wasnt nearly as crazy as it got with Gen 9 where some mons have abilities or moves that are whole win conditions (kleaver who gets a STAB move that sets up spikes, or the hero fish). At least in the case of smash, fighting games naturally cater to some level of being competitive. It used to be that you had average mons with good competitive viability or bad mons with zero competitive viability. Now we realize that they probably aren't the best when it comes to competitive, either through the sheer number of pokemons that create a balancing nightmare or creating literal busted pokemons. But it all makes sense when you realize Pokemon is the only competitive monster tamer game, so it's not like you got many options for substitutes.

I personally don't have an opinion on quick banning but I feel the fancy "Ruins" abilities sort of clouded the fact that they are literal stat buffs against 95% of Pokemon lol.

Never too sure why Tera water was the META for Annihalpe. I Always used Fire Tera. Same resistance to overheat, resistances to fairy is huge because of your fighting type, as well as the same steel resistance as as water. As you can’t be burned if you go Tera Fire. Tera fire FTW

I personally liked tera fairy more, the only good offensive steel/poison type in OU is Gholdengo which is weak to rage fist and can be chipped or removed earlier in the game

Fire tera was nice, but the SR weakness does hurt since annihilape does appreciate being able to switch out and come back in keeping the rage fist boosts. Water/Fairy/Fire were all common sets.

I get that there isn't all the time in the round for research and that this is mostly a general overview of currently banned mons in SV OU, but I feel like this doesn't accurately portray the discussions that occurred at the time. For example, Annilapate is strong mon yes, but look at pokeaim's and blunder's videos at the time and the impression you get is that Annilapate is a powerful but manageable threat (I'm not saying they are right or wrong, just that it's different from what the video suggests). In fact, A main point that finch brings up regarding Annilapate's QUICK BAN (even the extent of the council's quick ban happiness was being discussed at the time) was how it stifled balanced teams and worked with terastalllization (that suspect just finished and quick ban already). Personally, I think the discussion was more about a difference in priorities (are there enough decent tools to handle ape vs the importance of meta-game diversity) than it is about answering the question "is Annilapate op?" I get that these things won't fit in bite-size videos, but it would have been nice to at least mention that there were dynamic discussions occurring instead of framing things as inevitabilities that everyone agreed on.

Shed Tail itself isn't an issue because Orthworm has it and isn't nearly as oppressive as Cyclizar was. Dude had Regenerator, Knock Off, U Turn, Rapid Spin, AND could hit decently hard if you got complacent The same goes for Rage Fist, where Primeape has it and isn't even close to being an issue, but Last Respects is on one Pokémon only (at the moment) and Smogon prefers to avoid complex bans, so it's better to just ban the Pokémon instead. Once Basculegion is released I'm sure Last Respects will be banned and Houndstone released

@@andyblanton6570 it's not just banning the move, it's banning the move on the specific Pokémon, which leads to a whole litany of potential issues. Technically any Pokémon can be unrestricted if you ban all of its good moves, but if the move isn't problematic on other Pokémon then there's a good chance that the Pokémon itself just enables the abuse. That's the case with Cyclizar and Annihilape, and like I said Houndstone will probably be free once Basculegion drops and Last Respects has a distribution that isn't literally just one Pokémon

I think for the people saying Gholdengo to be banned that while I can understand the disdain for not having the ability to status outside of Mold Breaker and Toedscruel, I think what people fail to realize wih Gholdengo that while it is an amazing Pokémon it is only amazing currently because of the limited dex. Once home releases and we have more reliable answers to it like Landorus, it’s going to start seeing less usage (not dropping to UU but it won’t have nearly 50% usage). Landorus-T is naturally faster than it by a large margin and it has the benefit of walking non-Ice Spinner Tusk Sets. There’s also the Hisuians coming back to abuse it’s meager speed tier. Base 84 Speed is what’s holding it back and while yes it can run scarf there’s already a drop off on Scarf sets for how abusable they are. Gholdengo suffers a lot from that speed tier so imo having Pokémon that can outspeed it reliably and consistently check it no matter the set is important in team building. Tusk is a consistent check solely cause it’s one of the few to get Knock Off and outspeed it, which brings up another point. Gholdengo is absolutely terrified of Knock Off, if you’re faster and you threaten Knock Off then you automatically have an advantage. Iron Treads is just as amazing as Tusk with dealing with Gholdengo as it’s naturally faster and resists Make it Rain. Even if it’s inferior to Tusk offensively it’s still great utility wise and can help with matchups for other Pokémon that Tusk struggles with like Fairy Types. I think people are so reliant on raw power and damage with HO and Bulky Offense that they don’t look to see the utility offered by some Pokémon to deal with the current Meta Threats.

Though only lack is not good coverage or boosting move a lower Spd than flutter and bundle less power . Still it is very powerfull and banworthy in my opinion

Without a doubt Dragonite is next. Behind a free sub via Orthworm's shed tail and it's multiscale allowing for multiple boosts, it becomes a discussing task to deal with. With Tera Normal, it's already strong EQ gains stab while losing all its major weaknesses in exchange for a weakness to fighting. The only true stop to Dragonite is defensive Great Tusk but then Dragonite just needs to add Hurricane to its set and wipe it out.

Dragonite isnt hard to deal with if you play around it. Orthworm can only shed tail so many times, and whirlwind can force it out easily. Its forced to run boots because of rocks, so no funny items

When you have to run an otherwise unviable mon whose sole purpose is to counter a singular mon, its broken. Theres a difference between accounting for threats and automatically losing on preview if you didnt have a specific mon. Dont forget beads of ruin, scarf and specs, STAB, tera, and sun. This thing could OHKO blissey under the right conditions *with a special attack*. If that doesn't explain enough to you, I don't know what will.

And ive used it myself in 3v3 unless its choice scarfed it just gets ohkoed by faster threats. Its not broken neither is palafin fluttermane or iron bundle or annihilape. Ive had extensive experience fighting all of them. Sure i lose to some people using those pokemon but its because i misplayed, its no big deal if you lose.

Nintendo has an official format for the game. smogon rule sets don’t matter when playing competitively. If you want to play any format that smogon has formulated you are restricted to Pokémon showdown. The community also doesn’t show any support for smogon formats. I can go to my local card shop and have a weekly tournament for vgc.

First of all, I appreciate the effort and that everyone likes and loves different game. However, the year is 2023 and I still don't understand why people care about Smogon? Singles isn't easy the official VGC style. Singles are 3vs3, not PVE 6vs6. As for the bans, I'm sorry to play 'Devil's Advocate' but players are dumb about certain counters. So, for a dummy like me, can you explain why they ban pokemon with a counter that people just don't like to use? And here's the way to counter those threats. Palafin banned? Gastrodon counters its strongest STAB moves and plenty other pokemon tank it. Gastrodon also tanks Iron Bundle with tera Fire and more. Houndstone gets rekt by weather teams and Kingambit destroys it, for example. If Kingambit is last, it's pretty much equipped with a Choice Band if you have Supreme Overlord. That + the ACTUAL ITEM + Tera Dark and Sucker Punch 1hk0 most of the meta. Oh no... Flutter Mane and Bundle are OP for being fast. A sash user with sucker punch has a field day. Annihilape hits hard, but is slow. Even if you 'tank' a hit from a faster pokemon, 2nd will kill it. Annihilape vs Annihilape for some cheap damage and as long he is kept low, it is doable. Espathra has Speed Boost but there are plenty of tanks to handle it in singles... like Skeledirge, Mimikyu with Disguise up, Infiltrator Dragapult with Phantom Force + Sucker Punch and sash. Besides, Mimikyu can be a nice trick room user or even sweeper, thanks to the disguise + S-Dance tactic. Shed Tail users suffer if reduced beyond hald. Most fast pokemon can do a decent amount of job to counter the bycicle. Funny you didn't mentioned Ting-Lu. It is THE BEST Tank in Generation 9 and is NOT BANNED? Ting-Lu destroys both Chien-Pao and Chi-Yu, or you never realized those pokemon CAN NOT 1hk0 a Ting-Lu? Why is Ting-Lu not banned IF NOT to counter Chien-Pao and Chi-Yu.

They ban Pokemon based on how "Centrlizing" it is towards team building. For example, Chi-Yu made you have to have a Ting Lu or a tera water Annhilape for example on your team to counter it or otherwise its basically gg for you. These bans are so we can allow more easy teambuilding with no Pokemon feeling like they must be on your team to win. Houndstone for example has the move last respects and was impossible to stop once it has sand and its prority's are dealt with. While yes, there are obviously Pokemon that can counter one another, the essense of teambuilding it take into account of those counter with your own counters and these "banned" Pokemon are Pokemon that even exceeded those teambuilding aspects more so than others.

Oh god this is such an uneducated mess. Allow me to digest this one terrible bite at a time. There is a counter to every pokemon, and every strategy. Unfortunately, there are a LOT of mons and an equal amount of strategies. When you are forced to run a specific mon that does nothing else but counter against a single mon or 2, it is overcentralizing and broken. If you dont run that specific mon, you lose on team preview. "Gastrodon beats Iron Bundle and Palafin with tera fire" First of all, there is the opportunity cost of having to terastalize to not get obliterated with freeze dry. What happens if *they* tera ground and knock your socks off? Palafin's bulk up and drain punch set also cleans up gastrodon, stops recover, and sets up on it to destroy the rest of your team. So not only does Gastrodon struggle to deal with them in these circumstances, but Gastrodon is practically passive or setup fodder for every single other mon in the tier. Its not good. If you dont know how stored power works, it ignores unaware. So not even *that* is getting you anywhere against Espathra. Espathra also has the opportunity to flip its weaknesses into resistances with tera fairy, which you can do NOTHING about. The infamous speed boost + stored power combo has been a theoretical fear for GENERATIONS, and they were finally stupid enough to add it on top of one of the most centralizing gimmicks of all time. Shed tail and regenerator was ridiculous, and if you think Ting-Lu was a counter to Chi and Chien, dont you think its usage would be a little higher?
